ciabattabread··on Show HN: Trains.fyi – a live map of passenger trains in the US and Canada
The NJ Transit website/app looks ramshackle compared to the MTA.
ciabattabread··on Dbrand Is Suing Casetify
Anybody know which court this was filed in and the actual filing?
ciabattabread··on Spotify will end service in Uruguay due to bill requiring fair pay for artists
Wasn’t Tidal owned by Sprint? (And apparently it’s now owned by Jack Dorsey.) Isn’t that like supporting Zune for being an “underdog”, despite it being owned by Microsoft?
ciabattabread··on Kyle Vogt resigns from Cruise
So I’m assuming the review from the external law firm is complete?
ciabattabread··on [dead]
This is either a miscaptioned photo for comedic effect, or these people have lost their minds.
ciabattabread··on Sweden plans new nuclear reactors by 2035, will share costs
They’re the US Navy. You wanna have a civilian ship powered by a nuclear reactor sailing past Somalia? Or pull an Exxon Valdez?
ciabattabread··on David Attenborough is now narrating my life
> The alternative he used was a “sound alike” voice actor, for which Morgan Freeman received royalties to the tune of $$$$$.

Was it Josh Robert Thompson, who is officially authorized? [1]

ciabattabread··on Why banks are suddenly closing down customer accounts
At minimum, there needs to be a law that requires banks to identify to the customer the specific transactions that led to the closing of the account. And if there’s no prosecution related to these transactions after a year, the ban gets lifted.
ciabattabread··on GM's Cruise alleged to rely on human operators to achieve "autonomous" driving
Cruise is trying to save itself from getting shut down by GM. I guess it would look slightly better for optics if the GM board hired them instead of Cruise’s board. But it’s the same money, and it’s GM’s decision at the end.
ciabattabread··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
But are any of those countries fun? Russia ain’t exactly fun. China?
ciabattabread··on Shopify files lawsuit over DMCA abuse
> Sometimes I wish someone would DMCA a bunch of congressional campaign ads, because if pols realized how one-sided and ripe for abuse the system is they might actually fix it.

By giving themselves an exemption, like the anti-telemarketer laws.

ciabattabread··on Microsoft SEC 8-K: IRS is seeking an additional tax payment of $29B
Is this an issue unique to Microsoft, or did other similar companies receive the same type of notice?
ciabattabread··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
I use VeraCrypt on Windows to store my bank statements and other financial records, but recently, I’ve started moving my files over to the Mac ecosystem. Considering my Mac comes with SSD encryption, is it really necessary for me to continue using VeraCrypt?
ciabattabread··on Brightline Orlando's first train: 125 mph from MCO to MIA [video]
The next phase of the train is to the Orlando Convention Center / Universal Studios, then to Disney World, and eventually to Tampa.
ciabattabread··on Google sued for negligence after man died following map directions
Or maybe it was the coverage from multiple news organizations.
ciabattabread··on Car allergic to vanilla ice cream (2000)
Ah, so that's why there were always nitrogen tanks on NYC sidewalks.
ciabattabread··on Apocalypse Proof: 33 Thomas Street in New York City
You’re talking about buildings that hide subway ventilation shafts and power substations[1]. People would rather live next to creepy than ugly.

ciabattabread··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
> The bad news is, any criticism of these particular billionaires results in synthesized media campaigns crying wolf about anti-Semitism or anti-science

Who’s the billionaire you have in mind? Also remember that he also has his own self-interests and will toss you under the bus if it furthers his interests, too.

ciabattabread··on Boom's supersonic jet moves toward debut flight
The advertising Boom is doing with United claims they will be able to fly SFO-NRT and LAX-SYD [1]. But the Great Circle Mapper says SFO-NRT is 4453nm, and LAX-SYD is 6507nm.

The maximum range of the Boom Overture is 4250nm [2].

So is there going to be enough NYC-Europe supersonic demand for to make a Boom Overture 2.0 viable? The current state of transatlantic flights is pretty good with lie-flat seats and fast Wi-Fi.

ciabattabread··on The Mystery of the Bloomfield Bridge
What if the ADA was instead called the “Baby Stroller Accessibility Act”? Or the “Elderly Accessibility Act”?

Or do you want to slap on a remote-controlled exoskeleton on a toddler?

ciabattabread··on Police Seized Innocent Peoples Property, Kept It for Years. What Will SCOTUS Do?
So are you advocating for not voting? Exclusively using Tor and ProtonMail? Mass civil disobedience? Overthrow of government?

Or becoming a lawyer and filing suit against police departments and other government agencies? Or financially supporting those lawyers?

ciabattabread··on Why Is .US Being Used to Phish So Many of Us?
New York City, a municipal government, used to have its website at www.ci.nyc.ny.us, now it’s at nyc.gov. But NYC still has a bunch of active websites hosted at *.nyc.ny.us.
ciabattabread··on Giving up the iPad-only travel dream
Like a vacation trip? What are you doing that requires access to a laptop?
ciabattabread··on OpenAI now tries to hide that ChatGPT was trained on copyrighted books
AI-generated images were re-creating the Getty Images watermark (a transparent grey rectangle).
ciabattabread··on Mexico’s underground vanilla economy
The paranoid arrogance of HN commenters! Now go buy some bitcoin.
ciabattabread··on Judge sends Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over witness tampering
Come back when this thread has 1000 comments and the "more" link after the first thread.
ciabattabread··on Apple's soldered-in SSDs are engineered in the WORST way possible [video]
Why are you helping them? It’s their fault for being cheapasses while using an expensive phone. It’s like a BMW owner complaining about the price of premium gas.
ciabattabread··on Apple's soldered-in SSDs are engineered in the WORST way possible [video]
> I tell all my Apple friends to name something their $1000 iPhone does that my $200 Motorola can't.

You do this all the time?

> I can name several simple, practical, useful things an iPhone can't do --- not because Apple can't do it but because they don't want to.

Name them. We have plenty of electrons.

> I made the mistake of showing an Applehead how I could use a Windows PC to archive photos from an iPhone to a memory card and free up space.

Were they using iCloud Photos? Did they want to same physical space on the phone (could’ve used “Optimize iPhone Storage” in Photo settings), or did they want to not pay for additional iCloud storage?

ciabattabread··on Visa-free travel to Europe for U.S. citizens to end in 2024,requiring ETIAS form
You mean a COVID proof-of-vaccination?
ciabattabread··on IMAX emulates PalmPilot software to power Oppenheimer’s 70 mm release
I'm glad Apple implemented dark mode so I don't have to keep on hearing about that complaint in every Apple discussion.
