clintonb··on Google OAuth is broken (sort of)
Related: More service providers need to stop using email as the primary identifier (as Google’s docs recommend). When I changed my username on Google Apps, I spent a lot of time dealing with issues at Slack, Datadog, GoLinks, and others.
clintonb··on The Long Shadow of Checks
> It would be trivial to implement and make things much more secure…

If it were truly trivial, this would have been implemented long ago. This isn’t a pure engineering problem as much as it’s a “convincing people to do it” problem.

clintonb··on E3 Is Officially Dead
Why would a vendor pay someone else for an online-only expo when they can market directly via ads? Why would a customer pay to participate in an online-only expo when they can see videos for free online?
clintonb··on Show HN: WarpBuild – x86-64 and arm GitHub Action runners for 30% faster builds
We used BuildJet cache for months. It’s possible it was always broken and I only noticed a few days ago. I tried both and neither actually cached data. I even tried forking, and upgrading, the BuildJet variant to no avail.

I spent a solid couple hours trying to fix this before moving to WarpBuild.

clintonb··on Show HN: WarpBuild – x86-64 and arm GitHub Action runners for 30% faster builds
I migrated from BuildJet this week because BuildJet’s caching is broken. Installing cached pnpm dependencies takes about 12s on GitHub and WarpBuild runners. It takes 2m on BuildJet, which is about half the runtime, effectively negating the cost savings of BuildJet over GitHub.

I reported this issue to BuildJet over a week ago and haven’t received any response.

clintonb··on Migrating to OpenTelemetry
Their collector is used to send infrastructure logs to GCP (instead of Datadog).

My guess is this is to save on costs. GCP logging is probably cheaper than Datadog, and infrastructure logs may not be needed as frequently as application logs.

clintonb··on Google pulls Fitbit from almost 30 markets
This is unfortunate, but expected. I used a Fitbit Charge for the past seven-plus years. I built an app, SyncFit, to sync to Apple Health. I switched to Apple Watch last year because it was clear Google had removed features in the latest Fitbit devices to sell more Android Watch devices.
clintonb··on Okta hit by third-party breach, stealing employee data
Yes, context matters. If you discount every company that might be impacted by a third-party breach of employee data, you will be left with no vendors. At some point you have to decide what is acceptable, and have insurance/indemnity for the risks.

I would not discount Okta because of a decision made by HR.

clintonb··on When 80 percent of US generals go to work for arms makers
> And while corruption in the so-called "military-industrial complex" exists, based on my 20 years in uniform, I'm not sure it's worse than in other sectors of the economy.

Your response to the corruption is whataboutism? Should we aim to end corruption regardless of what happens in other sectors?

clintonb··on When 80 percent of US generals go to work for arms makers
> I understand the military-industrial complex, I just don't know if senior military officer job selection is really the thing to get upset over.

Why not? The article provides a few cases of this situation leading to wasteful spending. Limiting this revolving door can eliminate waste.

> Where do you expect US generals to get jobs?

I'd pay them not to work. Same for retired Congress members. You get 100% of your salary for four years to help close the revolving door. That's the deal you make for taking the job. This can be enforced on military officers, but would probably be deemed unconstitutional for Congress.

clintonb··on Skip the API, ship your database
Schema migrations are a solved problem. You make backward-incompatible changes in multiple steps.

clintonb··on When deployments are easy, code becomes simpler
Not quite. I never used flags to hide unfinished code. I left that on a branch. Feature flags are used to rollout production-ready features.

This just seems like taking trunk-based development to an unnecessary extreme.

clintonb··on The Cuts at WVU
Can you share evidence of MIT explicitly prosecuting/bringing charges against students?
clintonb··on The Cuts at WVU
If you're talking about a public company, you're probably referring to an official filing, not an actual press release. I'm not aware of any company issuing press releases saying, "we just paid this dude 8 figures to fire those little people."
clintonb··on The Cuts at WVU
This isn’t shocking. It’s the nature of layoffs. The folks making the cuts aren’t telling the the folks in the communications office, “hey, we are firing that person you’re doing a front page story on.”

Also, the department won’t be dissolved until the end of the academic year.

clintonb··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
Okay…go fix your non-type-related bugs.
clintonb··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
Not sure if you’re trolling. The whole point of this is type safety which requires…types.
clintonb··on tRPC – Build and consume typesafe APIs without schemas or code generation
I prefer building an OpenAPI-compatible API over tRPC to avoid being stuck on Typescript. I don’t fault the creators of tRPC for their decisions. It’s their project, and they don’t have to build interoperability. You can always use gRPC for that.

I would prefer they focus on doing their one thing well than trying to please everyone only to end up pleasing no one.

clintonb··on Squeeze the hell out of the system you have
We use Datadog, which centralizes logs and application traces, allowing us to better pinpoint the exact request/code path making the slow query.
clintonb··on Lego’s new $200 Concorde is a fantastic homage to the supersonic passenger jet
You've clearly never spent much time with children. They care about anything that looks cool, and will easily fall down a Youtube rabbit hole learning about it.

Nearly every toddler I have come across knows about dinosaurs before they have ever set foot in a museum. My kid knows about the Saturn V because of the LEGO set. He loves the Space Shuttle because of a picture I took at the Smithsonian. His mind will be blown if/when we visit Udvar-Hazy.

The kids are going to be alright.

clintonb··on Lego’s new $200 Concorde is a fantastic homage to the supersonic passenger jet
Bingo. The competition are the model planes and cars my dad and uncle used to build with the kits from Michael's/MJ Designs. No need to worry about glue and using tweezers to attach tiny pieces.
clintonb··on Lego’s new $200 Concorde is a fantastic homage to the supersonic passenger jet
LEGO sets are generally priced around $0.10 per piece. I've anecdotally noticed this for the past 10 years.

Data shows prices have probably decreased since you were born (assuming you're over 25 years old): https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/15flwte/is....

clintonb··on Banks hit with millions in fines for using Signal and WhatsApp
Can you switch bills to pull, rather than you push funds? My credit cards, for example pull from my bank. My last “push” payment—bank sends a check—was years ago for a small landlord that didn’t accept digital payments.

I tend to have operating funds in my credit union checking account. This is where most bills are paid from. Savings moves to which never institution has the best rates.

clintonb··on Stopping at 90%
I suspect when quality docs exist, no one _complains_ about them.

Having poorly-written docs can sometimes be as bad as no docs at all.

I just experienced this a few hours ago where I integrated a new library, tested in CI and locally. We see errors in production. Why? A connection configuration that I thought would merge with the defaults _replaced_ the defaults. The docs don’t mention this at all, but it’s pretty crucial for going to production.

clintonb··on Hacker mods an M1 Mac mini to receive power over Ethernet instead of AC
An electrical outlet or USB-C connection is more readily available to me than an Ethernet port with POE. Laptops aren't onboard because the problem of powering laptops is largely solved. Also...not many laptops have Ethernet ports.
clintonb··on Add PayPal to your Stripe integration
Interchange fees differ based on card type and features. Visa Signature, for example, has a higher fee than plain Visa.

clintonb··on Tesla created secret team to suppress thousands of driving range complaints
Navigation data may include altitude changes. Weather data along the route gives you temperature. The driver’s history tells you how likely they are to speed versus drive the speed limit.

Yes. The content in the database remains the same. Developers can continue creating themes and plugins as they normally would.
