cl3misch··on Mojo programming language will become open-source soon
The title makes me happy, but the link just goes to a signup page?

Their homepage (https://mojolang.org/) states

> The Mojo standard library is fully open-source on GitHub and we welcome contributions! We also plan to open-source the Mojo compiler in 2026.

Their roadmap (https://mojolang.org/docs/roadmap/) doesn't say anything about it.

The tomography was done at a synchrotron (ESRF), and with beamtime being very expensive it would be a net-negative to scan lottery tickets, unfortunately...
cl3misch··on Codex logging bug may write TBs to local SSDs
There have been Issues on Github about the same problem since April. I'm using Codex a lot and I'm very happy with its performance (UX and output), but it's baffling they haven't fixed this problem.
cl3misch··on How many of the 170k English words do you know?
I like it a lot, but unfortunately you can cheat a bit: there are always two opposite answers and two unrelated ones. The correct answer is (almost?) always one of the opposites.

> What sucks about co-authorship in research papers is that you don't get a clean breakdown of who contributed what to the research paper

Why? If you read a research paper for its content this is not especially important.

This thread is more about the people of course, and here we care, but that's not the point of a research paper.

Have you actually tried that? If you specifically erase the center, the image does change a lot at first, but rebuilds itself eventually (albeit to a slightly different final state). It's uncanny how "biological" is feels!
cl3misch··on GameBoy Workboy
...but what do you do with it? Play emulators? The Playdate has bespoke games designed for it, and many people say it's worth the price.

Tbh I find it a bit weird to talk about leisure devices like a handheld in terms of pure specs as if it was a server for number crunching. I use it to have fun, and (for me at least) a huge part of that is UI and ease-of-use.

Would voices actually "echo away" in a literally bottomless pit?

cl3misch··on I Hate (Most) Keyboard 'Fn' Keys
Alt-F4 is the canonical shortcut for closing a window

F2 is the canonical key for renaming

F5 is refresh

F11 is fullscreen

F1 is for help but admittedly I don't use that a lot

I can't think of a very frequent, standard use for the other keys. So I can't really disagree with having so many F keys being kinda unnecessary. But I'm happy to have them and they never bothered me.

> this device can be a bridge from a dumb phone to a smart-ish device, a device that’s not an actual smart phone

What do you mean exactly? Is it really a "bridge from/to" or rather a "compromise between"?

Wouldn't Flatpak be a solution to many of those problems? Develop the app against one Window Manager / Desktop environment and have them as requirements of the Flatpak?
cl3misch··on Cate v1.0 is out: The Infinite canvas workspace for developers
> Maybe the idea of having a "canvas editor" and building it on VS Code is not that unique...

Re-reading my comment made me realize it sounded condescending, where it was actually meant to emphasize that a canvas editor is a great idea! So I am very glad that there is development is this space.

Just felt the need to clarify this...

cl3misch··on Cate v1.0 is out: The Infinite canvas workspace for developers
This seems to be very similar to the (sadly abandoned) Haystack editor [1]. I was a bit surprised to find no mention of Haystack in the README or here in the comments. Maybe the idea of having a "canvas editor" and building it on VS Code is not that unique...

cl3misch··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
> I had to set my syncthing web GUI to be listening on all addresses instead of just 127.0.0.1. I don't love this approach, but again, this thing has nothing private on it.

OP mentions SOCKS proxy but you can also just port-forward the one web ui port instead:

    ssh -nNT writerdeck -L 8484:localhost:8384
and visit http://localhost:8484 on your normal machine.

Afaik Germany is one of the most expensive countries for employing white collar jobs?

The gross income to the employee might be 75k in Germany, but the cost to the employer is roughly twice that amount in turn.

In my (very naive) mental model, US salaries are higher, have less "overhead" for the employer, but leave more responsibility (healthcare, retirement) to the employee.

To me this sounds similar to Love2D. How is Carimbo different, from the perspective of a dev working with it?

cl3misch··on Migrating to the EU

cl3misch··on A Review of Dice that came with The White Castle (2025)
No, it's much too low. OP shows Pearson's X^2 for their results, but that alone is meaningless. p-value would be the interesting metric. I haven't computed it (although we could from the results) but I expect it to be very high, i.e. it's likely to observe these results even with perfect dice.

cl3misch··on What Python’s asyncio primitives get wrong about shared state
Is this being downvoted because of the tone, or because state machines are unpopular/inappropriate in this case?

Genuine question, because this feels like a sensible solution to the problem as stated in the article.

cl3misch··on Use the Mikado Method to do safe changes in a complex codebase
A difficult prerequisite for that might be untangling a very unatomic codebase into testable chunks. And to determine a feasible "level of abstraction" to write tests for. Testing a full pipeline of a numerical library might be as impractical as testing super tiny functions, because both won't allow you to really work on the codebase.
