cjoelrun··on Vape Regulation Is Coming
I really hope regulations don't go that as far as this article describes. I realize that formal review of drug delivery products are important for safety, but the deadlines they're imposing will hurt what vaping has done for public air quality.

I don't vape, but I wish that everyone who smoked in public spaces would just switch to vaping because of how much better it is on everybody around them.

There's a way to getting to what regulators want, but demanding things happen on a timeline that not even they can keep up with is ridiculous and needs to be rethought.

cjoelrun··on Is alcohol actually bad for you?
Said another way: Exercise is conditioning cardiovascular ability. Drinking is conditioning the liver at processing a drug.

Too much of anything is bad, but one is obviously healthy when practiced often, the other is not.

cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Most hacker friendly laptop on the market?
Have you tried to make OS X keyboard friendly? Window Management - Spectacle: http://spectacleapp.com, App Launcher - Quicksilver: http://qsapp.com, also just learning each app's keybindings as I incorporate them into work.

OS X also has some of the best text manipulation in apps: https://coderwall.com/p/usc8qg/use-emacs-readline-key-bindin.... As a Emacs/Bash user, I haven't found anything as consistent, even in Linux.

For your missing keys Home = Cmd + Up, End = Cmd + Down, PgUp = Shift + Space, PgDn = Space, Delete = control + d

cjoelrun··on Why I Quit Coffee and How That's Been Working Out
I've had the same experience. I had coffee all through my college years. Had a few scattered experiences with anxiety attacks, but I always attributed them to test stress.

After I started working and the responsibility and the need for creativity grew, I found the anxious episodes start to grow and become quite debilitating. I started to experiment with different parts of my lifestyle: sleep, caffeine, exercise, relaxation.

In the end I narrowed it down to caffeine. The anxiety went away. I felt more awake throughout the day and sleep cycles easier to maintain.

I don't want to claim too much on creativity, but I do feel the ability to relax and let my mind wander has eased the creative process. Instead of the laser focus I'd get when on caffeine my mind could calmly move to less pressing tasks and make those subliminal connections I would have missed if I was too set on an issue.

That said I do miss the taste of coffee. I'll occasionally sip a decaf or latte and feel some of those symptoms return slightly, but knowing its cause has helped a lot.

cjoelrun··on Ask HN: Which book are you reading these days?
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy. Intriguing, hilarious, and fun. I recommend this to anyone.
cjoelrun··on LG: “Apple has also announced that they will release the iMac 8K”
My Sony z3c is 1280x720. Battery lasts 3 days. I'm terrible at charging my phone. If I had an iPhone again it would be dead half the day.

Org mode to LaTeX conversion makes the production much less time consuming.
cjoelrun··on Deis v1.0 – Production Ready
Spent a couple days attempting to deploy using Rackspace tutorial. Wasn't able to get it to work. I will be taking another look, hopefully deployments have been worked out.
cjoelrun··on Google’s New Bookmarking Service, Previously Called Stars, Has Gone Live
I made the mistake of heavily using this after delicious went away (and is now back :S). I'm at a loss at what I should do now.
cjoelrun··on Using GNU Stow to manage your dotfiles
I gave GNU Stow a try, but thought it did too much.

Ended up using dotfiles (https://pypi.python.org/pypi/dotfiles). My dotfiles (https://github.com/cjoelrun/dotfiles). I handle system specific stuff in each config: OS checks in zsh, emacs, tmux configs. Allows me to move between OSX and Arch linux.

cjoelrun··on VMWare: vSphere Web Client sucks so bad
Not sure what your use case is, but why not build your own tools? As a previous user of OpenStack, the UI was not terrible but as an administrator I found it useless except very simple things. I wrote scripts for tasks regularly carried out.

I haven't had experience with vSphere's UI, but if it's anywhere as terrible as the vCloud Director UI, why not write some stuff to make your life easier. VMware recently open sourced some vSphere python bindings: https://github.com/vmware/pyvmomi

cjoelrun··on An Introduction to Computer Networks
This is fortunate. I've been looking for a good networks introduction and there doesn't seem to be many online networks courses.

As for literature, is there any text that most people agree is a good start into networks? I'm interested in the OSI model and other network architecture and design principles.
