clscott··on Leveraging SIMD: Splitting CSV Files at 3Gb/S
Perl's best known library Terxt::CSV has both a pure-perl and a C implementation.

Here is the C version

clscott··on Ask HN: How much are leaf blowers contributing to climate change?
It's a drop in the bucket vs container ships and cars.

The containership situation can only have gotten worse since this article was published https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2009/apr/09/shipping...

clscott··on Google keeps records of everything you buy, even if you delete the email receipt
Worse, the stores are feeding them this info in easy to digest packets:

clscott··on Firefox 91
I use the Window Titler extension to give my windows names and the Tab Mover extension to move tabs between windows.

This way I name windows after a project and as needed I'll move a tab there if I happen to open it in the wrong window.

As a tab hoarder this has really enhanced my organization and ability to find things again.

clscott··on Should Perl die gracefully?
Silent failure based on running your code in newer version of perl5 is very unlikely to happen.

Perl prioritizes backwards compatibilty above all else so much so that it hides new language features behind either a version declaration `use v5.30;` or a feature declaration `use feature 'say'`

Code written on 5.8 (2002) will run perfectly fine on perl 5.34 (2021). The language and standard library have had a few deprecations but most of them were problematic or unused features and went through a long deprecation cycle where perl would emit warnings about the upcoming deprecation.

That's the core language though, there is nothing to be said about the consistency of CPAN modules just as with any other language's collection of third party libraries. Or with vendor packaging.

clscott··on Chrome testing RSS-powered ‘Follow’ button
Honestly adding both isn't necessary. Just use Atom because RSS is an ill defined hodgepodge.

I work for a service that creates "RSS" feeds as a side effect of what we do and they've all be Atom for 10+ years with no issues.

Please let the RSS format die.

clscott··on NSFW Server Designation
Reddit clients on iOS already have to filter out NSFW content unless the viewer is logged in and has some settings applied to their account.

This is an Apple policy not a Reddit policy

Edit: added the url I meant to use in the first place

clscott··on I am stepping down from Perl Steering Council and Core
Did you add quotes to harassment because you are involved that conversation?

It would be proper ettiquette for you to state such, especially since you created an account only to comment on this topic

clscott··on The Future of Perl
This is the current proposal (it's a living document). For example it was just decided to drop the CONSTRUCT phaser and likely the common keyword.

https://github.com/Ovid/Cor/wiki/Corinna-Overview

This is an implementation of some of the ideas that is proving out to be faster (execution wise) than hash based objects:

clscott··on Google Scans Your Gmail for Invoices and Receipts to Track What You Buy Online
Google has specific markup to make it easier for them to collect your data (and provide some UI niceties for GMail users).

https://developers.google.com/gmail/markup/reference

Not just any email sender is allowed to use them though.

clscott··on Tell HN: A case of negative SEO I caught on my service and how I dealt with it
It's an interesting story, I won'der if you could turn the automation trick around on them.

Would you be able to make them do the same negative SEOing but to their own site?

Fill their site with unrelated garbage and internal links with undesirable anchor text.

* unbock their IP * create content that links back to their site with the undesirable keywords * only show this content to them and not regular visitors * don't let them grab much / any legitimate content

clscott··on SpaceRyde, a Canadian microsat launcher, completes field trial of rocket carrier
This is very cool, I had no idea something like this was right in my back yard.

It's good to seeing the old Boeing facilities being put to good use!

clscott··on Wikimedia is moving to Gitlab
No, robots.txt is for well behaving bots like bing bot and google bot, not bots that will spam your forums (and Git repo apparently).
clscott··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
Thank you for the pointer to the way to turn it off but damn Google for even having to have it in the first place.
clscott··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
Here is the worst possible case scenario that is really happening with Chrome:

If I want to use a Google Property with Chrome (just tested with Google Search Console) I MUST be "signed into" Chrome with the same Google Account as I want use to access the service.

I am not "signed into" Chrome with a google account and I log into that service using the login process IN the web page I become automatically "signed into" Chrome.

Chrome just peeks throught the veil and I am now logged into my browser. Talk about overstepping boundaries.

So, I don't want to have my browser sessions associated to my google account so I "Sign Out" of the browser. BOOM! Logged out of the service as well.

This is a very sad day for the state of a free and open internet.

clscott··on Ask HN: Can someone suggest an open source lightweight alternative to Chrome?
You can very easily and inexpensively upgrade this laptop to 16GB of RAM. I highly recommend you do this, it makes a world of difference.

If you don't already have an SSD in this device I recommend you swap that out also.

I would like to echo the recommendation for Firefox + uBlock Origin - you will see big improvements in perceived performance.

(typing this on my 2011 MacBook Pro in FF)

clscott··on Ask HN: How do you push config to microservices
You could consider pulling those changes. Each repo should contain just enough config to know how / where to fetch its config + whatever is unique to this repo.

You don't share any details about how you manage configs currently but during your build process you can pull/import/load common configuration from a shared respository whether that's a git repo or etcd cluster or whatever fits your environment.

clscott··on Perl Master Plan
To be clear, this was NOT written by Larry Wall. It was written by Will "the Chill" Braswell, author of a perl fork called `RPerl.`

He is not speaking for the general Perl community

clscott··on Fancy Zones, a tiling window manager
They are, but it's not exactly the same. I want to customize my current Desktop with multiple windows arranged "just so."

Mulitple desktops with windows nicely arranged on each is even better.

clscott··on Fancy Zones, a tiling window manager
This looks neat. This is a kind of window manager I have wanted for quite a while on OSX
clscott··on Email made me miserable, so I decided to build my own email app from scratch
This is an interesting read, when I saw a few of the comments here ask "how hard can it be?" I was reminded of this presentation by Rik Signes at YAPC::NA (2008)

clscott··on My Great Grandmother’s Industrially Processed Food
The veggies were all frozen, except for the stewed tomatoes and pasta sauce (veggies only, meat added at meal preparation time).

The canning overall wasn't the primary source for the nutrition but it was a part of the overall strategy of prepare and store the food, outside of the "food industry".

And trust me, I remember the hard work clearly but I may be looking at the past wistfully wondering how to get my kids to eat more vegetables.

clscott··on My Great Grandmother’s Industrially Processed Food
I'm only in my early fourties and I was quite late into my teens before I realized that almost no-one else did this like my family.

We grew up on a farm, dirt-poor and did it out of necessity but it was all delicious food: pickles, relishes, canned fruit, jams, jellies, home-made tomoto sauce.

We also laid in bushels of produce into cold storage - potatoes, squash, apples and cabbages.

Do I need to mention what we froze?

Blanched peas, green and yellow beans, corn (cut off the cob) and home grown lamb, pigs, beef and chicken (both kinds).

I am far more well off then my parents were at the same age, but my kids are not nearly as well fed (nutritionally) as I was at the same ages.

Now that we are in prime harvesting season for a lot of this stuff, I might have to rethink what we're eating and preserve some simple, homemade foods.

clscott··on Ask HN: What is the argument against a custom integration vs. API?
They should consider switching, but the criteria needs to be outlined and weighted by the actual customer.

It all comes down to migration and maintenance costs and appetite for risk.

The primary question is will I get what I need on budget in the shortest time frame with option ABC or option XYZ?

The secondary questions are:

* If I need to extend the integration in 6 months with this solution what will it cost and how long will it take and do I have flexibility in who can do the work? * Can I upgrade to the next major version of ABC or XYZ and reasonably expect that my custom integration will keep working.

clscott··on Ask HN: What is the argument against a custom integration vs. API?
In order to start a meaningful discussion it would help if you defined your terms and present an example scenario.
clscott··on The best diff tool for OS X is IntelliJ?
I've always been pretty happy with Diffmerge

https://sourcegear.com/diffmerge/webhelp/sec__inst__mac.html

Instructions for commanline use are pretty easy to find as well as setting it up as the default diff toll for git and svn
