cmclaughlin··on Internet Hay Exchange
> These are classified ads for cow food.

I was talking to a friend about this recently… he was stressing out about rain on his hay piles. He said cows will eat just about anything - even hay that’s been rained on. But other animals, such as horses, are more picky and need specialized feed.

Just FYI as I found that interesting

cmclaughlin··on Why the American shoe disappeared and is hard to bring back (2019)
> "There's really very little commercial reason for why you would make footwear in the U.S. today,"

Wolverine Shoe company dumped toxic waste from leather tanning operations into the ground water everywhere around their headquarters in Rockford, MI. Not surprisingly, there have been extremely high rates of cancer and various illnesses in the community.

It’s hard for me to read a quote about them making shoes anywhere else knowing what they’ve done in the US.

cmclaughlin··on Amazon postpones return to office until January 2022
> I'd like to get back into the office where I don't hear my dogs bark at every bird that lands in the back yard

I'm enjoying working from home along with the sights and sounds, except for leaf blowers. I can look out my window and watch squirrels play. Luckily I only have one neighbor with a dog and it doesn't bark much. But this comment makes me wonder why you bother having a dog if you don't even like the sounds they make.

cmclaughlin··on Solar is dirt-cheap and about to get even more powerful
Would you please explain how the Powerwalls negate the rate plans?

Do you mean during peak ok hours you’ll operate off battery power?

I’ve read something about PGE charging customers for using solar - arguing that solar customer aren’t paying into the system for keeping up the grid. Are you referring to that scenario and do the batteries help with that in any way?

cmclaughlin··on Terraform 1.0
Support for multiple stacks in a single file was added to cdktf recently. I’ve been managing dozens of production stacks in a single repo for a while now and highly recommended it.

cmclaughlin··on “They introduce kernel bugs on purpose”
What a waste of talent... these kids know how to program, but instead of working on useful projects they’re wasting everyone’s time. It’s really troubling that any professor would have proposed or OK’d this.
cmclaughlin··on Pulumi 3.0
Indeed... technically you don't have to use the cdktf CLI. For instance, I typically run "python main.py" to synthesize from Python to Terraform.

From an end-user perspective, once you have your cdktf environment setup you don't really ever have to deal with node.js at all.

I've never had a reason to dig into this very deep, but my understanding is the cdktf Python libraries use JSII Python libraries which interact with the main JSII implementation which runs under node.js. That's where the conversion from Python to HCL compatible JSON happens. Or in the case of the main AWS CDK, from your favorite programming language to CloudFormation.

More info on JSII here:

https://aws.github.io/jsii/overview/runtime-architecture/

cmclaughlin··on Pulumi 3.0
> Any thoughts on Pulumi vs Terraform?

If you're just getting started with Terraform be sure to check out CDK for Terraform. It allows you to drive Terraform from a variety of high-level programming languages instead of it's DSL.

cmclaughlin··on Pulumi 3.0
> In addition to what others have said, it is important to point out that the CDK is AWS specific.

As mentioned in other comments here, CDK for Terraform is another option and it's not AWS specific - it should work with any Terraform provider and there are heaps available.

cmclaughlin··on Pulumi 3.0
> Do folks have opinions on how Pulumi compares to Terraform CDK?

I last tried Pulumi around the 2.0 release and it flat-out didn't work for me. After working through a few bugs with their tech sales I gave up on it. I'm guessing their TypeScript support is better than their Python - for me it just wasn't ready for production.

On the other hand I've been using Terraform CDK in production since the early alpha releases. Had to work around a couple of bugs here and there, but no blockers at all. It's been a game changer for my team and we're really enjoying it!

cmclaughlin··on The Story of the SolarWinds Hack
The article vaguely describes the build system being compromised. Have any details been published to indicate what build systems they were running and what the exploits were there?
cmclaughlin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
CloudFormation is really slow and lags behind in supporting all AWS features.

Terraform is super fast, has great docs and vast coverage for managing just about any type of cloud resource.

cmclaughlin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
My first project was trying to deploy a Redshift cluster. It flat out didn’t work. Did 2-3 calls with their tech sales before giving up on it. And then cdktf came out shortly after that.
cmclaughlin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
> Can you inspect inputs from terraform resource attributes or data sources in the procedural evaluation?

No... the high level programming language really just serves as a bridge or translation layer to a Terraform compatible JSON file. Those sorts of evaluations don’t happen to the actually plan/apply. However, you may find it useful to make direct API calls to your cloud provider in cdktf stacks. For instance, I mostly use data lookups but if I want to perform string operations on that sort of data I would use boto3 instead.

cmclaughlin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
I tried Pulumi with Python and kept running into show stopper bugs.
cmclaughlin··on Terraform 0.15 General Availability
On a related note, CDK for Terraform allows DevOps practitioners to use a variety of programming languages instead of HCL. I've really enjoyed modeling my AWS environments with Python using Terraform only as the engine.

cmclaughlin··on Htmx 1.0.0 Release
I really, really, really enjoyed working with intercooler.js on a previous project... I understand there’s no immediate need to upgrade, but what new features does this provide for new projects?

By the way, thanks!

cmclaughlin··on AWS hearts multi-cloud? It's gonna happen
I ran into bugs with Pulumi. But I’ve really been enjoying CDK for Terraform - check it out:

https://github.com/hashicorp/terraform-cdk

For those that don’t follow this space very closely - this allows yiu to model infrastructure in your favorite programming language, such as Python.

> I don't understand whats the value added on top of normal > CDK. There I can also define Aws infrastructure with > Typescript and I don't have to pay a subscription.

That was my first impression too - I've been using cdktf and love it.

But this tool isn't for you and me - it's for front-end developers that don't want to fuss with devops. Seems like a great idea with that in mind.

I just made zucchini fritters couple nights ago and I would bet most would like them. Shredded them with potatoes and squeezed most of the water out. Mixed with eggs, garbanzo bean flour and salt. "Aurora is expensive and makes exporting data a pain. I have no intention of using it until it’s easy to set up external replication so I can fail over to other providers (or leave). No external replication, no business, especially at that price point. Aurora was quite a disappointment."

Aurora MySQL supports raw access to the binlogs. Aurora Postres supports Activity Streams and Logical Replication. Both are well support by DMS, which can even support replicating and converting between different types of databases - it's designed to support moving into AWS, but nothing's stopping you to use it to replicate in the other direction.

RDS is worth every penny, in my opinion. Of all the technology I've used in my career, it's one of the most impressive.

I'm all for backing up claims, but drive through Pac Heights and Cow Hollow at night - you won't see many lights on in those mansions. Drive by during the day and all you see is construction workers and gardeners tending to the properties there. It's pretty obvious people don't live there more than a couple months a year. These are the ultra rich with property in the most expensive cities all over the world.
cmclaughlin··on Ask HN: How do you manage logs for your backend services?
AWS CloudWatch Logs has come a long way. The new Insights UI is great. No need for us to manage ELK for logs anymore.
