ckrailo··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I've also been enjoying Dungeon Crawler Carl like many here. To scratch my neuroscience itch, I recently read:

Rethinking Consciousness: A Scientific Theory of Subjective Experience by Michael S. A. Graziano (https://link.amazon/B0fbKBxEU)

The World Behind the World: Consciousness, Free Will, and the Limits of Science by Erik Hoel (https://link.amazon/B05TPjEY6)

Greatly enjoyed both. Made me think about the thinking-machines future and our ever-increasing understanding of the human brain.

ckrailo··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
If he was using Ubiquiti instead of Blink, then it'd be a straight line Ubiquiti -> Home Assistant instead of the Alexa -> SmartThings -> VPS jumps.
ckrailo··on Thoughts on Mechanical Keyboards and the ZSA Moonlander
I got the smaller K7 gen2 with their now-discontinued clicky blues and love it; really like the very light activation force.
ckrailo··on Show HN: I built an app to block Shorts and Reels
Here's what I added to uBlock:

  ! YouTube
  ! Remove blue box

  ! Remove shorts

ckrailo··on Copyparty – Turn almost any device into a file server
Yup, here's a timestamp to the intro video where the author says it was "made for termux, born in termux": https://youtu.be/15_-hgsX2V0?t=889

ckrailo··on Why Tesla’s cars keep crashing
My self driving Tesla does better than most Tiktok-brained drivers. I know because I'm watching, just like the car. Two is better than one and I enjoy it thoroughly.
ckrailo··on Dancing brainwaves: How sound reshapes your brain networks in real time
In addition to musicforprogramming episodes, Colours of Ektoplazm is a 5 hour mix of goodness (great for focusing on a plane): https://ektoplazm.com/free-music/dj-basilisk-the-colours-of-...
ckrailo··on Ask HN: What cool skill or project interests you, but feels out of reach?
3Blue1Brown's youtube channel has a lot of visualizations that may help. Transformers are video #6 in his neural networks playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZHQObOWTQDNU6R1_6700...
ckrailo··on Website for Bay Area-born Victoria's falls victim to hackers
> Valued customer, we identified and are taking steps to address a security incident. We have taken down our website and some in store services as a precaution. Our team is working around the clock to fully restore operations. We appreciate your patience during this process. In the meantime, our Victoria’s Secret and PINK stores remain open and we look forward to serving you.
ckrailo··on Linux’s Sole Wireless/WiFi Driver Maintainer Is Stepping Down
I spent a whole weekend on my Vaio trying Linux distros for the first time, same dealbreaker as you, until I discovered that same magic feeling on first Ubuntu boot as well. Super cool to hear such a similar journey.
ckrailo··on Spline Distance Fields
The surfels and isolines examples were great, reminded me of reticulating splines! [1]

ckrailo··on DOOM CAPTCHA
Hold down the spacebar and let the enemies run in front of you. Might take two tries. No movement needed.
ckrailo··on Ghostty 1.0
I've been happy enough with Microsoft Terminal instead of PuTTY (and I appreciate the open source github repo). If you're comfortable with editing JSON files, you can save the SSH connections as profiles so you can click to open a new tab to whatever SSH session (or WSL setup, or Powershell setup) you want. ckrailo··on The Ugly Truth About Spotify Is Finally Revealed
I dislike ads even more than slop. Ads drove me to change stations to music I didn't care for and listen to the same CDs more times than I would have otherwise. Ads made broadcast radio unplayable as interaction-free background music.
ckrailo··on Google Demands That We Censor Our Content
Duckduckgo (uses Apple Maps) works just fine. Search for bakeries and observe every listing has a closing time or notes they're already closed. Bing maps works just fine. Search for bakeries and select "late lunch" in the hours dropdown.
ckrailo··on Bring back private offices
I've greatly enjoyed https://musicforprogramming.net/ since it's so easy to access, has free downloads, and a web player.
ckrailo··on The unreasonable effectiveness of i3, or: ten years of a boring desktop env
For folks wanting to use i3 in their Ubuntu environment, I'd highly recommend https://regolith-desktop.com/! It solved many of my own problems with wanting an i3 setup that "just works" without installing a different distro, plus has lots of nifty options and themes.
ckrailo··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
Home Assistant can cast dashboard/media/etc to your display, has shopping lists, and has voice assistance. https://www.home-assistant.io/
ckrailo··on Ruby Tip – Interactive debugging without the need for gems
Even better, thank you!
ckrailo··on Ruby Tip – Interactive debugging without the need for gems
I use `my_object.methods.sort - Object.methods` to help reduce the methods I need to consider.
ckrailo··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
I love the Surface tablets! Runs Windows, Linux (WSL), and Android (WSA) so covers almost any use-case I'd need. Stick to the ones with Intel processors for maximum compatibility.

ckrailo··on Bypass Paywalls: a browser extension to help bypass paywalls for selected sites
My understanding of the tool is that it actually _is_ the equivalent of avoiding looking at something. The browser either has been delivered the content already or has access to the content, but it's wrapped in an advertisement to subscribe instead of an advertisement for some third party. Looks like it uses the same mechanisms that tools like uBlock use.

Similarly, I avoid looking at the advertisements bundled in my USPS mail (which are often advertising subscriptions).

Something they've participated in every 2 years since 2000, as documented here: https://www.eff.org/cases?group=0-9

ckrailo··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
The DNSimple API for updating records makes me super happy. Easy to roll your own little DDNS script or to have proper domain names set in your Heroku Pipelines builds and test apps.
ckrailo··on Nova by Panic
> I like the default rainbow indentation, though I'm sure there's a VSC plugin for that.

I've enjoyed it for years now! https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=oderwat....
