clemesha··on Ask HN: Any good examples of learning through games/puzzles, for adults?
A game of connecting different topics on Wikipedia: https://thewikigame.com

The public game room has lots of general random topics, or you can create a private group and make your own challenges with any topics you like.

This is a personal/passion project of mine (and has gotten fairly popular these days). I'm actively working on improving the game, by adding category specific games, different game modes, etc.

clemesha··on Ask HN: Which sites you visit on a regular basis for knowledge and inspiration?
I built an app based on that exact concept: http://thewikigame.com which has been running for many years, and is now quite popular.

The database of the site now contains a large record of millions of game plays of players trying to go from one Wikipedia link to another. See here for some interesting academic research that has been done on the site's dataset: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jSGFRZYrJnlDUBhGbQrO9e-n...

clemesha··on PunchClock: Fun With iBeacons
I'd say Gimbal: https://gimbal.com is a main competitor (see my comment to the parent), but I'd also be interested in hearing about others.
clemesha··on PunchClock: Fun With iBeacons
I'm currently developing an app based on Gimbal: https://gimbal.com (made by Qualcomm).

My experience so far has been pretty good using their SDK (which works on iOS and Android) and their admin web interface, and the Gimbal devices themselves are not that expensive.

I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others using Gimbal..

clemesha··on Django 1.7 RC1
This project is pretty great for using Flask on App Engine: https://github.com/gae-init/gae-init - I've been using it for a while now, and it's been smooth sailing. Also, it's actively maintained and continually improving.
clemesha··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
I make ~$400 per month off of https://itunes.apple.com/app/the-wiki-game-a-wikipedia/id459... (and counterpart: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wiki-game-hd-wikipedia-game/...).

I started 'The Wiki Game' by building this web game: http://thewikigame.com - but all revenue comes from the iOS apps, not the site. Been meaning to potentially monetize the site some day. It gets ~30,000 players per month, with time-on-site ~9mins.

clemesha··on Older versions of IE show a much stronger dropoff in usage over the weekend
I definitely see this trend with a web app (game) of mine. Here's some screenshots of Google Analytics that show exactly this behavior: http://www.clemesha.org/blog/You-must-use-Internet-Explorer-...
clemesha··on Pineapple – Web tutorials, tools, and resources that don't suck
Are the tags user created? One thing I've learned through experience is user created tags are almost universally useless (this is especially true when the service gets popular, and people start adding completely false tags to content, in hopes of garnering more attention).
clemesha··on The Glass Bicycle
If Google can avoid the "Segway curse" of extreme dorkiness, I can only then see Google Glass having a chance at being revolutionary.
clemesha··on Show HN: Most Wikipedia articles lead to the same loop
I have a site: http://TheWikiGame.com that makes a game out of a related idea (finding the connection between Wikipedia articles).

Recently, I've been giving access to the game data to people (like university researchers, etc) to test different theories on path connections made by real people, etc.

The game has now been running for over 3 years, has about 1.19 million players, playing over 1.37 million games, with about 1.22 million won games (successful start/end article connection).

Got a really cool application for all the game data? I'd love to hear: alex@thewikigame.com

clemesha··on John Hunter [matplotlib.sourceforge.net] has died.
I had the pleasure to work with John some a while ago when I was part of the Sage Math project.

Very saddened to hear this news :(

(Just donated. I'd urge anyone who has benefited from John's amazing Matplotlib project to considering donating to help his family).

clemesha··on Chrome now the most popular browser
Yeah, exactly. Check this "visual proof that employees are still required to use Internet Explorer at work" post I did a while back:

http://clemesha.posterous.com/you-must-use-internet-explorer...

clemesha··on Ghost.py - a webkit web client written in python.
Can this be used to suck in streaming Flash video?

There is this streaming camera of the ocean that I check often, but it's Flash and I'd love to check it from my iPhone. Could Ghost.py be used to get the Flash video? (then turn it into images by other means). Thanks.

clemesha··on 500px Terms of Service
Breath of fresh air. I've never seen a ToS like this before.
clemesha··on Parse 1.0 is released
Parse is my most favorite company I've never used (but I'm actively searching for an excuse to become a user). Just watching them build out their impressive platform in mere months has been enough to make me a fan.

One thing that just seems inevitable is that they will be bought, and I wonder if (how?) things will change when they do...

clemesha··on Rails is just an API
This is how I feel about Flask. I've been using it with Backbone.js and they make a great combo: Flask API serving JSON, and the rest of the logic on the client.
clemesha··on Using jQuery, Plugins and UI Controls With Backbone
This is a big issue that I've hit up against as well.

For example, trying to tie a Backbone View (el, events) to a Twitter Bootstrap "Popover"(http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/javascript.html#popovers) doesn't work in the "Backbone way" (we are talking about the same thing, correct?).

clemesha··on Jmpress.js - a jQuery version of impress.js
It will be a shame if this port garners comparable attention to the original impress.js. Looking at both source codes, the meat of the original project is in the smart css3 transformations and related js.

We all know what that powerful 'jQuery' keyword does for a JavaScript project. Maybe I'm being cynical.

clemesha··on Nobody Goes to Facebook Anymore. It’s Too Crowded.
I'm seeing a lot of my real-life, non-geek friends using Instagram like a "Facebook of years ago".

They all have fairly small friend lists comprised of people they actually see in real life. Plus Instagram has that slight "exclusiveness" to it because it is iOS only.

clemesha··on Dropbox: the new file system of the web
Cool! What about S3 bucket support?
clemesha··on Poll: Will you move your domains from GoDaddy today?
I'm still on the fence. (should this be a choice?)

They do have an exceptionally crappy web interface, and their marketing is distasteful. On the other hand, I've called them several times over the last couple years for random support, and my experience with that has always been excellent.

So yeah, still on the fence. And all this Godaddy backlash has just a tad to much witch-trial feel to it. But man their web interface sucks...

clemesha··on JQuery Parse: Dead simple way to save data
This is cool.

What would be even cooler is if Parse made JavaScript a first class citizen (so to speak), and truly supported a JavaScript API.

Am I missing something that might prevent them from doing this? Or is it maybe that this feature is in the works? They sure as hell push out cool new features fast...

clemesha··on [dead]
Another, generic looking, Todo app?? That you mostly can't even use because it is "Coming Soon".

(Why is this at the top of HN? There has to be a network of biased people upvoting this...)

clemesha··on The Wiki Game for iOS
Thanks. Totally agree with the "I wish it wasn't so" sentiment, as I know JavaScript way better than Objective-C. (That said, I ended up finding Xcode and Objective-C fairly pleasant after getting the hang of it).
clemesha··on The Wiki Game for iOS
I got pretty darn far with jQuery Mobile before I realized that I was going to just build something I wasn't proud of. I did really put a good effort into it though.

Jittery, slow, and inconsistent scrolling and page transitions were (sadly enough) the thing that made me just go with Objective-C.

clemesha··on The Wiki Game for iOS
Here are some promo codes:

79FXHYAJ3LPJ 49KRAEH4WMMW W4WWR797KKHF R3WEELLMLAMF NNPYNA9K394W

Let me know if these don't work anymore.

clemesha··on The Wiki Game for iOS
I built this as a companion to my web app http://TheWikiGame.com. Started it as an HTML5 app (using jQuery Mobile and Phonegap), but I abandoned them in favor of Objective-C, which turned out to be a choice I'm very happy with. Native scrolling was the single biggest thing that convinced me to go with Objective-C.
clemesha··on JQuery Mobile 1.0
I'd love to ask the hundreds of people on Twitter, and elsewhere, exclaiming "Awesome, jQuery Mobile 1.0 is out!", this one question:

Which app, that you use, built with jQuery Mobile, is excellent?

clemesha··on Avoid using the term "Cloud Computing" except when being ironic
"IaaS" is often pronounced "ice". And "Paas"/"Saas" is "pass"/"sass". Useful for geeks. "Cloud" works for non-geeks.
clemesha··on Easter Island heads have bodies
Totally agreed. Come to lamernews.com.
