chupchap··on When did Google get so weird?
Google did crazy things to reduce the cost of delivering search results and now they have shifted to AI overviews which definitely is a costlier way to present results. What does this mean for the company in the long term?
chupchap··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
OMG what a blast from the past. We were taught FoxPro in school in 2002 for some reason. Not even Visual FoxPro, the old school DOS version. It taught me a lot about scripting and I remember helping out a medical rep who had built a FoxPro app to manage his business while in college.
chupchap··on Charts built for Chat
Okay nice chart, but can I click in and filter into the data? Visualisations are not what a BI tool does; it's just the tip of the iceberg.
chupchap··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
My cat refused to use the automated one.
chupchap··on Which tools do Claude, Codex and Cursor choose? We measured 17k runs to find out
The actual reason was when they pushed Google+ and tried to make that the centre of Google. Everything else that had a social element had to be killed. Anything that breathed the same oxygen as plus got the boot.
chupchap··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
So they turned a couple of millisecond operation to a 30 second operation?
chupchap··on Stripe acquires Clerky
I think Stripe is looking at companies using their services and identifying companies to acquire. This reminds me of Facebook looking at data from pixel data to identify apps with heavy usage they could acquire.
chupchap··on Copyright does not protect AI-generated content in EU
Microsoft is using AI generated code in their OS, so does that mean they lose copyright protection in Europe?
chupchap··on The Microsoft Rebrand Registry
This reminds me of https://renameforce.com/ which tracks all the name changes for salesforce products
chupchap··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Okay that makes sense
chupchap··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
Do you ask for height as a manual input?
chupchap··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
Why do you buy used books? You sound like the person who would prefer new books.
chupchap··on Businesses with ugly AI menu redesigns
Restaurants used to have stock images everywhere from menus, to flyers, and posters. I don't remember much talk about it to the extent we have with AI generated images. I prefer to judge restaurants on the quality and taste of food, unless they're charging me a fine-dining rate for it.
chupchap··on The infinite scroll may become endangered if controversial Calif. law passes
It was a good UX in FriendFeed as it was still a chronological feed. However once it was mixed with algorithmic feed it shifted from better UX to keep em' hooked.
chupchap··on Resetting Xbox
As an occasional gamer I hate modern big budget games as it takes me 15minutes to get gaming between launcher, updates, loaders and other distractions. It then takes me another 15minutes to get back to speed on which mission I was working on. By then I have 30 minutes left to game. Due to this, I frequently pick up older snackable games and skip AAA games altogether.
chupchap··on Building a custom octocopter from scratch with no prior hardware experience
This person made it from scratch with no prior experience, so the bragging rights are well earned.
chupchap··on Om Malik has died
I used to be tech-journalist in an earlier avatar and Om was someone who I always turned to for inspiration and context. I learnt a lot from the way he wrote, thought and perceived the world of technology. Om shanti, I wish you a great new beginning.
chupchap··on 'Ghost jobs' could soon be illegal in New York
Does this also cover all other employment agencies creating listing for the same one job, making it look like there are 20 openings while there is just one?
chupchap··on What even is food authenticity? Why we guard carbonara, and flatten chicken rice
Most loud voices get obsessed with a specific definition of a dish and I think for the sake of creativity we should/would shift to using creative names to accommodate preferences.
chupchap··on AI is slowing down
People who use ChatGPT have fed so much data about their own lives and interests into it. This includes a lot of information about personal lives, interests, plans, business and even family! Shifting to another AI app is painful as they would need to start from scratch.
chupchap··on Federal judge blocks H1B visa $100K fee
All of them have US subsidiaries and Cognizant is an US listed company.
chupchap··on EU-banned pesticides found in rice, tea and spices
In Australia, tea and spices are imported predominantly from Asian countries.
chupchap··on My Students Can't Read
Ai was trained on news and journal articles and this is the reason we see so many em-dashes as well. The side effect is that good writing is now classified as AI generated, which makes it bad writing. What a messed up world we live in
chupchap··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
No, I was just checking it out on Google Fonts and I could not see a way to change the colours of the sub-pixels which is affecting the readability.
chupchap··on Private equity bought America's essential services
> ban interest-based loans to private individuals

LOL, read up on how baking and loans in Islamic countries work. Banks buy whatever you want and then sell it to you partially at a higher rate. The customer then pays a rent for the portion owned by the bank till the principle is paid off. No interest charged technically, but effectively they do pay; except it is now kosher/halal. We humans use language to work around every such restriction by debating on the literal meaning of any such religious restrction.

chupchap··on All of human cooking compressed into 2 megabytes
There is such a large discrepancy in the number of recipes in the training data for South Asia vs other macro regions. I wonder what that impact that has on the study. I also wonder why there aren't mor recipes available for this region with such a deep culinary tradition.
chupchap··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
Coral Pixels is pretty nice with a lighter background, but unreadable with a dark one.
chupchap··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I was wading through water with a 3310 in my pocket in 2006. Battery was fine and it worked after it was dried. There was a problem with the keyboard though but that was a cheap swap. And this was a phone without any water resistance.
chupchap··on Bring Back Idiomatic Design
Good point, I think in case of Figma the idiomatic design was set by Sketch and other UI design apps, which in itself was a step away from the idiomatic design established by Photoshop.
chupchap··on What does it mean to “write like you talk”?
I cannot agree with this after reading transcripts of Trump's speeches. It does make sense in some scenarios, but writing like one speaks only works for people who speak clearly and effectively; unfortunately most people are terrible communicators.
