ciex··on Equihax
That's over. Now there will always be another cryptocurrency to take over money transfer for criminal activities.
ciex··on Most Female and Male Occupations Since 1950
I would love to see the first diagram with circles coloured according to average wage of the respective occupation. I would expect to see more high-income male occupations and vice versa – a correlation that explains most of the gender pay gap.
ciex··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
Ello didn't feel like a personal space for me. Its sleek design screams 'present yourself, show me what you've got'.
ciex··on LastPass: Security done wrong
So I just did this. Have to say that I really didn't feel comfortable with the unencrypted CSV data transfer. I made sure that time machine doesn't index it, but accessing this file in the time window needed to export/import seems like a prime attack vector to me.
ciex··on In Berlin, a Grass-Roots Fight Against Gentrification as Rents Soar
It's called Altbau and is usually combined with Blockrandbebauung, which the other commenter mentioned. I don't understand why this style hasn't seen a comeback yet.

Its most charming qualities are high ceilings (3-4 meters), historicist ornamentals / stucco, natural ventilation (Fugenlüftung), wooden flooring and boy-type windows. All of these increase quality of living substantially and I wouldn't want to live in any other kind of building if given the choice.

ciex··on Show HN: Rumuki, a prenup for sex tapes
I agree with you, not only because couples do indeed trust each other, but also because it may come off as mistrusting to ask your s.o. to use something like this.

However, I think there might be a market for this with casual hookups. In these situations, you may want to let someone access private videos/pictures, but don't trust them enough to just send it, especially if your face is included. Receivers might also be more inclined to pay. Additionally, while I think it would be acceptable in this situation to ask someone to install an app, the makers of this have to take extra care to ensure that this looks serious and doesn't come off as a scam.

ciex··on Why there is no Facebook killer: the death of the P2P dream (2014)
Isn't it also the case that web usage is much more wide-spread now than it was when Facebook became popular? It just feels off to cram all of your contacts into one platform (the dreaded will my granny see this post effect).

I think end-to-end encrypted social platforms could have a future if they are oriented towards a niche that sees advantages from the encryption and offers federated access for mobile devices in addition to full p2p connectivity.

ciex··on Show HN: Browse Reddit in a 3D graph visualisation [Haskell+Purescript]
Cone for Reddit is a 3D visualisation of the Reddit community. This project uses the hierarchical structure of Subreddits, threads, and comments to display them in the ConeCanvas widget and maps vote data as a heatmap on the tree's nodes. Content is provided by a selection of interesting Subreddits.

The app visualises the structure of discussions and could be expanded to extend it with other measures than votes. I think it would be interesting to showresults from sentiment analysis or similar using the heatmap. What do you think?

The left hand side of the screen shows a 3d tree view of selected Subreddits, threads and comments. It allows you to navigate and select nodes in the tree by using the arrow keys on the keyboard or by clicking on nodes. The right hand side shows content corresponding to the item selected on the left.

[I wrote a little more on our blog](http://symbolian.net/2016/06/28/cone-for-reddit/). Please ask questions, I will be here for some time.

ciex··on To Reduce VR Sickness, Add a Virtual Nose
Your real nose always covers some part of your visual field, still it doesn't bother you, because your brain removes certain stimuli that persist over a long period of time.
ciex··on Downloading All of Hacker News Posts and Comments
What were your results? What did you do it for?
ciex··on German officials confirm 18 million emails and passwords stolen
The article says the info was released on Thursday, so there's still Friday in between. Maybe someone at that big consumer software company wanted some time to prepare a defense? Maybe law enforcement wants to procure movement in some hacker groups they are tracking, by keeping them from knowing whether they've been busted? Maybe the BSI really doesn't know where the addresses are coming from? There are so many options here.
ciex··on Why Minds Are Not Like Computers (2009)
The fundamental difference between minds and computers, which many people don't understand, is that computers are modelling things. They are calculating outcomes from preconditions. Minds on the other hand, while they might also be doing that, are experiencing things. They feel, see and hear. You might make the argument that we don't know whether a computer is doing that as well, because it can't tell us - but then I could just as well propose that minds are like popcorn.
ciex··on Spritz – read 500 words per minute without any training
You don't want to break it in the sense that you stop doing it altogether. Just as lukev said, you would want to learn controlling it to your advantage - slowing down and speeding up depending on what you a reading.
ciex··on Off-the-Record Messaging Protocol v3
Doesn't this solution require trust in the server caching the pre-keys?
ciex··on How to Make a Complete Map of Every Thought you Think (2003)
This is an interesting thought about the disadvantages of software text editors:

"A long time ago, I stored all of my thoughts in a computer text file. It was actually an AWESOME system. The computer has so many advantages that the paper world doesn't. [...]

For all this awesomeness in the computer, you are unconsciously pulled into a problem:

ALL OF YOUR TEXT looks EXACTLY THE SAME.[...]

YES, YES! I CAN HEAR YOU COMPUTER-PEOPLE'S COMPLAINING. ``But you can use FONTS!'' But you can make it Bold! But you can make it Italics! yes! Yes! YES! I know it! You CAN do all those things.

But that doesn't make it FAST. In keeping notes, you don't want to constantly be dicking around with your UI. You want to be able to JUST WRITE.[...]

So, by contrasting with the computer, I have described the kinds of things you want to concentrate on in your notebook. USE DIAGRAMS EVERYWHERE. They are FAR better than coercive linear text. And USE VARIABLE WRITING STYLES. Write sloppy, write neat, and everything in between. It communicates to you. Use shorthand and abbreviation. Know Gregg's script? Use that when it suits you."

In general I feel that this whole text/book could use a lot of editing. It's intentional of course, as the author says himself he just spits out the text without going back. Still, at a length of >100 pages it is frustrating. Thank you anyway for posting, it is very inspiring!

ciex··on The Architecture of Open Source Applications
Which chapters stood out to you in particular?
ciex··on Hyperloop
How do you get out of there in case of fire? If the doors open like that I don't think it would work while inside the tube wouldn't it?
ciex··on Hyperloop
"The Hyperloop is sized to allow expansion as the network becomes increasingly popular. The capacity would be 840 passengers per hour which more than sufficient to transport all of the 6 million passengers traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco are as per year. In addition, this accounts for 70% of those travelers to use the Hyperloop during rush hour. The lower cost of traveling on Hyperloop is likely to result in increased demand, in which case the time between capsule departures could be significa ntly shortened."

ciex··on Not Constructive, a place for the discussions not allowed on Stack Overflow
Testing the waters, getting valuable feedback, starting a conversation. What's the point of working on such a project if nobody is interested?
ciex··on Prominent Scientists Sign Declaration that Animals have Conscious Awareness
No they are not. Omitting qualia disqualifies almost all existing models of consciousness. One of the only ones I know that attempt an explanation of this phenomenon may be Tononi's IIT [1], but it is of course criticised for being too broad a definition.

ciex··on Hackers vs. suits: Why nerds become leakers
Maybe you are prone to valueing the quantifiable and direct impact a hacker can make higher than the indirect and non-quantifiable impact of someone else. Just imagine the influence someone could have through a conversation with an influential politician at a dinner party. The aforementioned hacker might not have the rethorical abilities, broad academic background and social network to do this. Still, it could have finally had a much bigger impact on the environment. Of course such a conversation does not occur frequently, but I guess reducing Facebook's electricity usage by 1% doesn't either.
ciex··on Do bigger images mean improved conversion rates? Three case studies
Only testing specific examples is not enough. Without testing against a theory you gain little knowledge from these experiments. I would like to see reports of people testing their beliefs about how web design decisions affect user behaviour instead of finding out which design works better for a given site. Of course this is more time consuming but it will also yield more valuable insight.

Also I think it is important to include feedback from actual users in your test results. How did they feel using the different sites? What are the users feelings about your own concerns (invisible content below the fold, ridiculous big buttons, etc)?

Without these considerations you are just poking around the mud with a stick.

ciex··on Coding As A Substitute For Meditation?
Please keep in mind that the flavour of meditation you are describing is not the only one.

"[M]editation refers to a family of self-regulation practices that focus on training attention and awareness in order to bring mental processes under greater voluntary control and thereby foster general mental well-being and development and/or specific capacities such as calm, clarity, and concentration" Walsh & Shapiro (2006)

"[M]editation is used to describe practices that self-regulate the body and mind, thereby affecting mental events by engaging a specific attentional set.... regulation of attention is the central commonality across the many divergent methods" Cahn & Polich (2006)

The practice of 'coding in the zone' might as well achieve the same effect as traditional meditational practices and be called meditation on that ground. In fact, you are training the control of your attention with that practice.

ciex··on Draconian ‘Wi-Fi police' stalk Olympic Games
Has there been a discussion around this law in the UK? I don't really believe a democratic vote would have signed it off, so I wonder how it is possible to wave through such a thing with no public controversy. What do the people gain from a 'ban on chips'?
ciex··on Introducing Mozilla Persona, An Identity System for the Web
That's an interesting idea. How would you go about collecting all these emails first though?

Would you tell the user to "just enter all email addresses you ever registered" and then send confirmation emails to all of them? I'd imagine this ending with one or two confirmed email addresses and maybe 3 additional unconfirmed ones.

When the user then tries to use one of the unconfirmed addresses to sign in — what do you do? Refuse log in because the address is not confirmed? Send another confirmation email to that account and ask the user to confirm it? List those confirmed addresses in the account and ask the user if he wants to sign in with one of them?

ciex··on ICANN is wrong
Isn't the real issue here that it's just unnatural to use fixed combinations of letters to refer to websites? There is a reason that natural language is so hard to process for computers: It's inherently context-dependent and never has meaning per se. The domain name system on the other hand tries to impose a fixed naming system on us that is absolutely incomprehensible to anyone without technical knowledge.

The only solution to this mess I can see is a non-profit HTTPS server certificate verification authority in combination with a complete revamp of the user experience for browsing web ressources. I should be able to just search for the page I want to visit instead of having to remember its exact name.

ciex··on Body Hacking: Thoughts Regarding My Magnet Implant
The funny thing about these is that they don't really make you constantly aware of where north is. To answer that question you would have to concentrate on the vibration. What acutally happens is way cooler: You become subconsciously aware of the structure of the space surrounding you. This is something that everyone has to a leser extent i.e. you could point at the direction of various objects around you and tell me roughly how far away they are even without looking. When you have been wearing the belt for a few weeks you are able to do this even for objects that are not in you immediate vicinity. You get an actual feeling for the location of all kinds of things. Imagine having an accurate intuition for the location of your home town or the next highway exit! Another example: you could visit a city where you have never been before, wander around the streets without caring for where you go and then immediately find the shortest route back to where you started. And it would be about as hard for you as finding the way to the door of the room you're in right now.
ciex··on Toys
Just as modern toys prescribe a specific form of interaction, a specific game to be played science prescribes a specific causal relationship between the parts of the world. If toys or scientific theories describe a fixed link between 'what is' and 'what can happen' the opposite process fails. Kids are not able anymore to just invent a new meaning for the toy, a new way to play it just as we are not able to form spiritual belief-systems. And that's frustrating. That's why people say 'old toys were better, you could play with them how you wanted' or 'science is bunk, explaining everything down to the molecular level doesn't give me meaning in my life'. And that's why a new religion is needed which is built on science. Which gives explanations of the world that are not in direct conflict with scientific theories but also rooted in human imagination instead of observation. Which makes them meaningful. Also new toys.
ciex··on Paul Graham: Why Y Combinator Replaces The Traditional Corporation
The point is that a shipyard could also be run by a number of smaller companies, each doing part of the job, if only they can collaborate effectively. Capital and manpower can be divided between firms.
ciex··on Chrome 14 released
Is this really the Chrome implementation of a sidebar?

Looks to me more like a floating secondary window which continually tries to dock to the main Chrome frame.
