cjaybo··on A Brainfuck interpreter written in PostScript
Some people just love pain it seems
cjaybo··on Should you split that file?
They should at least address the actual points raised by the article (which does already touch on the trade offs involved in doing what the commenter suggests, none of which were addressed by their comment). As it stands it sounds like they’re responding to nothing more than the title of the post.

It’s a shallow criticism by HN standards.

cjaybo··on Jaq – A jq clone focused on correctness, speed, and simplicity
“Brevity is the soul of wit”

Maybe we have different goals but I don’t get paid to write witty code and I don’t think anyone on my team would appreciate it if I did.

I don’t think the redeeming qualities of brevity in prose transfer to something like terse syntax.

cjaybo··on Modern C++ Programming Course
It’s almost as if this is some sort of discussion board where people can expand on the topic as they see fit :D
cjaybo··on Stripe live dashboard
> Direct air capture is literally removing carbon from the atmosphere, regardless of what's done with the carbon afterwards

Regardless of what’s done afterwards? Sure, if we arbitrarily decide to ignore the full effects of any system we can make all sorts of fanciful claims. That’s not exactly useful, though.

cjaybo··on Cats that fetch are an evolutionary mystery
Is this not what dogs are doing when playing fetch, as well?
cjaybo··on Shellcheck finds bugs in your shell scripts
Are you implying that Bash is 10x faster than Java or Go?
cjaybo··on After Boeing declines to pay up, ransomware group leaks 45 GB of data
Are these rational actors who would even care about the collective long term effects? Eg the same could be said for drug dealers ripping off their customers, but that still happens daily because they often prioritize short term self interest over long term/collective concerns.
cjaybo··on David Attenborough is now narrating my life
Well Picasso wasn’t much of a legislator, and I don’t think his point was that all artistic theft is justifiable to begin with.
cjaybo··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
> I was left with a feeling that most of it is inconsistent garbage papered over with lambda functions

This sounds more like an indictment of the system design than the cloud provider.

What are some of these “3am” topics that made GCP a better choice?

cjaybo··on Hey, computer, make me a font
Here’s my stupid question of the day:

Would you mind to explain what you mean by “native” in this context?

cjaybo··on On Desktop GUI Minimalism
I know this isn’t the point of your post, but in case it helps your experience in MacOS:

1. You can change the setting so that workspaces do not change their position/order. See: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/214348/how-to-prev...

2. The third party app “alt-tab” provides an alt tab experience that is much better than the native one, and is likely more similar to the behavior you expect from Linux. See: https://alt-tab-macos.netlify.app

I also personally like to use Rectangle for window positioning using keyboard shortcuts, tried the various auto tiling solutions like yabai and amethyst in the past but I think the flexibility of Rectangle is worth having to remember and use a few keyboard shortcuts.

I think it’s unfortunate that so many third party apps are required, but with a bit of babysitting MacOS can be pretty decent to work with.

cjaybo··on Morocco earthquake kills more than 1,000
You seem to be reading into and responding somewhat defensively to subtext that doesn’t appear to exist
cjaybo··on The worst programmer I know
> but managers aren’t acting in good faith

An overly broad statement which, my experience, is not true. Managers come in many shapes.

Although, I suppose ironically, if you act in bad faith as a response to this perception, then I think that perception will quickly become true.

cjaybo··on Amazon acquires Fig
Once they dry off after leaving the hiring pool at least
cjaybo··on Mounting your iPhone on your motorcycle can damage its camera (2022)
Nobody here seems to be advocating for not using GPS at all (or stopping periodically to check GPS on your phone, as mentioned above) — they’re advocating for proper GPS devices that can withstand the daily wear and tear to some reasonable degree.
cjaybo··on Fart Proudly (c. 1781)
In what ways?
cjaybo··on HashiCorp adopts Business Source License
“The window can’t move”

I’d kill for your confidence

cjaybo··on Reflex – Web apps in pure Python
Since when is Python the “default choice” for server side dev?
cjaybo··on AWS networking concepts in a diagram
Well if it’s that simple and 37 signals did it, then obviously everyone should!

It’s not like your description is ridiculously reductive, or like 37 signals/dhh have a history of attention seeking behavior that might drive them to make technical decisions on the basis of PR value. Never!

cjaybo··on C++23: The Next C++ Standard
Suggesting a function that doesn’t exist in C++ definitely qualifies as annoying :D
cjaybo··on Toward a Better Music Theory (2013)
I don't think "advances" implies that something is subjectively better, but that it builds upon previous techniques and methods in some way.

You can dislike synthesizers and samples all you want, but there's no denying that they opened up new creative avenues for composers and sound designers.

cjaybo··on Show HN: I'm building a browser-based DAW
If you know anything about music production, you'd know it's a very valid critique. Not sure why you took it so personally, though.
cjaybo··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
If you read beyond those three words, I think it's very clear that they mean removing.
cjaybo··on Web Push for Safari
Firefox lets you do this for each permissions category (notifications, camera/mic access, etc).
cjaybo··on Apple Unveils M2
I think "maybe" is an important part of the text you quoted, and the rest of the comment goes into decent detail regarding the specific areas where the experience fell short of their expectations.

Did you stop reading after the first paragraph?

cjaybo··on Embracing Modern C++ Safely, Book Review
Even if they want to take ownership, smart pointers allow the semantics to be expressed clearly and in a safe manner.
cjaybo··on Profiles of people living in homeless encampments, rarely what you’d expect
Kind of an unproductive response, I'd point you to the site guidelines about reading charitably.

As someone who spent some time homeless during the peak of a past heroin addiction, I can tell you that the comment you replied to comes across a lot more grounded than yours.

cjaybo··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
Considering that the loneliness seems to be a byproduct of feeling like the smartest person in the room, I think it could be a good perspective shift. There are always smarter people and harder problems.
cjaybo··on Moving a macOS window by clicking anywhere on it
I recently started using the pro version for the custom shortcuts. On a portrait mode monitor I like to split the pane vertically into thirds, so it makes that possible. It's also a pretty cheap buy at $10.
