Source on that? IE spread from the Dnieper River area to Western Europe and Western China in a rather short amount of time. Clearly there was a lot of migration from the Urheimat.
TBF the north/south rail coverage discrepancy already existed a hundred years ago when you could get from the Loop to Evanston with one transfer at Uptown Station. Though perhaps the same mentality applied but towards the Irish.
Cool that your daughter is willing to play retro games (I assume), I tried to get my teenage nephews to play FF7 and as soon as they saw the blocky graphics they noped the f out. Sigh.
Good to know I'm not the only one who can't figure out UIs these days. Mobile apps have all these icons that give me absolutely no idea what action will be performed. I miss the days of being able to hover and get an English description. (I guess this is where I say "get offa my lawn!")
If you finished a CS degree with a 3.6, you definitely have the aptitude. What makes you so sure you had to work harder than your classmates to get similar results? They could have been burning the midnight oil a lot more than you think.
Although I don't necessarily agree with Stallman on a lot of things (I'm typing this on Windows 10) I have mad respect for the guy. The world needs advocates like him to counter the bad actors in the corporate world.
Creoles are fascinating. If we can assume that modern language came about with modern humans some 50,000 years ago, I wonder how many modern languages are creoles of extinct languages?
I completely feel you on b. I always have a set of various folders opened and even with shortcuts it's a pain in the ass to reopen them all (because what's open depends on what I'm doing).
Renren had already lost to QQ Space before Wechat existed. Which I find hilarious, the Myspace clone where you can annoy viewers with auto-playing music and atrocious Javascript beat out the Facebook clone.
I'm not surprised. Using livestream apps (or in Vine's case short videos) I've noticed that broadcasters are incredibly addicted for a month or so, and then they disappear forever.
Mayan is strictly CVC and CV? I always assumed that Chinese remained logographic because of the phonology's quick shift to CVC within a thousand years or so of the script's invention. Reading a lot of Baxter and Sagart's papers and monographs I've come to remember many of the Old Chinese reconstructions, but it would have been a nightmare for a farmer to learn.
Just keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like you're pretty motivated, so learning a few Romance languages simultaneously will be a much better use of your time. Highly recommend reading Wikipedia articles to give perspective about how the languages developed from Latin.
I actually had a great experience setting my mom up with Linux (past tense because I bought her a Chromebit when the hardware died). The pain point comes with users who have enough computer literacy to want to install things. My mom is happy as long as she can click to open Chrome, and I'm happy because I don't have to clean up .exe malware hell.
Trolling is just as prevalent on the Chinese internet. Of course, there are topics that won't make it past the filters, but there is a lot of hate speech towards China's opponents like Japan and the US, so I am quite surprised that XiaoIce hasn't learned to say "kill Japanese devils and attack the US imperialists!"
My exposure to the Erlang world is limited to having read the first few chapters of Programming Elixir. Is interop trivial? Can you easily use Erlang, Elixir, and LFE in the same project?
I seem to recall ICQ's popularity already being in free-fall by 2000. My guess would be that as former AOL users switched to local ISPs, they would download the familiar AIM instead of ICQ. Most of my ICQ friends were internet friends; everyone at school used AIM.
Actually, it's a good analogy because Mandarin's difficulty is also overblown. It's hard, yes, but I have no trouble being understood by the Chinese, and any Westerner living in China who makes the effort inevitably comes to that point as well.
