cl3misch··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
Tiny nitpick: you actually can pin messages in Signal group chats. It's a pretty recent addition though.

Apart from that, I would have been interested in more details about the author's experience with ~Revolt~ Stoat. To my naive eyes it looks pretty nice. I really like the nuanced takes about the other platforms in this article, so I'd guess the author has some good reasons to dismiss Stoat like that.

How do you search messages from before you joined the mailing list?
cl3misch··on Show HN: SymDerive – A functional, stateless symbolic math library
FWIW the afaik most common symbolic math Python library sympy does that on the first page of their tutorial. I think in this space it's pretty common.

https://docs.sympy.org/latest/tutorials/intro-tutorial/intro...

I have to admit that I still like to use the ancient

    from pylab import *
in scripts that only I will ever see. It makes it so much easier to use numpy in a "tool of thought" way. I would never do this in a library, though.
cl3misch··on The Everdeck: A Universal Card System (2019)
The emojis do show up on iOS Safari!
cl3misch··on The largest zip tie is nearly 4 feet long and $75
Not OP, but I think they meaning cutting it as flush with the cable tie "head" as possible.
cl3misch··on A list of fun destinations for telnet
Thanks! Admittedly I didn't check before writing my comment. It does indeed still work! Maybe one has to enable ipv6.
cl3misch··on A list of fun destinations for telnet
I was wondering why the Starwars one is not at the top of the list. Then I saw it no longer exists :-(
cl3misch··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
Source? I guess you're thinking of long tap → Airdrop, but that essentially shares a link to the Appstore via Airdrop. You're not transfering the app itself.
cl3misch··on List of individual trees
While this is interesting and impressive, I kinda relate more to OP's link of more "normal" trees. Going through the list gives me a feeling how many cool trees there are all over the place.
cl3misch··on Python: Tprof, a Targeting Profiler
I'm wondering, is the overhead a problem for you because it skews profiling results, or does it lead to the overall runtime becoming too long?

So far I thought profiling might add overhead but the results themselves should be unaffected (modulo the usual pitfalls).

cl3misch··on Ask HN: Iran's 120h internet shutdown, phones back. How to stay resilient?
Bitchat https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitchat

Surprised to not see it mentioned (more) in this thread. Uses Bluetooth and can bridge via Nostr.

cl3misch··on Ask HN: Iran's 120h internet shutdown, phones back. How to stay resilient?
But unfortunately Android only? (not the fault of Briar, still unfortunate)
cl3misch··on Vojtux – Unofficial Linux Distribution Aimed at Visually Impaired Users
Are there "official" Linux distributions?
cl3misch··on How Thomas Mann wrote The Magic Mountain
> an upstanding burgher obsessed with death and corruption

I assume "burgher" is a misspelling of German "Bürger"? There are "Burgher people" but Thomas Mann doesn't seem to be one of them.

cl3misch··on Go away Python
> bash obviously is just using OS commands with syntactic sugar

No, bash is technically not "more" OS than e.g. Python. It just happens that bash is (often) the default shell in the terminal emulator.

cl3misch··on I can't upgrade to Windows 11, now leave me alone
Afaik you can install Win11 without TPM but you won't get Windows updates then. If I'm okay to not get updates I might as well stay on Win10?
cl3misch··on Show HN: Shittp – Volatile Dotfiles over SSH
That requires the remote machine to be configured to SSH into your local machine. In the scenario where OP's project is useful (SSH to foreign machines) I might not want that.

On the other hand, if the remote machine is mine, it will have my config anyway.

cl3misch··on Chat-tails: Throwback terminal chat, built on Tailscale
I don't want to be that guy, but I have to ask: this is ephemeral, unauthenticated chat for a handful of people over netcat. Why does it pull >1GB of dependencies?
cl3misch··on Smartphone without a battery (2022)
> Basic phone charger <1A USB power supply was not enough to even finish booting, but a ~2A was enough to boot and launch octo4a

So it's drawing >1A over a single diode? Let's say 1.4A and 700mV voltage drop over the diode, then it's roughly 1W over the diode. Won't it get pretty hot?

cl3misch··on An SVG is all you need
I think HTML is exactly the "client-side multimedia file format" you want. I guess what we don't have is an established editor UI. You have to create it yourself.

It's if we had the .docx format but MS Word was read-only. You would have to create the XML and zip it yourself, to be then rendered by Word. That's effectively how I see HTML+js in browsers.

cl3misch··on Nokia N900 Necromancy
I think OP wants it to be an always-on device. The last sentence in the post is

> Nokia N900 enjoying its new life as an online radio device using Open Media Player.

But I agree with your sentiment. Using supercaps seems overengineered to me if the device is connected anyway.

cl3misch··on Show HN: Lockenv – Simple encrypted secrets storage for Git
That's handy and obviously a major security increase compared to sharing on Discord, but I feel compelled to quote the age README:

> Keep in mind that people might not protect SSH keys long-term, since they are revokable when used only for authentication, and that SSH keys held on YubiKeys can't be used to decrypt files.

https://github.com/FiloSottile/age?tab=readme-ov-file#encryp...

cl3misch··on The state of Schleswig-Holstein is consistently relying on open source
I find Onlyoffice to be the closest alternative. It presents itself as a hosted office platform but you can actually install it locally and it feels just like an office program.

It's not the most efficient, being effectively a webview. But its UI and compatibility is imho much better than LibreOffice.

cl3misch··on Scoop: Judge Caught Using AI to Read His Court Decisions
I read the article as him writing the text himself and using AI just for turning it into audio. Which is evidently frowned upon, but to me doesn't constitute AI taking over policy making.
cl3misch··on Signal knows who you're talking to (2023)
What about the possibility of the number being re-registered with someone else and them using it with Signal? They won't obtain your chats of course, but this workflow with a throwaway number doesn't really work for more than short term use?
cl3misch··on The New AI Consciousness Paper
If you accept the premise that the consciousness is computable then pausing the computation can't be observed by the consciousness. So the world being a controlled workspace in my eyes doesn't contradict a consciousness existing?
cl3misch··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
It doesn't stop him from what? Living his private life? As the article explains, being digitally cut off from the US is pretty inconvenient in daily life.
cl3misch··on FAWK: LLMs can write a language interpreter
For the same reason we have Advent of Code: for fun!

I mean, he's not solving the puzzles with AI. He's creating his own toy language to solve the puzzles in.

cl3misch··on Ohm Editor

cl3misch··on Reminder to passengers ahead of move to 100% digital boarding passes
It has to be compatible with the physical scanners at the airport, e.g. before security. So Ryanair probably is not very flexible in how they design the code.
