ciaranm··on Cellphone Spy Tools Have Flooded Local Police Departments
From an outsider's perspective, nowhere comes close to the US for gun (and by extension, miltary/police) fetish.

Wikipedia seems to back up my first thought: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_number_of_guns_per_c...

ciaranm··on Football, fire and ice: the inside story of Iceland’s remarkable rise (2016)
FWIW, the Guardian regularly publishes drafts of articles on it's website, and then makes changes and corrections to the articles.

I regularly see Top Photos, Headlines, Captions and even whole paragraphs appear and disappear after a few hours.

ciaranm··on New Macbook Pro power efficiency and time remaining
Have you updated the OS? I found battery to be a problem on my 15" until 10.12.3, wherein it's much improved.
ciaranm··on New Macbook Pro power efficiency and time remaining
I cycle with my MBP on my back every day. I also develop backend apps using VMs and need processing power. I bought the 15" MBP because this time around it was light enough for me. A year ago I would have got the 13", and been sad that I didn't have a bigger screen or faster machine.

Make of that what you will, but we exist.

ciaranm··on Snap commits $2B over 5 years for Google Cloud infrastructure
But ensuring 5 years of guaranteed service at a fixed price is reducing their risk. It prevents Google from pulling the rug out from under them, or from the price going up and they have no option but to accept it.

I imagine part of their plans are to move away from the dependency, but while it exists - this is exactly how you reduce your exposure to that risk.

ciaranm··on The woes of Windows 10
I really, really like Windows 10. I spend most of my work days in OS X on a Macbook Pro - but I also spend a lot of my free time gaming. Windows 10 is so much more user-friendly than any other OS I use. Settings are easy to find, generally easy to understand and change. Search is great. It boots super fast. It's about to get a 'game-mode' to restrict resources from background apps. Installing stuff from the Windows store has slow download speeds (compared to steam, apple) - but I have much fewer 'app is stuck in update' issues compared to OS X.

I'm super happy with it.

ciaranm··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
Yes, this is mostly my experience as well. I had a delivery truck driver get out and start yelling abuse because I banged on the back of his vehicle to alert him that he nearly knocked a woman off her bike a couple days ago.

This isn't rare, either - there's at least 1 shouted interacted per week.

It's no wonder my friends are afraid to get on the roads/their bikes.

ciaranm··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
I make a point of banging on any vehicle that's nearly hit someone and not noticed/acknowledged it - regardless of whether it was me they nearly hit or not.

People get mad (especially people driving vans/small trucks), but it's disgraceful that people are driving multi-tonne vehicles and are completely oblivious to their surroundings.

I'm glad your daughter is ok.

ciaranm··on Iranian MIT student goes home over break, denied return for spring semester
I find this comment utterly disgusting, and entirely reprehensible.

You should be ashamed. Imagine being unable to go to work after a short vacation - because someone didn't like where you were born, and in the meantime, on a whim, decided not to let you go.

For absolute shame.

ciaranm··on Netflix Earnings Are Driven by Investment in Original Content
Apparently there's a logo that has to be run before & after the show - but only if the show is made in the UK - https://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio-and-on-demand/advice-for-c...
ciaranm··on Show HN: Fluor a macOS app to switch Fn keys depending on active application
Try BetterTouchTool[https://www.boastr.net/]. I'm using it to customise my TouchBar for each app I use, and it's great. Touchbar version is an alpha - but I've found it mostly stable.
ciaranm··on [dead]
I feel like a world where people who have addictions are treated rather than criminalized can exist.

Debt isn't a problem in itself, but I don't feel like there's enough support for people who find themselves in rough financial situations. Dealing with money and debt isn't that hard, but you need to understand it and I think there's loads of people that don't.

ciaranm··on [dead]
Maybe dealing with the root issues that cause homelessness (mental illness, debt, drugs, etc) should be more important than whether well-off people 'feel' safe? People being dirty and homeless doesn't make them automatically dangerous.
ciaranm··on UK Government is breaking the law by collecting everyone's internet data
Ah, my apologies - I misread the parent comment.
ciaranm··on UK Government is breaking the law by collecting everyone's internet data
I don't think the cabinet is allowed to vote against the govt.
ciaranm··on How Skype fixes security vulnerabilities
Yeah, they're definitely targeting that market initially - but I'm seeing communities outside that sphere start using it: https://facebook.github.io/react/blog/2015/10/19/reactiflux-...

It's not perfect, but if you're looking for voice, group voice, and group text chat, it's a great solution. Very, very simple setup, little overhead.

It is missing Video and Screen sharing, though.

ciaranm··on How Skype fixes security vulnerabilities
Discord does most of this.

I've entirely moved to using it for voice comms with people where I'm suggesting the platform. It's guest support is pretty robust, so just fire someone a link and they can dial in from their browser if they don't have the app. Call quality is better than Skype, there's separate persistent chat rooms too. I like it a lot.

ciaranm··on A World of Surveillance Doesn’t Always Help to Catch a Thief
Lots of CCTV isn't government-run. Some is, like local parks or whatever, but most is run by businesses who want to be able to catch folks who have broken in. In order to get access to the footage, police generally need a warrant.

I guess I disagree that "camera == authoritarian", but I totally get your concerns. I'd be more worried about the secret courts(US) and super-injunctions(England) that mean we can't talk about things, than I would about being on camera.

ciaranm··on A World of Surveillance Doesn’t Always Help to Catch a Thief
I agree with the parent r.e. safety concerns though. It's a cheap, easy way to provide a relatively sure record of truth for public spaces. It helps prosecute people who enact violent or other crimes, and reduces the number of those in the first place.

Do you disagree with that, or value being invisible in public higher?

ciaranm··on One Way to Improve Your Coding
I can add my anec-data: I find it really hard to read white text on any dark background, black being obviously the worst.

I also find pure white with pure black really straining on my eyes. I hate the trails of lines I get reading bright text on dark backgrounds, or with really high-contrast colours generally.

Like the parent(or grandparent?), I've edited CSS for web pages. I've got a chrome extension called change colors installed, which has shortcuts for override-colours-by-domain and on-this-page-only. Really handy.

ciaranm··on Voice Is the Next Big Platform, and Alexa Will Own It
For whatever it's worth, Siri is much, _much_ better at understanding my accent (Scottish, but mild) than Alexa is. We've got an echo at home, and I find it painful to get her to do pretty much anything other than ask for tube status updates. The TV manages to set her off every few hours, though.

Doesn't feel like Amazon have much of an advantage to me.

ciaranm··on Ask HN: How do I get freelance developer jobs?
Just want to clarify a point - you don't have to employ the person who stands in for you, you just need to be contractually allowed to do so. Otherwise, your client is paying for _you_, not the service you're providing (e.g. [technology] developer).

Generally it's just a matter of how the contract is worded. You need to reserve the sort of rights a business would reserve.

ciaranm··on Git Cheat Sheet
What? I'd stash the changes I'm working on for the new feature, cut a fresh branch from whatever trunk/master/develop we're using, fix bug, checkout my other branch again, stash pop/apply, and we're back to where we were 10 minutes ago (or 5 days, if that's how long the bug-fix took).

Branches are cheap. Stash is cheap. Use them.

ciaranm··on Windows update knocks out internet connections
Ah, I think I had this the other day. I booted my PC, it updated, when I logged in I had no connection to the internet (ethernet). Was confused but my MBP and phone had working connections so I just rebooted. Worked fine after that.
ciaranm··on AirPods are now available
I'm guessing they want you to use the watch for this. It has at least a gig set aside for music etc.
ciaranm··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Nutmeg might be worth looking at. I've used it for my pension pot since I left my perm job and went contracting/freelance.
ciaranm··on What’s Lurking in Your Showerhead
Can we stop with the 'everyone in Europe' thing? It's almost never true. I live in rented accommodation in London and have the same style of shower heads as in the article.

Here's a fairly prominent seller of bathroom stuff in the UK, with a wide variety of different shower fittings: http://www.bathstore.com/products/showers/shower-fittings/sh...

ciaranm··on Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
Sometimes it was just adding a cover page - that's fine.

Other time they'd edit my contact info out, change wording, stuff like that. I'm not happy with edits being made without my approval, so I stopped giving them an editable format.

I never saw anything super egregious like lying about skills - but that's not to say it never happened.

ciaranm··on Show HN: CakeResume – Drag and drop resume snippets to build a unique resume
I don't give recruiters a word-formatted CV. Too many times I've had my CV edited from what I gave them before forwarding it on. It got to the point where I had to start asking companies I interviewed at for a copy of what the recruitment agencies had sent to them.
ciaranm··on Nielsen estimates ESPN lost 555,000 subscribers during the last month
I cancelled my NHL.tv subscription because they subjected me to team/region blackouts despite _literally living in another continent_. Was a total waste of money - it could have been great.
