ciokan··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?
For me it is clear that we will be doing our own simulations in the future. In short here's how I see our path in relationship with technology and it's rapid advancement:

human > transhuman > energy (in the grid): immortality at this stage > long period of answers about our universe, research and exploration > boredom > nostalgia > depression > take part in simulations where you dive in but to fully enjoy the "animalic" experience you have to forget who you were and start fresh. There are some experiences that only in relationship with death (and knowing that your existence is short) produce really positive effects. This story can get long and is filled with "ifs" but I don't dismiss the idea...at all.

ciokan··on The Way of the Gopher: Making the Switch from Node.js to Golang
Results talk. We make the switch to whatever works. I don't take the hype, I'm just grateful we can consider options.

ciokan··on Edward Snowden and spread of encryption blamed after Paris terror attacks
So we fight for liberty and privacy but blame the ones that risk their lives bringing it. I fear these attacks will convince everyone that mass surveillance is a necessary thing.

Surprisingly, you only need a few terrorists to change international laws and double those military budgets. Snowden or not, it's the virus that comes first and the anti-virus after. I don't think any mass surveillance program can stop such actions unless you become a militia state which I highly doubt (and hope not) will ever happen.

ciokan··on Six years of Go
Angular...React, are you serious? Haven't even tried Go tbh but I wouldn't even dare to make such a comparison on HN or anywhere else for that matter. You just don't do it. It's like saying that Go sucks, google maps is better.

Who cares about adoption rate? Is PHP the best language to make websites because of it's popularity? Hell no!

I tell you what I care (and I know I will eventually pick Go for these reasons):

- concurrency - parallelism - stability - speed - community - libraries - proper use of hardware - small footprint

While I don't agree with the way this ended up I really do sympathise with the owner of the restaurant or any other future owner for that matter. Things can get better on the side of his business but that article will stay there for who knows how long and, in these times, a few words on a website can bring a slow and painful death to a local business pretty easily. I could also be mean and start using such practices against my competition (not that it's not done already) chewing their customers bit by bit. I don't have a solution...just saying.
ciokan··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
A Psychiatrist is a Psychologist which can prescribe medication. I don't know how it works in U.S. but here they just ask you at the start of the session what your thoughts are on medication and they tend to be more happy if you refuse it. It's more sessions for them anyway in the long run.
ciokan··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
You can visit a psychiatrist because all others will dismiss you.
ciokan··on Developer Anxiety, we’re not alone
Had a few panic attacks 2 years ago in the summer. I was working too much (I still do) as an entrepreneur, drinking too much coffee without drinking enough water (coffee tends to dehydrate your body) and my blood too thick from that so it came to me as a sort of dizziness which transformed into a full blown panic attack and an ambulance shortly after that.

I refused pills from day one and found that, by training my mind to say "bring it on! is this the best you can do" tends to stop the anxiety on it's ascension. I go to gym 3 times a week now to to some actual exercise and calm the body a bit. I now am panic free for almost 2 years but I still have the symptoms. What changed is my attitude when the symptoms arrive, it's already in my subconscious and my body does it automatically.

I blame our jobs just like OP and I blame the fact that our job is a whole brainstorm from start to finish. No physical challenge at all and our bodies are not used to it. Our bodies need some physical activity to do it's chemistry and release new stuff periodically so we can function properly otherwise some glands get messed up (this is my own conclusion I didn't hear it from anywhere) so our bodies get unbalanced and stressed. Too much of something is called an addiction and no addiction is left unpunished. We really need to take a break from time to time and just work out or meditate a bit for our body to adjust or at least recover.

No past generation was so technical and multi tasked and so stressed from morning till dawn. We're probably at the border of evolution right now and nature is adjusting us/itself. Future generations will probably deal with this entirely different than us but our bodies are like an old motherboard with a super chip plugged in right now. It's getting burnt. We need some better cooling.

The worst thing about panic attacks is that you have nobody to talk to that can really understand what you're going through apart from others who had it. You can't explain it to someone who didn't because you can even see them smiling..."so...basically you're afraid huh?". They can't comprehend the feeling that you're going to die, right now; that you're probably so certain you're going to die that you probably even said your last words and good byes in your mind. Just don't complain to people any more because you will get a new addiction out of it.

Tl;DR: Do sports (swimming is good), less work (you van find yourself even more productive because productivity has few to do with how much we work), confront your demon when he comes to visit and don't try to explain to people who never dealt with such a thing...they might make things worse.

ciokan··on I am a successful software dev but I have a serious drinking problem
My father died of alcoholism and whatever we said to him or do wouldn't change a thing in his mind. That's a very strong addiction and he didn't stop even when doctors told him he's in terminal phase. I believe the change has to come from inside of you and you must identify where it all started and what was it's trigger and treat that first.

I have nicotine issues but I stopped smoking in favor of e-cigs. Nicotine is not that bad, the cigs are killing you not nicotine itself.

I also find doing sport to change my mentality a lot. You start looking different, you value yourself more when your body changes and you won't want to go back. Give it a try. Good luck to you!

ciokan··on Flask API – Browsable Web APIs for Flask

ciokan··on Screwed by Square
Paypal does the same. Blocked mine with 30k in it for 6 months and destroyed my business with it. We had to sell stuff from our house to pay providers (~20k) to survive that month. We lost subscribers and our business recovered in almost 1.5 years out of that "High risk" ban.

To them "high-risk" often means "you put too many questions" or "we don't have time to actually support you properly". By simply banning you they get rid of businesses that require more attention instead of hiring more capable people. That list of capable people should grow along with the customers list but they stop at some point and that's when they can't deal with you.

It's good that stripe is not available in my country because I really wanted to pick them after Paypal nightmare. I think I would have killed myself at round 2 with this type of support and bans they throw at you when you need help.

ciokan··on Ask HN: Why is ExtJS not getting any traction?
I mostly use Extjs for admins and such. I would say that it offers little control over the design, structure and HTML compared to something like angular which allows full control over the presentation. Creativity room is important.

The licensing is pretty restrictive also and the prices are big.

I wouldn't say ext has no traction. I see sencha going pretty well and I've worked with extjs since the early days. It just looks more "business oriented"
