cja··on My toddler still loves planes, so I upgraded her radar
There can be a temptation as a parent to practice our hobby in a way that makes us feel that we are engaging with our child when actually our child would be just fine with FlightRadar and more of daddy.

I'm not judging (really) because every family has different circumstances and every person is different, I just know that I jumped into this trap a few times and you are reminding me of myself back then.

Brain Rules for Baby is an excellent way to learn how your child works, or at least I found to be so.

Anyway, you're nearly at Brio and then Lego and it gets better and better...

I think you mean swipe. Swype was a brilliant third party keyboard app for Android which was better at text prediction and manual correction than Gboard is today. If however you really do still use Swype then please tell me how because I miss it.

I actually use Pushover for a project but it just does the notification part and requires me to catch all errors and send them to Pushover. I'm looking for the hosting service to catch unhanded errors automatically
cja··on Deno Cron
My first question when I am considering a product like this is how can I get an email when there's an error in my application. Why isn't that in the top level feature list of everything like this, or am I unusual in thinking that this is an essential feature of any hosting system?

cja··on I was happy, sad, lost and lonely without a smartphone at the same time
KeePassXC has Google Authenticator-compatible 2fa on Windows. I expect other programs do too, and for Mac and Linux. No need to keep a smartphone only for 2fa, unless you need something that Google Authenticator can't do

Every system I've ever made has better error reporting that that one. Even those that only I use. First thing I get working in a new project is the system to tell me when something fails and to help me understand and fix the problem quickly. I then use that system throughout development such that it works very well in production. I'd love to talk to the people who made the system discussed in the article. Is one of them reading this? Can you explain how come this problem reported itself so badly?

cja··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
If you can't fix your loneliness in another way then you may not be ready to be a good parent.

Separately, is it ethical to decide on behalf of another person that they should be born? (I sentence you to life...)

Creating humans to solve your problems sounds unethical.

Thanks, i uploaded the terms and conditions of some insurance I'm considering and am able to ask it questions without having read it all myself. (Obviously I'm double checking for accuracy in case of hallucinating but i suspect it won't be long before I have the confidence not to do so.)

The crazy thing is I fell asleep a few hours ago wondering how to feed the insurance terms and conditions to ChatGPT so that I could query them, and then I woke up and saw this.

All this AI progress opens up so many possibilities that it's almost anxiety-inducing

cja··on Emptying the dishwasher with systems theory
This means that you:

- always have sufficient time and motivation to empty it immediately when you see that the programme has finished, and

- always have sufficient time and motivation to put dirty things in it as soon as you have used them.

I'm jealous.

cja··on The link between August birthdays and ADHD (2018)
He literally starts the book by saying that he didn't know much about ADHD until four or five years before writing and then he and his three(?) sons were all diagnosed with it and then (or so I gather because I stopped reading then) he comes up with some novel theories contradicting the experts in the field.

There's so much evidence-based material to read from people who have spent decades studying ADHD that it's a shame instead to waste time on Mate. He may be an expert in some things, just not this

cja··on The link between August birthdays and ADHD (2018)
Any sources?

ADHD is a diagnosis based on symptoms. It has a number of causes. Your mental health professionals would prefer different diagnostic criteria. Those other criteria would result in a different set of people being diagnosed with ADHD. The current diagnostic criteria are symptoms that cause problems for the sufferer. Thus successful treatment of ADHD as currently diagnosed improves lives. Why is the diagnostic criteria you describe better?
