cmauniada··on Don't End the Week with Nothing (2014)
I have mixed feelings about the book. On one had, I can see the value in all of the laws but on the other hand it seems that the author tries to force laws around past events and just make the laws "fit" the narrative.

It got a little boring after like 20 or something, so I just stopped reading it.

cmauniada··on React Cosmos – Build UIs at Scale
That's internet for you, in general its easier to criticize then to build so take it as a good sign that you are actually making something.
cmauniada··on Ask HN: Should managers participate in team building games (fun plays)?
I see from your post history that you might be a new manager, so first of all congrats!

Now, onto your question, yes absolutely, that's essentially how team-building works.

cmauniada··on Facebook's Hypocrisy on Apple's New iOS 14 Privacy Feature
I feel that the general public either doesn't care enough or doesn't know what they are signing up for when they use facebook.

If facebook made it mandatory tomorrow that you must opt-in or you won't be able to use their services, almost everyone will opt-in. Its simple as that.

cmauniada··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
Same here.

What are the specs on your machine? I realized that yabai ran like crap on my older macbook retina 15" but on my current macbook 16" it works great. Same amount of ram 16gb but a better graphics chip.

cmauniada··on I3: Improved Tiling Window Manager
If anyone’s looking to replicate this on OSX, check out yabai[0].

I have also been using skhrdc (same maintainer I believe) for key bindings and it’s an absolute blast.

cmauniada··on Sony acquires anime streaming service Crunchyroll
If I had to guess, I would say because they would rather spend more cash on creating new content than acquiring niche content distribution that’s already out there.

On top of that, the target audience has a big overlap.

People who use crunchyroll most likely have Netflix accounts already. So it probably wouldn’t benefit them significantly.

cmauniada··on DIY Smart Doorbell with a Raspberry Pi
I mean, slap on a nice website, logo, some nice packaging and branding and boom you’ve got a product that you can sell.

Ahem nest.

cmauniada··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
Thanks for the correction.
cmauniada··on U.S. Feds Seized Nearly $1B in Bitcoin from Wallet Linked to Silk Road
Yes, but they didn't hack into the wallet. They basically found the person who was in-charge of the wallet and forced their hand (read: civil forfeiture) in order to gain access to the bitcoin.
cmauniada··on Launch HN: Sunsama (YC W19) – Daily Planner for Busy People
This should be somewhere on the front page.
cmauniada··on Fuck You Sunday
how? What does your schedule look like?
cmauniada··on Car Paint Colors Have Gotten More Boring over the Years
Wow, very insightful! If you get a chance I would love to read the marketing theory.

(I will try to find it myself in the am too).

cmauniada··on Car Paint Colors Have Gotten More Boring over the Years
As others have mentioned, geography also plays a huge part. When I used to export vehicles to Afghanistan, I noticed that they didn't like dark colors at all. I was specially told by my broker to stay away from sending black cars or cars with darker shades i.e blue, because demand for them was very low.

The highest demand was for white cars, reason being is that the areas are quite dusty. So if you have a white car, it won't look very dirty with dust on it. In contrast if you have a black car, even the slightest dust will make it appear dirty. Its harder to keep a blacker color clean.

Also, for some reason green toyotas (sienna, tercel) always sold like hot pancakes in Cameroon. To this day I still don't know why.

cmauniada··on Loss of smell could be a 'highly reliable indicator' of Covid-19, research says
Just gave my covid test - when results come back I can ask to be referred to a specialist.

Oh and I am in Canada :)

cmauniada··on Loss of smell could be a 'highly reliable indicator' of Covid-19, research says
I lost my sense of smell about a month ago, I didn't have any symptoms. None. None of my family members were sick or got sick - neither did I come into contact with anyone who was sick...

There are 2 theories, either I got the flu and my immune system just took care of it and it went away, leaving me with this condition OR that I was trying to bench 2 plates (45 lb * 4) and did something that might have damaged the olfactory bulb as I did feel a rush of blood enter the middle of my head.

The problem with trying to pinpoint this is that you don't realize it right away, it takes a couple of days to realize that, hey maybe I should have been smelling something now?

I can only smell very intense scents - normal smell is gone... feels really weird as I am only in my mid 20's.

cmauniada··on ByteDance plans TikTok IPO to win U.S. deal as deadline looms
This is a point most people seem to forget. In simpler terms it's retaliation - granted they could have done this a long time a go? maybe... but right now there are other interests at stake as well.
cmauniada··on The Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity (2017)
Is it weird that I was doing that as I read your comment?
cmauniada··on Justice Dept. plans to file antitrust charges against Google in coming weeks
Interesting. So its just a different admin that wants to get a point across. Right before elections too - simply political imo.
cmauniada··on Justice Dept. plans to file antitrust charges against Google in coming weeks
It would be interesting to see how much amazon and apple spend vs. how much google spends on lobbying - might answer your q.

cmauniada··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
As an iOS developer I learned react! Then I learned about gastbyJS and now I’m working on making a simple website for a startup/business.

By far the hardest thing for me to grasp has been CSS, it’s just so weird and feels so un natural at some points. There are so many ways to do the same thing, which feels a little overwhelming. Also in awe of grid layouts, which I just learned about so at least that’s a good thing!

cmauniada··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
Fair enough, I know the original article was about what you just mentioned. Still doesn't give them a pass to how they carry out their business though.
cmauniada··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
They have a habit of copying open source software and re-branding it as their own.

Here is an article.

cmauniada··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
AWS isn't that far off from following in the same path. Look at what they did with Elastic Search.
cmauniada··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
I should have worded my question better, I was just surprised why you would leave out arguably the top 3 companies and go with something like Oracle. (Maybe I am too young and that's where my animosity for Oracle comes from, but I feel like they are way behind the curve in terms of their cloud).
cmauniada··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
Why? Is it because of cost? Perhaps nepotism? I don' see a reason why Amazon or Azure would be passed over in favour of Oracle. Why wasn't GCP a contender either? Something seems fishy... someone from Zoom care to chime in?

Maybe they are afraid that Amazon or Microsoft with their tradition of copying competition would pose a threat? Even then, Microsoft is already competing using Microsoft Teams and if Amazon wanted to it wouldn't be hard for them at all to come up with a product.

cmauniada··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
I understand where you are coming from but it’s not always about trying to get people to buy things right away, advertising can be used to create brand awareness as well. A positive brand image is worth a lot more than just making a couple bucks here and there off if impulsive shoppers.

If you have another solution apart from google ads, I’m all ears. Seriously.
