ckardat123··on LobbyFacts – Exposing lobbying in European institutions
I commented above, but I'm currently working with U.S. lobbying data so I can help answer that question!

Here's the U.S. disclosure site: https://lda.senate.gov/filings/public/filing/search/

I've been working on building an improved version of that site (allowing users to search by the issue being lobbied on, show trends by company, etc.) but it's still in the pretty early stages of development. Have a big update coming in the next few weeks though: https://www.quiverquant.com/lobbyingsearch/

OpenSecrets also does great work summarizing lobbying data: https://www.opensecrets.org/federal-lobbying

Very cool! I've been working with U.S. lobbying data recently, and it's interesting to compare with what's going on in the Europe.

If anyone is interested, here's my project combining data on proposed legislation, U.S. lobbying by publicly traded companies, and congressional stock trading: https://www.quiverquant.com/sources/behind-the-curtain/

ckardat123··on ChatGPT can help yield more accurate stock trading predictions – study
That's why I included the part about hedging against the market. There may be days where almost every stock goes down, but generally only around half will every go down more than the market.

That's why I included the part about also hedging against the market.

Not that it's particularly easy to do, but if you took out an equal weighted short position on the $SPY while going long on some ticker, it would pay off if that ticker outperformed the market.

ckardat123··on ChatGPT can help yield more accurate stock trading predictions – study
The scheme definitely could get foiled if people were just told that a certain stock would go up (without hedging against the market), because if it's a red day for the market the whole e-mail list could get wiped out as all the stocks go down.

I would think that there is approximately a 50% chance of most stocks beating the market on any given day though.

If you send a bunch of e-mails saying "${ticker} will go up more than the market tomorrow, I'd recommend you invest and hedge with a bet against the market" for a variety of random tickers, I'd guess around half of them would pay off.

ckardat123··on Show HN: Quiver Quantitative Stock Screener
Just released the first version of a stock screener for the data on the Quiver platform. It allows you to sort and filter by data on congressional stock trading, insider trading, corporate lobbying, social sentiment, and more.

Please let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions!

ckardat123··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
This page shows Jim Cramer's recent stock picks, alongside a backtest of an Inverse Cramer strategy:

https://www.quiverquant.com/cramertracker/

The strategy logic is a bit different than the ETF is being rolled out - this one shorts all the tickers he is talking about the most (whether he is bearish or bullish) and hedges with a long position on the market.

ckardat123··on Show HN: Summarize.tech: YouTube summarizer powered by the new ChatGPT API
I'm surprised by how fast/good these summaries are - well done!

I'm curious what prompt you used to generate them? If you don't mind me asking - I'm not sure how proprietary that is.

ckardat123··on Show HN: Congressional Stock Trading Dashboard v2
I’ve been collecting and publishing data on stock trading by politicians for the past three years. This is the first biggest update I’ve made to the dashboard I built tracking congressional stock trading, and figured there might be some interest here.

Here’s a quick overview of features which were added:

- On the homepage, you can now see data on how stocks have performed since a congressional trade, in the “Recent Trades” table.

- At the bottom of the page is a chart tracking the performance of a Congress Long-Short algorithmic trading strategy.

- If you search for a congressman at the top, you can see all the trades I have on record for that politician.

- If you search for a ticker, you can see all trades of that ticker alongside of a graph showing trades plotted on a price chart for the stock.

- You can pull up even more information on a trade by clicking a row in any of the tables. This page shows details on the transaction, as well as a graph showing the stock’s performance before and after the trade was made.

ckardat123··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
Missed that, thank you
ckardat123··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
This is an interesting article, but I think it's hard to form any conclusions about the correct way to parent children from this information due to the inherent selection bias.

It may be true that a lot of exceptional people were taken seriously by their parents and given serious responsibilities, but I think that also may be due to the parents realizing that their children were exceptional. If you have a child who's closer to average intellect, you might not get the same outcome.

It's also possible that these approaches just increase the variance of outcomes. So it might be that they generate exceptional people 1% of the time, but generate miserable people who accomplish nothing 99% of the time.

I don't think that this is likely to be true to that magnitude, and I think a lot of the advice seems pretty good intuitively (I feel like being treated seriously by my parents when I was young was a big benefit), but am curious if there is any more data-driven approach to the question of how to best raise your kids.

ckardat123··on Less gym time, same results: Why ‘lowering’ weights is all you need to do
The mass would halve, because you are now only lifting one dumbbell with one arm instead of two dumbbells with two arms.
ckardat123··on Less gym time, same results: Why ‘lowering’ weights is all you need to do
It would be the same burden. You're still using the same dumbbell, you're just working one arm at a time instead of two.
ckardat123··on Less gym time, same results: Why ‘lowering’ weights is all you need to do
This is what I was wondering as well. I suppose it cuts down on rest time between sets, because you can rest one arm while lifting with another.
ckardat123··on Show HN: Track Institutional Investors
Thanks - I actually track politicians on my site as well!

Here's a dashboard tracking U.S. Representatives: https://www.quiverquant.com/sources/housetrading

I also track corporate insiders - who are generally required to disclose within two days of when their inside transactions take place: https://www.quiverquant.com/insiders/

ckardat123··on Show HN: Track Institutional Investors
The data on this dashboard comes from 13F disclosures which institutional investment managers are required to file quarterly.

I collect data on the quarterly holdings of these funds, calculate changes in the stock holdings, combine the holdings data with data on stock prices at the end of the reporting period, and produce visualizations showing trends by ticker and by fund.

Calculating the quarterly changes in position proved to be more time-consuming than I expected, as you need to take all sorts of little things like stock splits into account. I think my code deals with all of the edge cases, but let me know if you have any suggestions for improvements or general feedback!

ckardat123··on Social media may prevent users from reaping creative rewards of profound boredom
I think it's hard to judge, because we have so many more tools and resources today which amplify creative output.

It might true that we are have more creative output today than we did 100 years ago, while also being true that social media stifles us from reaching our full creative potential.

ckardat123··on Show HN: What's going on behind the scenes in Congress
I'm not sure if reposts are allowed - I've posted this here before, but have made some significant improvements since then and wanted to try sharing again.

I've spent the last couple years collecting and sharing data on corporate lobbying and stock trading by U.S. politicians.

This new project is more or less a culmination of that work, as I am combining both of those datasets with new data on legislative activity in order to show which companies and politicians have financial interests in bills that are being worked on.

It allows you to:

A) track which bills Congress is working on,

B) check which public companies have lobbied on those bills, and

C) trace which congressmen have bought or sold stock in those companies

Please let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions!

ckardat123··on Visual effects for the Indian blockbuster “RRR”
I found it incredibly entertaining. I'd definitely recommend anyone watch at least through the second scene, at which point you'll probably know whether you'll enjoy the rest of the 3+ hour movie or not.
ckardat123··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
I haven't even unlocked the downvote button, and certainly don't have anyone on my small team downvoting you.

I don't think that anything in my 5 HN posts and handful of comments warrants a ban.

I've been posting less and less on Reddit recently, but I believe that if you block me on that platform my future posting should be hidden. Reddit posting was definitely big for early traction on my site, but I never used any inorganic methods to promote my work.

ckardat123··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
I'm operating on the assumption that the market has already priced the possibility of the CHIPS Act failing into the current price of $NVDA.

It's possible that new information will come out that will lead to the price of $NVDA dropping, but I think that your initial comment was pretty misleading as the new announcement has not lead to Pelosi's sale being profitable.

ckardat123··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
The comment above is plainly false though.

Pelosi's sale of Nvidia was timed incredibly poorly, if the goal was to avoid short-term price movement around the CHIPS Act news. $NVDA is up about 8% in the two days since the sale.

ckardat123··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
Yeah, I definitely don't want to write it off entirely.

The STOCK act passed 96-3, so while congress might not tend to be keen on regulating themselves, it's not completely allergic.

Interestingly, one of the 3 'no' votes on the STOCK act was later engaged in some of the fishiest trading I've seen around the start of COVID. Here's a visual I made on it:
