cloudwalking··on Google blimps will carry wireless signal across Africa
Seems to me users would have access to the same Internet as you or me. They will be able to read about these issues, just the same as we can.

cloudwalking··on Tesla Smashes Earnings And Revenue Expectations
You have to drive to the gas station and then drive home.
cloudwalking··on Tesla Smashes Earnings And Revenue Expectations
You never need to visit a gas station. That's 15 minutes per week that I'd save myself.
cloudwalking··on Tesla Smashes Earnings And Revenue Expectations
This is the first of many profitable quarters for Tesla. The Model S is a better car in every single regard (except for range), than any other car on the market. It is safer, faster, roomier, more fun to drive, has more storage, quieter, more convenient, and less polluting.

Electric vehicles will displace combustion vehicles. Everything that makes a car, the electric car does better.

Right now the electric vehicle market is small, but soon (one decade?) it will eclipse the combustion market. Tesla is ahead of ALL other vehicle manufacturers, and that lead will translate into significant market share. As the electric vehicle market grows, so will Tesla's value.

cloudwalking··on How to use a Reddit-clone to boost company culture
This is a good startup idea. Services for improving company culture.

Important to make the data exportable and have a solid privacy policy.

cloudwalking··on Path texts my entire phonebook at 6 AM
Let's not jump to conclusions too quickly. This was probably (hopefully) a bug.

Not if the point is to donate the profit.
cloudwalking··on Google Glass API Documentation
Glass is an entirely new kind of device; to have good ideas I think we need to wear it and experience the world through it. The API is fairly constrained, but so is the device (eg always in the field of view). And strict constraints, when enforced for good reason, often lead to interesting products (eg Twitter).
cloudwalking··on Google Glass API Documentation
Parent's link is how to get media onto the Glass device. Here is how you get media from the Glass to your server: https://developers.google.com/glass/v1/reference/timeline/at...
cloudwalking··on Tesla Model S Sales Exceed Target
Everybody is making a big deal about the battery changes, but you're right: the really important part of this announcement is profitability. This is HUGE for Tesla, as it proves their model is successful.
cloudwalking··on Lessons Learned from YouTube’s $300M Hole
Actually they blew $12 billion on Motorola for a hardware manufacturing company (tooling, personnel, supply chain, patents, etc), and $6 billion in cash.
cloudwalking··on Lessons Learned from YouTube’s $300M Hole
Actually, YouTube is fairly independent within Google. And Google is more of a software company with an internal ad agency.
cloudwalking··on How to stop Time Warner Cable sucking at Youtube
I suspect Google makes more money from showing you ads than they would save on servers/bandwidth/etc by being skimpy.
cloudwalking··on How to stop Time Warner Cable sucking at Youtube
Net neutrality is a myth :(
cloudwalking··on 500 Startups Open for Applications
As the FAQ says, they charge for office space, food, resources, guest speakers, etc.

To a certain extent it helps companies understand the value of their cash. Rent and benefits are costs that (almost) all businesses bear. $50,000 is a lot of money and some founders burn through it too quickly. Mentally, it's a lot different than YC's $15,000.

cloudwalking··on 500 Startups Open for Applications
What specifically is bad about them?
cloudwalking··on 500 Startups Open for Applications
Curious what gives you this opinion? I've had nothing but good experiences with 500 Startups members.
cloudwalking··on Tesla produces 400 model S each week
Most of the car is built by hand. Robots move the vehicle along the production line, perform a lot of the body and frame spot welding, and stamp aluminum panels. Most of the work is done by people.

Right now the car is still evolving--both design and manufacturing is changing (literally) daily. It doesn't make sense to use robots yet.

Source: I toured the factory last week.

cloudwalking··on In California, It’s U.S. vs. State Over Marijuana
While I agree that pot should be legal, I don't think this is a clear-cut issue.

The President is head of the Executive branch. It's his duty to enforce Congress's laws.

Pot is illegal at the federal level (aka Congressional law). It's against the law to possess, sell, etc. So unfortunately the President is legally required to prosecute this.

Now, given that, I am a bit disappointed this is happening. There are plenty of other more important things to prosecute more zealously. Especially given Obama's "bigger fish to fry" comment.

cloudwalking··on A Sad Irony: The Federal Judiciary's PACER Pricing Is Illegal
I agree with this essay, but I want to point one thing out.

  > Any startup could design a system better than this
  > for $10,000. (For a frame of reference, PlainSite,
  > which is roughly as complex as PACER, has cost Think
  > about $1,000 so far.
This is shortsighted. I think hosting a government website is quite complex. They have very strict security requirements and maintenance requirements, with very little economy of scale. $25M does seem a bit high, but I can easily see their costs above $1M.
cloudwalking··on Google Flu Trends
False, they are not related. Google has been predicting flu severity (based on search data) since 2006.
cloudwalking··on Google Flights
I'm confused. In your second paragraph you say the airline page won't let your gf book the flight, but in your third paragraph you blame it on Google.

Sounds to me that the airline webpage has additional (read: useless?) security features that Expedia doesn't have.

cloudwalking··on Google’s Gmail Outage Is a Sign of Things to Come

cloudwalking··on Auto Insurance Comparison Startup Leaky Launches Nationally, Raises $670K
Me too! :(
cloudwalking··on Auto Insurance Comparison Startup Leaky Launches Nationally, Raises $670K
Instead of an insurance comparison service, these guys should start an actual auto insurance company.

Nobody likes insurance companies, so there's certainly a market for an insurance company that people love.

Be ambitious. Build something big. Comparison sites are not a big or ambitious idea. Comparison sites are a feature of bigger platforms. If you're building a platform, call it that. Otherwise, build something bigger.
