cincinnatus··on Popcorn Time – Watch torrent movies instantly
You shouldn't be doing anything, let alone torrenting, without a VPN these days.
cincinnatus··on An Open Source Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X
That is a start, but any interruption at any time can be disruptive, and email is a particular problem.

What would be handy in a tool like this is being able to set up what I described above; normally don't ever notify me, but allow me to turn on real-time notifications for particular people on demand, or other rules for knowing when it makes sense to interrupt.

"Real-time email notifications considered harmful"

Seriously, if your daily activities require actual thought, turn all that shit off. If you need to know when a critical email shows up from time to time or from specific people, find a tool that does that or wire one together yourself with IFTTT and a push notification service. Your flow will thank you.

cincinnatus··on Download Atom editor without an invite
During beta. It will be on other platforms soon. Chill.
cincinnatus··on Thieves Break Into Cars Using Mysterious 'Black Box'
The typical attack in the past involves two devices, one by the car and one by the key. But that attack only works on proximity fobs for obvious reasons.
cincinnatus··on When May I Shoot a Student?
You may be level headed and well adjusted by surely you've noticed the large number of people who are CCW proponents who are not? More importantly is this; when a gun is part of the equation there is now a non-zero chance someone is going to get shot.

The vast majority of the time the only gun in the vicinity is going to be that of the CCW. MOST people go through their entire lives without ever encountering a 'bad guy with a gun'. Ever.

People who CCW think they are bringing a gun to a gun fight, when maybe they are bringing a gun to a fist fight, or a stern conversation.

cincinnatus··on When May I Shoot a Student?
People who are pro ccw have a very cartoonish understanding of the world.
cincinnatus··on How pCell works and why its a bigger deal than anyone realizes
Or just piggyback an antenna into the hardware otherwise installed at each consumer location. There was a theory almost a decade ago that Google would do something like that on top of all the 'dark fiber' it was buying up at the time.
cincinnatus··on For 40 years, this Russian family was cut of from all human contact
Living the libertarian idyll.
cincinnatus··on Running .NET apps in Docker containers
It is abstraction layers all the way down. We all find our level of comfort in the stack, somewhere between the most abstract thing currently achievable and CPU microcode.

In this particular case it makes something otherwise tedious much simpler, which is what adding abstraction is always about.

cincinnatus··on What Happens When You Drop A Magnet Inside A Copper Tube [video]
And if you have little kids treat them like guns. Lock them up when you aren't around.
cincinnatus··on Screw your standing desk. How about squatting?
How about while reading? Or thinking? It's not like "using a computer" is a monolithic activity. Electric desk frames allow you to change position throughout the day. The latest one I got (3 segment legs from geek desk) can go so low I can sit lotus in front of it.
cincinnatus··on Screw your standing desk. How about squatting?
I think it was an accident of history in Europe. Something to do with the architecture of castles and ships perhaps.

It is a shame that much of Asia is losing the squat toilet over time. I've found it to be very helpful on occasion. It dramatically reduces apparent constipation.

cincinnatus··on “Superlens” may solve wireless charging dilemma
The whole push to wireless charging feels like a bad idea. We already are deeply in need of reductions in total global power use or at least efficiency improvements, and wireless charging wastes a huge amount of power. Unless they can figure out how to bring the efficiency in line with direct contact we're better off with clever direct contact without a plug schemes.
cincinnatus··on Obama Is Announcing His NSA Reforms Tomorrow - Use This Scorecard To Judge Them
The problems that led to this failure of the system are cultural not procedural. We already have the constitution and many laws and procedure that should have prevented what has been going on. What we have is a profound lack of understanding of how intelligence works and the limits of what can be done with it, intentionally or not.

You can't fix culture. You can only shut it down and start over. And that will not happen.

cincinnatus··on Tell HN: Server Status
I'm sure it has been asked many times before, but I'd love to hear the latest thinking... Why in 2013 is HN still running on bespoke hardware and software? If a startup came to you with this sort of legacy thinking you'd laugh them out of the room.
cincinnatus··on Amusing ourselves to death
I'm afraid most are only exposed to 1984 and then reassure themselves we dodged that bullet.
cincinnatus··on Under Seattle, a Big Object Blocks Bertha. What Is It?
The water table in Seattle is very high, about 4 feet in that area. So at the point of the blockage they are under 40 feet of water. Every ~33 feet of water is an extra atmosphere of pressure.
cincinnatus··on Scientist who faked data in his thesis will keep his Ph.D.
He's fast-tracked for management no doubt.
cincinnatus··on Wow, or from the When-Apple-Became-the-Borg Department
Who it is coming from makes it seem all the more whiny. And hyperbolic.
cincinnatus··on Why Apple Wants Its Software to Be Free
I suspect they will at some point in the next ~18 months.
cincinnatus··on The genius and folly of MongoDB
MySQL is richly deserving of ridicule as well. It's ubiquity is unfortunate.
cincinnatus··on Login And Pay With Amazon – Yesterday’s launch will change the face of retail
What is actually new here? Pay with Amazon has been around quite awhile.
cincinnatus··on OS X Mavericks GM Seed available to Developers
A thousand times, this.
cincinnatus··on Free Unix (1983)
By the time I was on dial up to a local unix mainframe it was 85 and I had an Amiga and a PC. I actually went and bought a second hand amber screen VT100 work-alike for $50 and started using it all the time because the terminal behavior was rock-solid compared to the emulators available, and the text was very easy on the eyes. Good times.
cincinnatus··on Newell's history of porting Doom to Windows to show it can be a gaming platform
Came here to say this. Gabe is welcome to his version of events but like all humans is suffering from selective memory syndrome. Alex St. John is the one who "made it happen" in my recollection, and I was pretty close to the action.
