cjk2··on Six Degrees of Reform UK – Mapping the UK's Entrepreneurial Far Right
That is true. However The Conservatives have a lot of satellite companies run by politicians. There are some fairly well known ones even though it's not obvious they are run by party members.
cjk2··on Taking a closer look at AI's supposed energy apocalypse
It's not about an energy apocalypse at all. It's about the cost versus benefit when the principal cost on large scale deployments is energy. AI stuff takes a lot of energy to run therefore costs a lot of money to run therefore requires revenue that matches the energy used.

Now the problem is that if someone puts a $10/month price on the AI functionality, they will stop paying for it because it doesn't really have a $10/month ROI.

Literally every AI thing I've seen people use has got an interest taper off way before the free trial even ends.

The constraining factor will prevent an energy apocalypse: It doesn't materially improve most people's lives at all.

Why not?

Hammer meet screw.

Companies House is already a large graph of companies and ownerships. You can do this with naive methods easier.

Gah. Hopes dashed. I appreciate you pointing this out to me though.

I disagree. I have a bet they will kill the console market dead by 2029. Most of the games run on off the shelf tech now which has Metal back ends. The hardware is rapidly evolving in capability since 2020. The Pro devices now are quite powerful. Enough grunt to do a half decent job of being a console. When that is commoditised in the mid-range, the existing market looks rather attractive to game developers. There's also an existing marketplace (app store) and the end users, from those who I know are fucked off with Sony and Microsoft.

Yeah you're not going to run top end games at 4k on them but most people don't do that either. And the market for optimising them towards the large market scope makes sense.

Example of what is already on the market and in people's pockets. You can connect a controller and 4k display to it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRAOBEtQ_MY

now get them for the local account thing, onedrive integration, privacy and all the other shit.

In a couple of years I bet that has changed.

You can take it to bits fine. But is there a supply chain of parts?

> I have no idea why the EU isn't going after Microsoft with a heavy club for all the crap they're pulling lately.

Did someone get a O365 license reduction or a nice dinner out. MS rep used to take me out to dinner in the 90s to get us to use NT+Visual Basic. Free dinner with asshats - worth it. We used Solaris in the end and Sun only gave us hats.

cjk2··on Windows 11 is now enabling OneDrive folder backup without asking permission
Microsoft bundle edge still and it can't be removed, even in windows 11 LTSC. Constant nagging if you don't accept O365/OneDrive unless you eviscerate the machine thoroughly or use a cracked LTSC build.

As for Apple, no. Literally I get asked once about stuff and then never again.

cjk2··on Windows 11 is now enabling OneDrive folder backup without asking permission
Not by saying "no" you can't. You have to fuck around with shift+F10 and oobe stuff. This was tested on 23H2 yesterday.
cjk2··on Windows 11 is now enabling OneDrive folder backup without asking permission
Why the hell aren't the EU and the FTC suing the shit out of them for bundling, telemetry, lock in, gouging, shitty defaults?
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
5G was a fun one. When they built the 5G tower near me they didn't put any equipment in it. People complained about it at local planning meeting saying that it was giving them migraines, then someone burned it down. I moved and I have 5G but they still don't.
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
Well it would require more data which is the problem, and something I outlined elsewhere. Is she the only person complaining? The case is put forward as if that is the case. If that is the case then there is little evidence to discard the null hypothesis that there's nothing wrong and either alternate hypothesis that it's the Apple facility or the previously contaminated site seem very unlikely.
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
Yeah this is not within the realms of even an 0.1% confidence interval. Indistinguishable from chance. Hypothesis should be investigated and then discarded!

That doesn't make a good headline though.

cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
This is in line of when I worked in a semiconductor lab in suburban UK in the 90s. We had a couple of local residents report problems immediately even though we hadn't even started fabrication at that point. They eventually sent out a press release saying that we had moved manufacturing to Scotland. The complaints stopped instantly. The lab was running until at least 2017 with no complaints and regular inspections from local authorities.

YMMV but some people are crazy. The EPA is however not. But what the EPA say and what the woman claims are disparate.

Edit: to be clear I'd expect the EPA to install independently maintained monitoring equipment which is not subject to the bias of Apple or the reporter. Then collect more data!

cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
I'm not in the US. There are other countries with this problem :)
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
It's not corruption. It's naive legislation written by idiots and complex HS code manipulation.
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
One of the many reasons. The biggest reason the last place I worked at that did manufacturing was that there were import tariffs on components but not assemblies so they just built the assemblies in China.
cjk2··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
While I don't doubt the facts and EPA analysis around the case and the measurements, how many other local residents reported this and are fighting it?
cjk2··on Why your brain is 3 milion more times efficient than GPT-4
Surely it can, just slowly and with poor accuracy :)
cjk2··on Microsoft insiders worry the company has become just 'IT for OpenAI'
The latter makes its way into products occasionally. Which helps the customer. A lot of the stuff I use comes from research not a product team.
cjk2··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
So your approach and the author’s is to dumb a technical measure down to a level where the observer doesn’t need to understand what they are looking at.

Well that explains the entire data visualisation and dashboard consultancy nicely.

How does anyone rationalise the information they have if they don’t make an effort to understand it. Or how can they even select a visualisation method or comparison method. We are truly fucked!

cjk2··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
They teach this to 15 year olds in the UK.

If it's a bad plot, perhaps some introspection is required...

cjk2··on Why your brain is 3 milion more times efficient than GPT-4
It’s not really mathematics though. That’s an abstract concept which is my point.
cjk2··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
Nope.

I'm not one to appeal to authority either which is why I am making objective arguments about what is presented.

And yes he should go on a stats course. I dread to think the chaos he’s spread to people who don’t know better.

cjk2··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
Oh I know the author.

Just because you’re high profile in the data viz industry doesn’t mean you should be commenting on statistics especially with such a clear misunderstanding going on.

Some of us are definitely more qualified to speak on these matters and we still don’t think we’re qualified to teach it.

cjk2··on I've stopped using box plots (2021)
Some of us are perfectly qualified to understand them and the nuances.
