ciconia··on South Africa's one million invisible children without birth certificates
Zuid-Afrika, which means south Africa in Dutch. ZA remains the country's country code.
ciconia··on Abandoned land drives dangerous heat in Houston, study finds
I've been having this idea of designing a neighborhood where the proportions of natural and built-up areas are reversed. Instead of having a basically artificial setting where trees live in little holes in the sidewalk, the basic setting is natural soil and vegetation, and the buildings are situated between and under the trees.

This brings up a lot of other questions: what about water and sewage infrastructure, electrical and fiber? What about maintenance of the vegetation? But it seems to me like a really cool idea, maybe even within the setting of a single homestead, where the basic setting is a forest, with some buildings nested within it.

ciconia··on The pivot
Strictly speaking there's never been an energy transition in the sense of replacing one source of energy with another. Instead, the different sources of energy have been piling on top of each other. [1]

So while PV is growing at an unprecedented pace, it still represents only 2-3% of total energy production. About 75% still comes from fossil fuel. Today we burn more fossil fuels (and incidentally more wood) than ever before in human history. So the term "energy transition" is inaccurate at best.

ciconia··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
It's funny how there's such a pervasive cynicism about AI in the developer community, yet everyone is still excited about vibe coding. Strange times...
ciconia··on Why is Switzerland so rich?
> You also vote so often on public topics that it takes the sting out of politics.

The sort of direct democracy of Switzerland is something that is sorely lacking in all other western democracies. It's pretty clear that representative democracy doesn't work anymore (if it ever had).

ciconia··on America's future could hinge on whether AI slightly disappoints
I think if there's a rational reasoning behind Trump unleashing ICE and the national guard on the domestic population, this must be it: "the economy is doing really bad, and we need a smokescreen so people won't talk about it."
ciconia··on Ancient Patagonian hunter-gatherers took care of their injured and disabled
I'm somewhat surprised the comments here talk about the difference between "savages" and modern culture, yet no one talks about racism. It is clearly a western civilization thing to regard all other cultures (and species) as culturally and morally inferior. Hence the amazement expressed in the OP:

> Yes, there is some evidence suggesting that interpersonal care was practiced in earlier periods of Patagonia.

As if western civilization has invented interpersonal care.

ciconia··on Despite what's happening in the USA, renewables are winning globally
The US is today the biggest exporter of refined petrol products. It also consumes products manufactured elsewhere, including China.

China is in some ways the world's factory.

ciconia··on Without data centers, GDP growth was 0.1% in the first half of 2025
Very cheap cloud hosting coming soon to a data center near you...
ciconia··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
This is spot on. This has been a recurring practice of the Israeli regime - to take advantage of a terrorist attack or some other pretext in order to take over additional territory and remove the local population. This modus operandi has been practiced since right after the partition resolution at the end of 1947 to conquer Palestinian villages, remove their inhabitants and rase the houses to the ground, and is still practiced today in the occupied territories and Gaza. Like you said, Israel's recent military campaigns in Lebanon and Syria are also examples of the same strategy.
ciconia··on Io_uring is not an event system (2021)
There are no callbacks in io_uring. You submit an operation (SQE), the kernel runs your request while you're doing other stuff, eventually you get back a completion entry (CQE) with the results of the operation.
ciconia··on Io_uring is not an event system (2021)
It's not an event system in the sense that it's not just a way to get notified when a file descriptor is ready for reading or writing. Like the OP says, it is a way to run syscalls asynchronously.
ciconia··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
All parties except for the Arabs and ultra religious are Zionist. The ultra religious have their own relationship with Zionism, but are members of the government.

While Arab MKs do enjoy freedom of speech, they are ostracized and delegitimized by the majority of Jewish MKs.

ciconia··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
The division is not about the starvation of Gaza. All Zionist parties in the Israeli parliament support the military campaign in Gaza. Apart from some lip-service from left-wing leaders, to my knowledge no Jewish leader has spoken against the starvation. Israeli media (except for Haaretz) have largely denied that there is a famine, and have called it a "propaganda campaign" by the Hamas.
ciconia··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
The man speaking is Ayman Odeh [1], an Arab Israeli MK and chairman of Hadash, a left-wing Arab Israeli party. Arab Israelis and their political leaders are marginalized in Israeli society. Arab Israeli parties are largely considered illegitimate by a majority of Jewish Israelis.

Political opposition to the starvation of Gaza is still marginal, especially in Jewish society. Protests in Arab cities against the starvation and the genocide are being curbed and prevented by the police. the Jewish majority is still largely silent on these issues, if not outright supportive of the government policy.

Right, I guess you'd call this "humanitarian terrorism". Put it right along the "media terrorism" of the Gaza "famine media campaign", or the "diplomatic terrorism" of South Africa engaging the ICC. I guess the whole world is just full of Nazi antisemite proxies of the Hamas and Iran. Go Israel! /s

ciconia··on Top UN legal investigators conclude Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza
I couldn't find any info on intimidation of HR council members. Nevertheless there were reports of the Israeli Mossad chief intimidating the ICC chief prosecutor at the time Fatou Bensouda. [1]

Her successor Karim Khan has also reported threats were made. He was later implicated in a sex scandal [2]. It would not surprise me if this was a Mossad sting operation.

Edit: as the sibling comment states, the Americans have put in place sanctions against members of the HR council, along members of the ICC.

The commission chair Navi Pillay has said this report is to be sent to the international criminal court as well as to national courts [1].

ciconia··on US lawmakers introduce bill to strip citizens of passports over Israel criticism
This is one of many signs that manufacturing of consent doesn't work anymore. In the absence of such acquiescence from the people, western governments are resorting more and more to active and violent repression of voices outside the allowed "mainstream consensus".

First they did it to foreign nationals, now they're turning the same weapons against their own citizens.

ciconia··on EU court rules nuclear energy is clean energy
Exactly. What is needed is a SpaceX-like enterprise, where the engineering effort is concentrated in building economies of scale. To me it's clear that nuclear energy's pros largely outweigh the cons, and that it is a perfect complement to solar and wind power generation.
ciconia··on Seoul says US must fix its visa system if it wants Korea's investments
This is just American imperialism brought home, and it's already being targeted at American citizens themselves. Now you're starting to get a taste of how people in many countries feel about the US.
ciconia··on New Mexico is first state in US to offer universal child care
Chances are you'll soon see something like "Trump threatens nuclear war against communist New Mexico".
ciconia··on Environmental Regulations Are Baking Europeans to Death
AC doesn't make heat disappear. It just displaces it, removing it from the interior and effectively warming the exterior (plus heat emitted by the AC mechanism itself). So AC can't solve global warming, it actually heats the exterior, making global warming worse. Just saying...
ciconia··on AP reporting calls into question why and how Israel attacked a Gaza hospital
> Associated Press reporting into an Israeli attack on a Gaza Strip hospital that killed 22 people, including five journalists, raises serious questions about Israel’s rationale for the strikes and the way they were carried out.

This assumes that Israel is acting rationally. It doesn't, there's nothing rational about this.

ciconia··on The Costs of Living Alone
> These efficiencies are an inherent feature of sharing costs with other people, but the barriers to living alone, for those who want to, would be much lower if housing (and health care, and education) weren’t so expensive.

One can argue that higher rates of divorce or singles raises prices for everybody, couples included. I think it is totally reasonable for governments to give benefits to couples and to "tax" people who live alone, in order to lower housing prices.

ciconia··on SQL needed structure
This is a problem that ActiveRecord-style ORM's have failed to solve. One possible solution is writing queries like in the article that transform normalized data from the DB into a JSON structure. Another possibility is to design an ORM that is actually capable of taking a set of relations and dynamically building queries with joins, then transforming the returned rows into tree like structures.

This is a very interesting area for exploring a new kind of ORM. I find the whole "CRUD monkey" shtick preached by DHH et al quite lacking for expressing the kind of hierarchical data structures developers need.
