clintjhill··on Bored People Quit
Not at all. In fact you should always wait until eye contact. I can't count the number of times I wish I had stared down a boss to make him/her understand that I was drowning in boredom only instead to give a quick smile and nod while continuing to look at my monitor.

It is way to easy to do "manager drive-by" and get absolutely no sense of reality from employees.

This is on both sides to get right. The manager waiting, and the employee taking the time to "look them in the eye".

Abstrations are hard to debug, require a learning curve of 2x the original problem and are rarely complete.

Thank you for that. I've been looking for this concise a statement to make in debates I've had in the past.

Wouldn't it be awesome if one of these days these kinds of hackers actually did something that improved the world?
clintjhill··on Twitter Shifting More Code to JVM, Citing Performance and Encapsulation
In my opinion, the best part of their infrastructure is their willingness to specialize in languages within each stack. It isn't simply "Java everywhere".

"To allow developers to choose the best language for the job, Twitter has invested a lot of effort in writing internal frameworks which encapsulate common concerns."

The single best investment companies can make is to allow developers to choose their specialty, and their language. Otherwise you have a huge overhead of skill set mismatch. And your talent pool can be bigger if you're open to more than one language.

It's a refreshing view.

clintjhill··on Nobody Understands REST or HTTP
Was there something particularly wrong about my comment(s) here? Seems I was down voted on all 3.
clintjhill··on Nobody Understands REST or HTTP
I realize I implied "every table or model", and I would always argue for composition the way you describe it.

But ... there are good reasons to decompose and expose these things in your API. While maybe not for Public consumption but certainly for Private.

It's my opinion that the way REST beats SOAP in the enterprise is that in almost all cases it's much quicker to build decomposed services. And then likewise composition of said services is also much easier.

clintjhill··on Nobody Understands REST or HTTP
You may find that Sling supports you're request here.

But to the extent that they are all "lame database serialization" layers, I'd have to say "well - ya". REST is kind of just that.

I think that what you're really trying to say is that implementations you have found don't do HATEOAS.

clintjhill··on Nobody Understands REST or HTTP
Content Negotiation is a critical part of REST APIs and it's my observation that most simply ignore or default to JSON in all cases. Good REST APIs allow the client to "choose" the mime type. Without this part of REST - you have no "representational".

On that topic, to rely on an 'Accept' header is pretty risky. That presumes the client will always have control over the headers. It is in my opinion always wiser to make the API determine mime type by extension (.html, .xml, .json etc).

clintjhill··on Javascript encryption
Maybe not encrypting text on a page, but possibly to encrypt JSON data to local storage for persistence.

Never do this with absolutely private data, but then again.

clintjhill··on JavaScript is Dead. Long Live JavaScript
Good questions/points.

I would only respond with that in particular, GWT is more than a compiler - it is as much a JRE as anything. So there is more to it. I personally don't see Google doing much public interaction with the development of the GWT compiler. If it's left to Google and its own time then my point remains.

JavaScript on the other hand really doesn't have a single organization leading it's development. Maybe this is an argument to be made about its perceived slow progress. Language design by committee is pretty slow.

More choice is good. Always. But right tool for the job should always win.

clintjhill··on JavaScript is Dead. Long Live JavaScript
"Do you want to maintain a compiler? Does anyone on your team have the skills to do that? That ulcer is going to get pretty big while you prepare to explain to the CEO that you now need to rewrite the UI in JavaScript."

GWT could be really strong. But it's this single maintainer problem that I think prevents it's penetration into the market.

Sadly when I hear people talk about the "strengths" of GWT, debugging and IDE debuggers is what I hear most. If that is the core reason for using GWT it seems shortsighted.

And for me personally I find that using Java (static typed system) to compile down to JavaScript (dynamic function system) is too big a paradigm switch for developers to maintain. Other languages, specifically functional type languages are far better for maintaining language paradigms in compiler situations.

clintjhill··on Why Nerds Succeed‎
Reading this made me think about the punk movement in music. In the beginning it was about being different. Real punk was anything that your parents and friends didn't like. It wasn't about the kind of music you were playing per se, rather about your attitude. Commercially and socially it didn't really take off. You can argue however that the attitude did. Some musicians started to adapt to the attitude in order to take advantage of the small "movement". Rebellion and individuality were what some went after.

Then punk became accepted. Then it even became commercial. Now you can't recognize punk.

Let's not forget though - "I'm just doing my job" absolutely applies here. DPS did not create the laws. They enforce them.

AZ is the state where a guy died doing his job in a photo radar vehicle. He was shot by a guy who felt the man in the vehicle was "the government". These families and homes are now targets.

The morality argument is interesting. However killing and abusing is hyperbole in this context.
clintjhill··on LulzSec releases trove of AZ law enforcement documents
If you lived in AZ you'd know that DPS had very little to do with 1070 and in some cases spoke against it.

Exposing home addresses and wife is uncool. Leave the home and family out of it.

Since when does an apology get down voted?
clintjhill··on [dead]
When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. E.g. "That is an idiotic thing to say; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."

I guess I missed the sarcasm. But being a smug prick sometimes causes me to miss a lot of things.

EDIT: Sincerely - sorry. I get the sarcasm.

clintjhill··on [dead]
Been a while since I've been called a smug prick. Thanks!

I haven't logged in to comment in a while. But this one got me. I for one am now a fan of Zed. While you sit and fuss over his words and his public outbursts, I wonder what open source software you have written that has half the impact that his work has?

My curiosity is why do people really hate Zed? Is it because he says things that hit at the core of their insecurities? Or is it simple jealousy?

I honestly don't think it's because he's wrong.

clintjhill··on [dead]
I agree with your "sensationalist" remark. I don't like it myself, but at that moment that is what I felt. I still feel it a little bit. I guess I'm an underdog champion and I don't like seeing "noobs" ostracized in that way.

I wish I had a solution to provide to the larger discussion - but I'm not that smart.

Well said. That's what I meant to say when I said "this is how communities disintegrate".

Yours is much better.

And this is how communities start to disintegrate.
clintjhill··on Thoughts On The President's Speech Last Night
Read more about No Child Left Behind. Pay attention to what it requires schools to do in order to receive funding. With that information look at what schools are receiving as products (children). When 200 immigrant children get to your school and are ESL, can't pass tests and can't get the support at home because Dad is working 2 jobs and Mom is probably still in Mexico, you quickly realize that you have a serious problem. So then you request more books, more ESL programs and reading curriculum. Then the state and federal agencies say "sorry". You're under-performing. Get kids to pass more tests and you'll get money.

There is no magic means. Simply lack of appreciation for children from other countries compound with a reversed process of quality.

clintjhill··on Funny craigslist "job": create a dating site in 4 hours
I think this is a result of us (developers) making claims of building whole sites in 4 hours. Doesn't surprise me in the least to see people looking for it to be done in real world scenarios. Someone somewhere will answer that ad, get hired to do it, fail miserably and that will perpetuate the myth that software can never be done right.
