clydethefrog··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
The Dutch government let the USA store their nuclear weapons in the 60s in Vonkel already. We have long lost our sovereignty.

clydethefrog··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Also, the METR report that was one big AI analysis itself - quote from the research:

>Our subjective impressions are likely colored by analysis agents’ biases. Throughout this report, we describe a number of anecdotes of agent behavior that were compiled and summarized by analysis agents, where we were not able to read the transcript deeply enough to manually verify what occurred. We found that GPT-5.6 Sol would often uncritically adopt the perspective of the agent in the transcript it was reviewing

clydethefrog··on Fake US thinktank set up and funded by Israel sought to game AI for propaganda
This is not a related source at all, the article and discussion you linked is about a cluster of ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia. The discussion of this thread is about a US thinktank set up and funded by Israel to game AI for propaganda. This is getting meta - are you trying to game the discussion about this AI gaming thinktank?
clydethefrog··on The Gargantuan Lie That Is Collapsing the Climate
You might want to research such things as "feedback loops", the effects a high CO2 had in the past million year with extinction events and the almost impossible task of reversing the released CO2 and more. Climate scientists have studied these models for years now, real life is not a CIV game.
clydethefrog··on NHS apologises and admits Palantir have access to identifiable patient data
LRB had a great article about Palantir and the NHS in their latest issue. [1] What I mostly enjoyed reading is the insight that their actual software is quite "rubbish", something I have seen people mention in discussions here, especially in the early years of Palantir before it became more notorious and well-known. I do believe the "evil company" is part of their marketing to cover up that they are your usual proprietary software with a shitty UI and expensive contract that is being sold to clueless upper management.

clydethefrog··on Spanish government 'quietly bans use of Palantir' in critical state systems
Meanwhile the Dutch news just has a headline that NATO fully embraced Palantir’s Maven Smart System, so I wonder how true this ban is.
clydethefrog··on Israel targeted Gaza children resulting in genocide, UN inquiry says
The European Press Prize this year went to "What the wounds are telling us", an investigation into the wounds of Palestinian dead children. I recommend you read it.

clydethefrog··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
They are provided for free because a quick scroll through the playlist shows they are soft propaganda tools for Australia's geopolitical interests. These video essays "explaining" geopolitics are the contemp version of Buggs Bunny and Donald Duck making fun of Japan and Germany.
clydethefrog··on Claude Fable 5
Almost all Musk related negative news gets [flagged] and never hits the the front page, so there is still a silent base on the other "team" apparently.
clydethefrog··on Dopamine Fracking
This was described in a 2016 essay in the Verge, coining it "airspace". It has been going on so long that indeed it has become the standard now, see this recent analysis, claiming that airbnb estate agents should invest in "authentic" interior.

clydethefrog··on Dopamine Fracking
There was a major campaign the last decade from many pro-capital and libertarian thinkers to label Adorno and other philosophers as the root cause of many people grievances. Remember Peterson et all all warning about "Cultural marxism" and "postmodernism"?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_Marxism_conspiracy_th...

I try not be against new terms like "enshittification" or "dopamine fracking" for this reason, the tech people at the levers that might be convinced to change course seem to be more open to substack and blogpost concepts (see SSC / rationalist popularity for all this new terminology that just describes old continental philosophical concepts) instead of having to read old European thinkers that use too much Marxist terminology.

Edit: case in point, literally users here are now linking to SSC essays explaining critical theory lol

clydethefrog··on Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
There was another research in Austria into phone-free living among 46,000 young people shows that three weeks without a smartphone leads to better sleep and less depression. The participants reported increased psychological well-being and a decrease in problematic internet use, even after they started using the phones again. Many young people found new activities such as reading or playing outside to fill the time. https://science.orf.at/stories/3235664
clydethefrog··on Malaysia enforces ban on social media accounts for children younger than 16
In our liberatarian paradise where everything is ads and poison because of the ruthless aim of maximizing profit, the biggest enemy is heavy regulation from to some other body that is not a for-profit entity, be it a moral and spiritual guidance of a church or lifestyle or a strong government apparatus that is true to it's aim to improve the lives of it's citizens.

clydethefrog··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
They could stage a "Operation Spiderweb" inspired attack [0], but this seems highly unlikely with the current powerful surveillance state of the USA. I once read a wild theory that some Mexican cartels might be able to, since they have access to military hardware too nowadays.

clydethefrog··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence
Just last night:

"It’s worth pointing out that Hezbollah has managed to get rockets right down to the south of Israel today – and that is unprecedented. Never before has Hezbollah managed to get rockets so far south into Israel."

clydethefrog··on Iran war energy shock sparks global push to reduce fossil fuel dependence
Strange how there are so many progressive radical groups and somehow the anti-nuclear activists are the only ones that manage to change the energy agenda in favour of the very powerful lobby of the fossil fuels. The animal activists never changed the subsidies to animal agriculture, the activists for international causes like Palestine haven't managed much either.

clydethefrog··on Halt and Catch Fire: TV’s best drama you’ve probably never heard of (2021)
I remember the writers of SV actually somehow had to tone down the ridiculousness of the SV setting. See this quote from The New Yorker [0]:

>“His [Teller, working for Google] message was, ‘We don’t do stupid things here. We do things that actually are going to change the world, whether you choose to make fun of that or not.’

>Teller ended the meeting by standing up in a huff, but his attempt at a dramatic exit was marred by the fact that he was wearing Rollerblades. He wobbled to the door in silence. “Then there was this awkward moment of him fumbling with his I.D. badge, trying to get the door to open,” Kemper said. “It felt like it lasted an hour. We were all trying not to laugh. Even while it was happening, I knew we were all thinking the same thing: Can we use this?” In the end, the joke was deemed “too hacky to use on the show.”

clydethefrog··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
The European Commission bases its investigation on the rules laid down in the Digital Services Act (DSA). This European legislation, introduced in 2022, imposes strict requirements on companies offering digital services in Europe.

In addition to TikTok, the social media company Meta, Facebook's parent company, is also under the investigation.

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_24_...

Quoting: >The Commission is concerned that the systems of both Facebook and Instagram, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioural addictions in children, as well as create so-called 'rabbit-hole effects'. In addition, the Commission is also concerned about age-assurance and verification methods put in place by Meta.

And before someone mentions the other? X - the everything app formally known as Twitter - is also under the Commission's scrutiny. It was fined approximately 120 million euro at the end of last year.
