citiguy··on Ask HN: How do you solve timezone offset problem in Front end
Maybe I'm not understanding the question but best practice is usually to store everything in the database in UTC time (or epoch time) and do the conversion using a localtime offset when you display it.
citiguy··on AWS hired 66 former US gov officials since 2018; half are from Dept of Defense
My ex-military officer friends tell me the corporate world is considerably harder than the military. Maybe it also depends on where you work / what you do.
citiguy··on Canada declares plastics toxic, paving the way for restrictions
The NYTimes magazine [1] ran a piece in 1996 says a 35 square mile landfill, 100 yards deep, will store all US trash until the year 3000. To put that in perspective, that's about 1 tenth of 1 percent of the range land currently available for grazing. I'm sure someone could find a corner in a desert somewhere for such a need if required.

citiguy··on SolarWinds: What Hit Us Could Hit Others
It's very possible there were several and nobody noticed them, or nobody attributed them correctly.

There are also the Spectre and Meltdown attacks which exploited Intel cpu pipeline bugs regardless of the OS running on them.

citiguy··on SolarWinds: What Hit Us Could Hit Others
But senior management is responsible for establishing the resource budget and dictating the requirements. Given infinite resources, conceivably an engineering team could make an infinitely secure product. But nobody has that (except maybe the military). Like all other computer problems, this comes down to the constraints and requirements.
citiguy··on Rocky Linux: A CentOS replacement by the CentOS founder
Agreed, the packages in Centos / RHEL are all super old. The RHEL license structure changes all the time and depending on which one you get it may or may not include the extended repos.
citiguy··on Rocky Linux: A CentOS replacement by the CentOS founder
Lately it seems to me Debian and Ubuntu have made some strange package decisions. They have morphed into a desktop oriented build with snap packages and auto-updates enabled by default (among other strange decisions). There's a ton of stuff we always end up disabling in the new release because it's super buggy and doesn't work well (I work at a small MSP). I'm not sure who replaced Ian Jackson, but Debian seems rudderless.

Centos was the rational other free choice, not that Red Hat hasn't made other equally strange decisions.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off rolling our own, like Amazon does.

citiguy··on I tried out-training my diet for 18 months
I've run multiple marathons in my life. When training and running > 20 miles / week, I could eat anything I wanted and still lose weight. I usually stayed around 170/lbs - about optimal for my frame. It didn't matter what I ate, and I've heard stories of people who just ate cheesecake or some such due to the calorie load.

Unfortunately I can no longer run and have since ballooned up to 200lbs.

You can definitely out-train a diet, it's sustaining it that's hard.

citiguy··on No, the new Arm MacBook Air is not faster than 98% of PC laptops
No, it says "Sold in the last year". That implies laptops sold in 2020. I agree, without quantifying anything it's just marketing.

More interestingly, will there be any software available I'll want to run? Running iPhone and iPad apps on a MacBook probably won't be very satisfying.

citiguy··on When X-Rays were used at the Shoe Store
Harder surfaces are actually easier to run on than dirt trails. You get much more of the energy you put down with each footfall back. This is important because your foot is basically a spring and designed to recover some of the energy put into making each step.
citiguy··on Add Vitamin D to bread and milk to help fight Covid, urge scientists
I was told by my endocrinologist not to take more than 5000UI of D. Above 5000 is toxic.
citiguy··on Apple Watch momentum is building
I have a 3. I got it in January and I'm still on the fence about it. It's okay, but not awesome, and sometimes darn irritating. I guess there's some merit as a cellphone replacement but I find the screen too small for that and Siri is just so-so.
citiguy··on Apple Watch momentum is building
That's strange. I've never had that problem. The battery on my 3 usually lasts for a couple of days.
citiguy··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
I have a dishwasher that I use regularly. I never do step a. I usually just take a napkin and dump anything left on the plate into the trash before putting it in the dishwasher. My manual says no pre-wash is necessary and I have never had a problem with this.

Using a rinse agent takes care of c (at least for me).

citiguy··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
Have you ever taken a dishwasher apart? I have and it's an unbelievably simple machine that they charge you big bucks for. There's a lot it could do but manufacturers are in the business of making money, not selling complex, hard to maintain machines.
citiguy··on Brown M&Ms, or Why No One Reads the Manual
Most people won't give a bad personal reference anymore because they are too afraid of being sued. We just say yes, the person worked here from this time to that time.
citiguy··on A Woman Who Needed to Be Upside-Down (2012)
Reader mode to the rescue!
citiguy··on How the Airbnb ban led to lower rental prices in Canada's major cities
Are people still visiting cities in this time of COVID? I suspect this has nothing to do with AirBNB getting banned and everything to do with people not wanted to get sick.
citiguy··on Announce bad news without lying to your team
I have found it always helps to prep. Especially before a big loaded topic like layoffs or finances. Taking the time to put together a presentation can help you frame your thoughts properly and make sure you don't miss any important highlights.
citiguy··on Renaming files with mv without typing the name two times
I tend to use tmux for this. Once you are proficient it is much easier to cut/paste without taking your hands from the keyboard. Admittedly the learning curve is way steeper than some bash expansions and/or a simple rewrite function.
citiguy··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
Agreed. My son missed 2 months of 4th grade a couple years ago and when he went back it was like he hadn't missed a day.
citiguy··on The Robber Bank: Can America Ever Rid Itself of Wells Fargo?
This is a puff piece for Elizabeth Warren.
citiguy··on Which of these Amazon Prime purchases are real?
Nice. Thanks!
citiguy··on Which of these Amazon Prime purchases are real?
Oh, that’s neat. What is this script called? How do you run it?
citiguy··on The iPad Awkwardly Turns 10
Wait - how does a Raspberry Pi help you here? Do you ssh into it from the iPad? How do you connect to it physically?
citiguy··on Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups
AWS has tools around this (lifecycle manager) that you can easily leverage for simple site backups. Or you can roll your own, honestly it is not that hard to take rolling snapshots.

Obviously hosting providers do not make it easy to extract your data because that's their vendor lock.

citiguy··on Show HN: PortManager – Manage ports from your macOS menu bar
I haven't tried this app, but lsof is usually very helpful at finding things like this on Linux.
citiguy··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard
Yes, I've been doing this for about a year on a $5 droplet and it's fine. I haven't had any issues with blocking (but maybe its the sites I visit)?

In fact, I also run a pihole on the same droplet, and that's fine too.

citiguy··on NYC housing prices in near 'free fall,' conditions mirror recession era
I think you can get a 1 Bedroom in Manhattan for less than a million - maybe $800k or so. But it will be further away from the subway. So in a neighborhood like Yorkville.

As always, it's all location, location, location, so it depends.

citiguy··on Will America's debt doom us?
I think it depends on where you live. $100k / year here in New York City is not a huge amount of money.
