clsec··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
I bought a Sceptre a few years ago but it died pretty quickly (dead pixel strip on the screen). But the replacement 44" Insignia (Best Buy) that I replaced it with has been an awesome tv.

So yes, you can just walk into the Electronics Store (Best Buy) and purchase a dumb TV.

clsec··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
You didn't word it like that though. And I'd argue that for people with MDD, and without those comorbidities you listed, depression is a huge problem.
clsec··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
>>Right now I have bigger problems than just depression.

Just depression?! You might want to grab a little empathy before writing off something that has been a major problem in a large chunk of the populations lives. In fact, "just depression" has caused me to try to take my life multiple times. I can hardly see a "bigger problem" out there..

clsec··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I said it elsewhere, but it took me a month of micro dosing down to get off my 40mg/day citalopram habit, which I had been on for 15 years. And even on my own super slowed down schedule I still experienced massive side effects. Good luck to you if you ever decide to wean yourself off of it & always remember to keep backup citalopram in case you can't get your script refilled right away.
clsec··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
A psychiatrist definitely does not always know these things. Mine told me there should be no Citalopram withdrawals and that I should taper by cutting my dose in half over a 2 week period.

They were absolutely wrong as I have serious withdrawal reactions to Citalopram. It took me a month of micro-dosing down to safely get off a drug I was on for 15 yrs. And even then I was having constant brain & body zaps, that feel like short circuiting, for a full month after I dosed down to nothing. 6 mos later & I still can't sleep more than 6 hrs.

How did I know this was going to happen? Going cold turkey when my script ran out. I even told my psych about it numerous times but they just brushed it off.

clsec··on Recycle – Floppydisks
I used to use them, and 8" disks, daily with some of the first CAD/CAM engraving machines I used at work in the early 90's.

Worked fine for me in a temporary container in FF on Ubuntu. I have uBO, Privacy Badger & Disconnect extensions enabled.
clsec··on AI fuels more than half of cybercrime in Africa as scams surge – Interpol
"Is there any way to help the elderly navigate this shift?"

As it stands right now, no. Luckily, at least for now, I'm tech savvy enough to navigate it. But the 100, mostly immigrant, elderly residents of my building will not be so lucky.

Two months ago I learned, during a water outage on a Saturday morning, that my building's new assistant manager was an AI bot from EliseAI. What was an actual emergency, it thought, was something that could be dealt with the following week. It told me that management would respond on Monday, which is completely unacceptable during an emergency water outage. I had no water for 3 days & on Monday the actual human manager waffled on why it wasn't immediately fixed & thought it was cute (he giggled & got excited) that I discovered that the assistant manager was now an AI bot.

And just yesterday, I got an unsolicited text from an unknown number that looks exactly like a phishing scam attempt, except that it was sent by the assistant manager AI bot. The text said that I had $130 in unpaid rent & had links to remedy it. WHAT?!! First, it's illegal in CA to give a tenant notice that way. Second, it looked exactly like a phishing scam attempt. I obviously didn't click the links, but I did parse them & found that they belonged to EliseAI. This also happened a month after the human manager gave out a notice about back rent that I had already asked about. He told me I had $0.00 debt on the books. So why the AI bot phishing attempt?

I perused EliseAI's privacy policy and there is no way that I will be knowingly feeding any PII into it.

I haven't tracked down the manager yet to give him a piece of my mind. But in what world is this kind of activity OK? How are non-tech savvy folks going to survive these things? Especially the large non-English speaking elderly population in my building. As far as I can see (I live in SF & am surrounded by it), we're doomed.

Thanks for pointing that out! It turns out that the latest update to qBittorrent started binding to all available adapters. I just set it to only use my VPN's adapter and all seems to be fine now. Thanks again!

clsec··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
I know I'm late on this, but..

"That means residents and visitors to San Francisco will be able to pay a fare to ride in a driverless taxi, ushering in new automated competition to cab and ridehail drivers." [1]

btw - are they going to check ID's??

clsec··on 2023 Paid VPN Relationship and Corporate VPN Ownership Map
I'm surprised that no one has said anything about the fact that this is put out by a VPN company!

I also could not find their name on the map. It doesn't mean that it's not there, I just couldn't find them. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The only thing I find a VPN useful for is torrenting w/o your ISP knowing. In my case, I use Surfshark for torrenting so that Comcast can't send me any of those pesky letters.

clsec··on Chronic Pain: Finding Relief with the Benefits of Cannabis
While I differ from others responding, in the fact that I do find pain relief from cannabis, this is not the place to get your information from [1].

Why is that? It's a fully public taxi service that will probably be heavily marketed in Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39.
clsec··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
No, the California Public Utilities Commission just approved them to take fares. Unfortunately San Franciscans have had very little, if anything, to say in any of this.
clsec··on Living Wage Calculator
A yearly food cost of $4,686 for a single adult w/o children in San Francisco County? Not quite, more like $6,000-7,200 per year or $500-$600/mo.
clsec··on Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company
I can't even count the number of times Taylor Swift and her concert tour have been on the news in the past two weeks.
clsec··on Banks hit with millions in fines for using Signal and WhatsApp
Yep. I've been WF free since the mid-late 90's. They've been at this as long as I've been using a bank (1980).

Credit Unions FTW!

clsec··on Blocked by Cloudflare
It happens to me all the time. And it has been going on for years, but it's getting noticeably worse over time. One way or another you have to pay to use the web, be it costing you loss of access because of your strict privacy settings or paying by giving away your privacy. There's no win here..
clsec··on Write your passwords down (2010)
My laptop, phone, ISP, banking, medical & KeePass passwords are written on paper in a fireproof safe.. I also keep offline backups of my KeePass database.
clsec··on Remembering the Slip: the Manhattan street that birthed a generation of artists
San Francisco was like that until the first tech boom in the late 90's. After that most of the artists moved to the East Bay and Portland.
clsec··on Play deprivation is a major cause of the teen mental health crisis
Seeing lots of comments about over scheduling children's free time.

I took music lessons, did Cub Scouts Weeblos & Boy Scouts, played little league, played Pop Warner & high school football and ran track. All after school activities.

As for freedom.. I took SF MUNI, BART, Ferries and Golden Gate Transit starting at 7 year old. Any free time I had was spent playing with friends. And I had to be home by the time the street lights came on.

So it is possible to have a lot of after school activities and plenty of time to play with friends and explore the world.

clsec··on Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools
I took SF MUNI to & from school in second grade. I took GG Transit to the city from 9-14 y/o and then MUNI when I got there. I also took the ferries and BART fairly regularly as well. All by myself.
clsec··on Why did it take psychedelics so long to become popular?
Yeah, if the article posted had been accurate the headline would have been: "Why did it take psychedelics, other than LSD, so long to become popular?"

Here's the outline of the study* from UoM: https://news.umich.edu/hallucinogen-use-other-than-lsd-on-th...

clsec··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)

You are absolutely correct.
clsec··on The internet didn’t kill counterculture, it's just not on Instagram (2021)
Agreed up until DND & frisbee golf. It's actually off/airplane mode and what happens in counterculture stays off the internet. Instead frisbee-golf pics will be posted to fool the masses.
clsec··on What if California's dams fail?
I'm not sure but if you look at maps of both floods it seems that weather pattern in 1964 was a lot further north than the 1862 flood. Also, the wiki article for 1862 says that that was an El Nino year.
