cmurf··on The National Guard Deployment in LA Is a Threat to Democracy
It’s bait. People who protest should protest at city hall or someplace other than where Trump is putting the bait.

Trump wants images of confrontation. He wants escalation. Mark Esper, Trump’s SECDEF in his 1st term, said Trump ordered protesters to be shot. Trump wants to kill Americans.

His memorandum yesterday didn’t mention LA or California. He’s asserting control of the guard everywhere. He said yesterday he would deploy troops everywhere.

The delusional conspiracy theory Trump won the 2020 election, in order to justify January 6 violence and then pardoning those criminals as his first act as POTUS redux.

Trump sent a mob to assassinate the vice-president of the United States when he (Mike Pence) refused Trump’s order to overturn that election.

Trump’s longest serving chief of staff said Trump is, A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law.

The bigotry of low expectations is thinking people are too stupid to know this, rather than understanding 1/3 are anti-American illiberal shitbirds.

Just because they failed to get it once before doesn’t mean they didn’t try and keep on trying.

Shorten lifespan.

Cut all things that promote or enable public health.

In neo-feudalism, only lords and perhaps some of their most favored serfs, deserve private for profit health care, and the barrier to entry is cost. Why be wealthy if you can’t buy things other people can’t?

There’s always a surplus of peasants in this model.

People need to write their representatives. Volume of responses is what Congresscritters respond to.

Party doesn't matter. Ds need to inform their R Congresscritters every bit as much as any other combination.

For what it's worth, Republican constituents overwhelmingly voted for Trump in the R primary. Any number of candidates would have provided boilerplate Republican policies, but that wasn't what they wanted.

What Trump is doing is what these voters want.

And there's no limit. It's become an illiberal pro-authoritarian movement. It's in-progress.

Pick something you care about and defend it. It can't be everything all at once at all times, no one can do that.

cmurf··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
I think do nothing except vote is a trap. It shows how weak our political immune system is that people think it's only about elections.

Call or write your Congresscritter. Concisely express your concerns. Seriously short. Someone listens/reads the message, ticks a box that summarizes your concern, tallies the checked boxes. It isn't personalized like some might wish but your opinion is counted.

If the actual response exceeds the expected, then some feel good pandering might occur. But in large numbers of complaints, it can move the needle.

If everyone did it, there'd be more responsive government than merely voting. Of course not everyone does it. But in aggregate your call/email has an effect when you do it regularly and tell others they should.

What if even 1/10th of the complaints on social media went to Congresscritters? They'd respond differently.

Join a peaceful assembly. Join two.

If we do nothing that is permission. What comes next is election shenanigans because why not? What stops that if the people have already shown they don't care?

cmurf··on How Will We Know When We Have Lost Our Democracy?
The founders understood power. Their solution to monarchy was polyarchy, defined by a written constitution. A contract. Law.

A republic is an empire of laws, not of men.

And the oath of office, 5 USC 3331, is to support and defend the Constitution. Not a person.

cmurf··on How Will We Know When We Have Lost Our Democracy?
John Adams said the Constitution was intended for a moral people. The text isn't self enforcing, it takes people who will support and defend it.

It may be we're out of virtue and don't deserve the Constitution anymore.

cmurf··on Secret Deals, Foreign Investments: The Rise of Trump’s Crypto Firm
No. That isn't enough. The only way to avoid another Trump is to not elect one.

The solution liberals recoil against for some reason, is disassociation. We should have threatened our Trumper friends and family with permanent disassociation before the 2024 election.

Most would still persist, unpersuaded. They're likely lost for our lifetime. But perhaps enough would have taken the social cue of ridicule and ostracizing as serious enough to not vote for a psychopath. The farther back, the more effective it would have been.

Instead, we keep thinking they can be persuaded with reason, despite all evidence they've abandoned rationality.

We can't legislate the outcome you want. What you want comes from virtue. And America is out of virtue. People voted for a rapist, a felon, and vile insurrectionist.

America may not deserve Constitutional order, and therefore we are losing it.

cmurf··on Secret Deals, Foreign Investments: The Rise of Trump’s Crypto Firm
Is that really the lesson?

John Adams told us the Constitution is intended for a moral (or virtuous) people.

The point is the law isn't self enforcing. People have to insist upon Constitutional order, not because of (blind) faith in it, but because the alternative is tyranny. Not anarchy.

Does this country deserve Constitutional order? The People abandoned it by electing someone virulently and openly opposed to it.

The regulation you seek is utterly meaningless in an autocracy. Or even in a unitary executive theory of Constitutional order.

But in the specific case of Trump, among the most untrustworthy liars America has produced, what does Constitutional duty mean to him? What does it mean that he took the oath of office? He said the words but no serious person believes he took an oath.

People still have no idea what we've done. And what is yet to come.

The POTUS is a psycho. And the replacements aren't good people either.

100 days down, 1369 to go. It's going to get much worse.

This is what happens with the authoritarian faction, present in all societies, wins an election. The people who stand for the Constitutional order didn't do enough. Whether they weren't sufficiently positive persuasive or negatively persuasive, here we are with President Psycho in office.

cmurf··on ICE Agents Realize They Arrested Wrong Teen, Say 'Take Him Anyway'
Did you read the 4th circuit opinion?

The Government may not rely on its own failure to circumvent its own ruling that Abrego Garcia could not be removed to El Salvador. More importantly, the Government cannot be permitted to ignore the Fifth Amendment, deny due process of law, and remove anyone it wants, simply because it claims the victims of its lawlessness are members of a gang. Nor can the Government be permitted to disclaim any ability to return those it has wrongfully removed by citing their physical presence in a foreign jurisdiction.

https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/ab...

>That's why all they could say was 'facilitate', and why they had to slap the lower judge's wrist.

That's an incomprehensible interpretation of what the Supreme Court actually wrote:

The order properly requires the Government to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador and to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to El Salvador. The intended scope of the term “effectuate” in the District Court’s order is, however, unclear, and may exceed the District Court’s authority.

What distinguishes a concentration camp from a prison (in the modern sense) is that it functions outside of a judicial system. The prisoners are not indicted or convicted of any crime by judicial process.
