circlingthesun··on Ending our third party fact-checking program and moving to Community Notes model
I once posted a picture of an email stating my train was delayed in French. So the word 'retard' appeared in it. Instagram banned me from monetization or partnerships or something on my account, because the word for delay in French is offensive in English.

It might be. I ran 30h race earlier this year and had no hallucinations. I've not done _exhaustive_ research on this, I'm just recalling some undergrad neuropsychology. It could also be the environment. I suspect it's a lot less likely that you'll be seeing stuff that isn't there when you are in a familiar environment as opposed to running alone in the bush.

I've never experienced auditory hallucinations before. I did however do a 42 hour self navigated run last year with 0 sleep. After about 30 hours I was visually hallucinating pretty much consistently. Amongst the things I saw was Darth Vader, a giant lego man, our cat sleeping on the trail, spectators that weren't there, a banker sitting at a desk staring at me, a church building that wasn't there, signs that didn't exist, and more.

I think it has to do with the way the human visual system effectively does edge detection and then groups those into objects and attaches meaning. When you are extremely sleep deprived, the edges gets grouped differently and you start seeing things that aren't there.

I could judge what was real or not based on likelihood of me seeing said things in the wilderness, or if I got close enough I would be able to tell what I was really looking at. Another runner later informed me that I had told him he wasn't real when he passed me.

circlingthesun··on I don’t have notifications enabled, nowhere and never
I had do not disturb on by accident the whole day yesterday. It was great, it made be wonder if I should enable it permanently. As the technical founder of a startup, I suspect it'll probably be to my detrimental when shit hits the fan.

I believe these are the people behind the asyncpg Postgres library for Python. We use it daily, thanks :)
circlingthesun··on CSS Gradients that avoid the “gray dead zone”
There is a related video by minute physics about how the RGB color space stores the square root of the brightness of each color channel, because human color perception is roughly logarithmic. Bad color blending is therefore pretty commonplace because it uses the average of square roots instead of the square root of the average of the original brightness values. circlingthesun··on Lottie – Use after effects animations in web and native apps
Lottie files can be converted, with some limitations, to native SVG SMIL animations via bodymovin-to-smil [1]. With SMIL animations you save 66.6k worth of gzipped javascript [2] and your animations run before any javascript kicks in (great for above the fold animations). SMIL seems to have gotten little attention as Chrome intended to deprecate it 6 years ago [3]. That seems no longer be the case [3] and now that IE 11 is dead, SMIL is supported by virtually all modern browsers [4]. We used SMIL animations on our home page [5] and it works really well. It would be great (for our designer) if bodymovin-to-smil supported more lottie features though.

circlingthesun··on Gitlab's Guide to All-Remote
As someone who lives in South Africa, it's quite frustrating to travel when you realise your money isn't worth shit in most developed countries. It financially restricts where you can go for how long and how often. Many imported things, like cars or computers, are actually more expensive here than in the States. Food, housing and other costs of living might be cheaper. It makes somewhere like Cape Town a great place for people with first world savings/income to holiday/retire. In a global economy someone earning local rates don't have the same kind of options.
circlingthesun··on Why is quicksort better than other sorting algorithms in practice? (2013)
I had an interesting experience sorting exam papers when I was a TA. I found that quicksort used up too much desk/floor space. I settled on splitting the papers into piles of 10 or so, applying insertion sort on each pile and then pairwise merge sorting them until I had a sorted pile.
circlingthesun··on CSS Utility Classes and “Separation of Concerns” (2017)
I love the analysis in this post. I think utility functions along with a set of design tokens (Styled System [1] / ThemeUI [2]) is a better mechanism and achieves the same end goal as utility-first CSS, at least in the React ecosystem.

circlingthesun··on Ok-Cancel versus Cancel-Ok
If you assume that people tend to consider all options before making a choice, putting the primary action on the right makes sense. If you put the primary action on the left, a user will see it first, but then read on to look at the other options. Once all options have been considered, the user has to go back to click the first option. If the primary action is last, the user can immediately click it once all options have been seen.
