cnbuff410··on Show HN: HN Notifications – Get an email when a HN story matches your criteria
I wrote something similar but is a menu bar app for Mac, so more real time, but more annoying.

https://github.com/cnbuff410/hn-notifier

It only focuses on new post without any threshold and keyword matching, mainly because of my specific requirement.

cnbuff410··on Ask HN: Natural language processing (NLP) toolkits for Go and Rust?
For Go:

cnbuff410··on Why is Golang popular in China?
How can you be so sure about it. First of all, Go is not generating more interest than Obj-C[1]. Secondly, most searches regarding language still happens inside the GFW(like on Baidu). So ya, trend search certainly doesn't tell you the whole story about total usage, yet it still tells you part of the story, which is the "trend" IMO.

cnbuff410··on Why is Golang popular in China?
Sure, and you can draw the conclusion that Perl is declining and Go is rising.

cnbuff410··on Ask HN: Are you using Dart? Where's my community at?

cnbuff410··on Go 1.4 is released
For Go, I don't think what you need is a compelling reason from someone else. One compelling reason to one is not necessarily compelling to others.

Instead, since Go is a very simple language with very easy learning curve, I encourage you to spend a weekend to check it out. Pick a side project and do it in Go, then you will know if it's the language for you.

I would even argue that the joy of writing Go would be magnified by working as a team and the joy of reading Go would be demonstrated by exploring any Go project from any team. But I would not go that far for a Go novice who just want to check it out

cnbuff410··on What do you guys think about Dartlang?
I use it and love it. I mainly use it for frontend stuff to replace most of the javascript. Writing code in Dart is easy, fun and PREDICTABLE.

It also force me to write frontend code in a more engineered way because that's how it works, which benefits myself down the road for the millions of times I revisit and update the code.

My only problem for Dart is that its doc is not complete and dart:js is lacking comprehensive example for complex library.

But all in all I enjoy Dart a lot for my frontend development.

cnbuff410··on Google apps better than Apple apps?
Android + google apps is definitely a very nice combination and I believe that's one of the biggest reason why there are a lot of people stick to Android years ago when it was not nearly as nice.

The nice thing about this combination is that, you can enjoy everything within browser eco system, therefore you are not locked by any sort of OS system. Be it Ubuntu or MacOS or ChromeOS or whatever, OS doesn't matter.

cnbuff410··on Brad Fitzpatrick on the future of Go
> there is not a single reasonably sized Go project

I'm not sure if I misunderstood your statement, but Go has Docker, CoreOS and numerous other projects which have more than 20 developers working on the same codebase.

cnbuff410··on Official Go support
It's both interesting and suprising that how steady this exponential growth curve is. The increasing speed of Go usage on stripe doesn't slow down as time goes by.

Of course without knowing the base we don't know how big usage it actually is, also we don't know if it's counting one-per-client or one-per-request. Still nice to see that nonetheless.

cnbuff410··on Motorola Moto 360 Teardown
Here's Motorola's statement:

The typical battery capacity for Moto 360 is 320 mAh and the minimum is 300 mAh. In the mobile industry, sometimes both the minimum and typical capacity is listed on the battery, with the typical capacity quoted as the official battery size. Both figures are included on the batteries of our Moto X, Moto E and Moto G devices. In the case of smaller devices, we aren’t always able to list both figures. For Moto 360 we only had room for one figure and choose to list the minimal capacity of the battery. We see how this can be confusing and we will look into ways to add the typical capacity as well in the future.

cnbuff410··on A Watch Guy's Thoughts on the Apple Watch After Seeing It in the Metal
I'm sure the author is very knowledgeable on the watch industry and by no means I'm challenging his taste and feel of fashion.

I'm just curious that when he made claim of "The Apple Watch is by far the best smartwatch", what is this claim based on? Did he try all the other high end smart watch like Moto 360 or G watch R? If not, is it really fair to make a strong public claim like this?

cnbuff410··on Meet the Apple Watch
I think there are two things Apple did wrong here

1. They have customized size and band, while not the shape. I for one love round shape and hate the square shape, and I believe I'm not the only one with this preference.

2. They emphasized too much on the interaction with watch. IMO, watch is supposed to notify you new things, have you glance over it and do some quick responding. That's it. User should not use watch in the same way they use phone.

In Apple watch's demo, they have too much interaction showing there and the information on one screen is sometimes crowded. That's not a good sign.

I do like the new interaction pattern they introduced there though. Quite innovative IMO.

cnbuff410··on Conjecture Regarding Larger iPhone Displays
I'm not saying big screen is for everyone. I'm simply pointing out how stubborn and blind they were.

They were not defending small screen. They were basically saying big screen is useless, stupid, and bad fit for your hand if you are normal human.

Oh well.

cnbuff410··on Conjecture Regarding Larger iPhone Displays
Okay, I'm not trying to be a dick here. But everytime when I see the rumor about the screen size of iPhone 6, it always remind me how Gruber and Jim Dalrymple, two of the biggest Apple fans on the internet, mock the screen size of Samsung Note before.

Note became instantly popular in Asia area and I always thought there are big market for big phones. I even argued with Jim on his G+ saying there are someone who genuinely likes it, they could not believe.

Yes, of course, the 4 inches iPhone is perfect. THERE IS NO OTHER SIZE COULD FIT BETTER IN HUMAN"S HAND. Right? Right?

How times change.

cnbuff410··on D for the Win
What makes Go's syntax that unintuitive to you?

Go's syntax is really easy to most programmers who is willing to learn. It's probably just 1 days work to pick it up. It's very similar to Swift's syntax in many aspects, and I don't hear anyone complaining Swift's syntax is not intuitive and just for the sake of being different.

Perhaps instead of just claiming you can give us some examples on "syntax is all over the place" part?

cnbuff410··on Google Said to Plan Separating Photo Service From Google+
Oh yes please. It makes no sense to bind a photo product with a social platform. I mean you can make them talk to each other, for sure, but for now it's more like photo won't function normally without G+.

For example, it's quite silly to have Google+ as the first item in navigation view on the Photo apps on Android. Whenever I want to see my photo, I want the photo features, not social features. I will only want to touch the Google+ when I want to share it, but it's not the thing I want to do all the times.

cnbuff410··on Google Trends: Golang is popular in China
I'm not sure if "not being able to understand Chinese therefore all their communication looks like secret" is the reason for me to get downvotes. FWIW, I'm native Chinese speaker living in US and have been closely following the Go's usage in both places
cnbuff410··on Google Trends: Golang is popular in China
I don't see how Scala is "killing it" in China[1]. China is even not in top 10 in terms of contribution for Scala's search traffic.

cnbuff410··on Google Trends: Golang is popular in China
I'm not sure Go is more popular in China than in US. Based on what I heard, The companies using Go is definitely more in US, and it's the same case for online discussion and offline meetups.

I don't quite get why the search traffic for "Golang" is so much bigger in China, unless there are some companies there use Go in their production in large scale secretly

cnbuff410··on Go: 90% perfect, 100% of the time
> Well, that's what I do. But Go seems to get a disproportionate amount of coverage on HN, particularly compared with what people I've met in real life are using. (at least here in London. Maybe it's much more popular in SV?)

There are quite a lot middle/small scale companies using Go in US. I can give you a long list if you want, but you can probably just search it by yourself.

I can not speak for Brad, but my impression on his comparison is that he picks up languages which are more used in the field Go is targeting at, not those which are only perfect fit in theory
