cltsang··on Cloudflare Network Performance Issues
This is just my personal guess, but it's likely China flexing again after the protest escalation yesterday in Hong Kong. A few weeks ago Telegram was attacked by China [0], and Hong Kong protesters used Telegram to communicate.

This time when CloudFlare was down, the most popular local forum among protesters, lihkg.com, was brought down as well.

cltsang··on Why Hong Kong Is Still Marching
1. The legislative council is controlled by the CCP for a number of reasons.

2. Last time the people tried to do organize a vote, China performed the largest DDoS attack at the time, trying to bring down the vote system backend.

3. Also most Hong Kong people don't want independence. Most just want CCP to keep hands off.

cltsang··on Trump's Next Trade War Target: Chinese Students at Elite Schools
If you are implying Donald Trump is my president, that is incorrect. It's dangerous to make assumptions when you are not keeping a level head.

If requesting social network identity is not being more conscious, what is it? It is not a blanket ban. For all we know, social network identity is just more information for making a more informed decision on the visa application.

Did I claim "all just Chinese propaganda"? I was taught in mathematical induction lessons that necessary condition does not equal sufficient condition.

I don't disagree with the rest of your statements. But I think even after disregarding an open southern border, the US is still relatively open.

How did you get that impression? From what the article says America is only getting more conscious about foreigners from China, not foreigners in general. They are quite different.

This is hardly a surprising move considering the recent realization that the Chinese government has been pushing propaganda against American values like freedom, democracy, and basic human rights, on American soil. One notable example is confucius institutes [0].

cltsang··on Ask HN: Why is the US the center of the tech industry?
Freedom and democracy are vital to open and honest discussion, which in turn drives innovation. Sense of safety and security on all fronts let people concentrate on ideas and execution, rather than things.

Reading this official Xamarin Forms document https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/xamarin/cross-platform/desk... It's really hard to tell how the 2 offerings from Microsoft differs. It looks like Xamarin Forms is fairly mature, and supports Mac and Windows. Does anyone have production experience on both? When sould one choose one over another?

Every revolution starts small. Just because it's a baby step doesn't mean we shouldn't take it to move forward.
cltsang··on It’s Game Time: Oculus Quest and Rift S Now Available
With the current trend that cities are becoming mega cities, and the price of physical space in the central business area of those mega cities are going up, I think there will be demand to shift white collar workspace to the virtual world. 400 USD is a low enough price compared to rent plus furniture, maintenance, etc.. On the software side there already exist Immersed VR and Virtual Desktop. If they could increase the refresh rate such that the average people don't get motion sickness wearing it, while keeping this relatively low cost, I think it could disrupt how we work.
cltsang··on So you want your app/website to work in China
This comparison is just like comparing apple to orange to me. When a company blocks you, you could just voice your opinion on another platform. It's an open internet afterall. But if it's the government, the center of all power, that blocks you, you just have no other way. That is the difference of having and not having freedom of speech. If the people are really concerned about Google's and Apple's business with Saudi Government, they have the freedom to go for the third option. It may seem difficult but it's totally possible and viable. But under an authoritarian regime like China, even the freedom choice is an illusion.
cltsang··on Kenya Government mandates DNA-linked national ID, without data protection law
I don't doubt that money is one of the major driving motives of almost everything we do.

My point is I fail to see how your comment, regardless of its truthfullness, adds value to the discussion.

If there already exist murderers, is it okay for you to become a murderer?

What the article suggests is without proper checks and balances in-place, the new system could easily be used against Kenya people. And I totally agree. But to stop it, we need to find out the root cause of the problem.

cltsang··on Kenya Government mandates DNA-linked national ID, without data protection law
Kenya is part of China's belt and road initiative. I wonder if this is aided by China to lay the groundwork to push the country to be authoritarian. Just like how ZTE helps Venezuela tighten the control of her citizens. https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/venezuel...
cltsang··on Microsoft confirms Bing is down in China
This is mostly true. However, there are also signs of change as they are starting to enforce the digital border. https://www.scmp.com/tech/policy/article/2180960/chinese-vpn...
cltsang··on China Bans Bitcoin Executives from Leaving Country, Miners “Preparing for Worst”
I think by outsourcing to China or entering the Chinese market, those companies are making a conscious decision to accept the risk, which is that what is perfectly legal and fine today can suddenly be illegal and hated tomorrow. Also, you can't expect any fair fight in China. Quanxi and lobbying the established politicians and tycoons is just part of any business.
cltsang··on SimplCommerce: Simple, cross-platform, modularized ecommerce system on .NET Core
I've been trying to port an existing .NET 4.6 ASP.NET project to .NET Core. So far there are 2 major problems:

1. entity framework core code first does not support table per type inheritance, which makes database migration necessary

2. some libraries do not support .NET Core yet
