citywide-fondue··on Amsterdam police confiscates server left-wing ISP A/I at American request
Replying to myself: my current theory is that the Dutch regime weighed the risk of political potential blowback from the U.S. (specifically executive office), and did not consider it worthwhile protecting the final servers of a group that is winding down anyways.

Again, would love to hear a domain expert weigh in! Also because I walk past this data center every day :)

I understand that there are complex global supply chains, but my expectation is A) that these are somewhat mutually beneficial relations and B) that their day-to-day operation is somewhat confined to non-governmental spheres.

From my reading of the article, it seems like the U.S. was able to order around the police in Amsterdam without going through a system to check if the Dutch government approves of the action. That’s mostly my confusion.

I am a bit surprised to hear that the U.S. government can still order around Dutch police like a butler. Maybe the Dutch regime is struggling to actually effectively decouple themselves from the U.S.? Would love to hear an expert weigh in.
citywide-fondue··on Mug Shots: A Small Town Noir (2014)
It strikes me that every time I view a mugshot, I feel a pang of mild disdain and secondhand shame. In those moments, I can only abstractly reason that the subjects might very well be innocent, or simply victims of fate. But, I mostly feel shame. I wonder if it is time to ban or severely limit the practice.

In what sense could this be “general purpose”? The blog talks about some specific parallel algorithms, but do you guys think something like this could or should replace consumer CPUs?

This seems like a unique perspective to me. Can you elaborate on those experiences you found most valuable?
citywide-fondue··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Names – With Examples
Name changes are not rare.

In recent decades, about 80 percent of brides choose to change their names after the wedding, both professionally and legally. [1] Most people marry at least once. [2] Women are half the population.

That being said, I do agree that in many systems, supporting name changes is not an immediate priority.

> "It seems some people believe that you get a name and it never changes. Not so, even in Western countries, where a person may change their name when they marry."

Since it is traditionally /women/ who change their names when married, this blind spot does not surprise me.
