ciferkey··on Introducing Rubinius X

To be relevant today, a programming language must provide simple yet powerful facilities for composition and collaboration. A language does not need general immutable state, purely pure functions, or complex type systems, no matter how inferred.
Is this a poke at Haskell?
ciferkey··on Stanford researchers to open source model they say has nailed sentiment analysis
I'm talking an NLP class this semester and its nice to finally be able to dig into material like this rather than giving it a light read through. Can't wait until the code drops!
ciferkey··on iPhone, meet Haskell
Correct. Both python and lisp (Lisping) already have interpreters available as well.
ciferkey··on Data from hundreds of sites shows 23% usage of adblock

In all seriousness that is a staggering growth rate. Though I don't see the majority of the population moving the AB. It would be interesting if you could objectively gauge what kind of users are prone to using tools like AB and then see how close we are to saturating that portion of the user base.

ciferkey··on Ask PG: Can we have collapsable comment threads?
DId you use a generator for this?
ciferkey··on Swarm casts humans as ants in the first Google Glass MMO game
Love the concept, but

Using GPS data collected by Glass, the game generates a record of each player's daily routine.
Scares me a bit. Do you have more details on it?
ciferkey··on John Carmack joins Oculus as CTO
When I was watching Carmack's talk from Quake Con this year all I could think was "how does this man have the time to do all of this?" The email today from Oculus both excited and worried me though. I really hope Carmack is given the chance to dedicate himself to the project. His tweet today was reassuring though: "My time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo. Busy busy busy!"
ciferkey··on Firefox 23 is available
The network monitor addition to the developer tools is a welcome change. Now I won't have to switch into chrome for that.
ciferkey··on Canonical adds a $625 and $675 UbuntuEdge reward level
Current Rift dev kit owner here, the device isn't really what you would expect. The screen connects to a box that then does either DVI or HDMI out as well as USB for the head tracking. This box also needs separate power from an outlet. So its not really ready for a mobile experience.

Additionally resolution just isn't there yet. They're currently testing better screens for the consumer version but its all a matter of what they can source (as with the dev kit they had to move from a 5in to 7in screen due to sourcing problems).

Finally, before I received mine I had thought about using it similarly to how you are. However I've come to realize that strapping a TV to you face changes up the interaction enough that you sometime have to rethink fundamental design concepts about the UI.

Random Rift tidbit: The people behind the [Minecrift](https://github.com/mabrowning/minecrift) are doing some awesome work and its development is a great example of people learning how to adapt a game to VR. Plus the ascetics of minecraft makes the pixelation of the Rift less noticeable.

ciferkey··on On PRISM, a response from Private Internet Access
> Finally, our organization has a contingency plan in place in the event the atmopshere toward internet privacy in the United States becomes less hospitable.

Keep up the good work guys. I only recently subscribed earlier in the year when you ran your $30 a year discount but I can see myself sticking with you for a while.

ciferkey··on Show HN: How I Used Machine Learning to Optimize My Trading Algorithm
The Keynes quote reminds me of LTCM (just finished reading When Genius Failed).
ciferkey··on Sputnik 2 is here: Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition goes 1080p
Getting closer to what I'd like (1080 resolution, SSD 128-512gb, No optical drive, Linux support for hardware, Thin profile, Quad-core, i7, Integrated graphics only, HDMI, USB3). The killer for me is it seems like there is no Non-glossy/anti-glare/matte screen option.
ciferkey··on Ask HN: Macbook Air + Remote Server = Macbook Pro?
You're line of work sounds very interesting. I'd love to hear more about it!
ciferkey··on 23andMe raises $50M, cuts price to $99, sets goal of 1M genotyped customers
Interesting! In the past if you made an account on their site and signed up for the new letter (but never actually bought a test), after a while they would send discount offers. The last one I received was $50 off, but the tota l cost was still over $200. No I have no excuse (cost wise) not to try it.
ciferkey··on Poll: Do you use an Adblocker?
Yes, I run it with Ghostery as well.
ciferkey··on ShowHN: I learned to code and got a job in less than a year. Here is my ebook.
In a very humorous series of events, while checking my RSS feeds I read [this](http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4843795) immediately before seeing this title.
ciferkey··on Show HN: I spent two years working on an HTML5 game. I finally released it

ciferkey··on Under the hood: Rebuilding Facebook for iOS
Hmm thats odd. I don't have an account and I have no trouble reading it.
ciferkey··on Ask HN: How Much Would You Pay for Google to be Ad Free?
Personally I have no incentive to pay since ABP removes them already...
