chunkles··on Michael Abrash doubled Quake framerste
The mods must have changed the title because I submitted it with the title "How Michael Abrash doubled Quakes framerate" matching the actual article title.
chunkles··on Fabrice Bellard Releases MicroQuickJS
Timing really is everything for making the frontpage, I posted this last night and it got no traction.
chunkles··on Eternal Struggle
If you tap on the ying-yang it starts.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Is there a way to get uBlock Origin on Chrome >= 138?
No. But there is a new version which works essentially as well. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin-lite/...
chunkles··on Ask HN: What are your favourite session replay tools?
The one used by Tomorrow Corporation for their game engine. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=72y2EC5fkcE&pp=0gcJCfwAo7VqN5t...
chunkles··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Is this project online anywhere yet that I can watch for it to be ready?
chunkles··on Ask HN: What are your peronsal data backup and sync setups?
syncthing from desktop and mobile to homelab. rsync from homelab to raspberry pi with a direct attached storage device at my parents.
chunkles··on Ask HN: What search engine are you using that is not Google?
Kagi. I've found it to actually surface what I'm looking for. It also allows you to block/promote/demote sites in your results.
chunkles··on One Million Chessboards
Individuals here on hacker news tend to gravitate towards blog posts about games rather than links to actual games, generally. Not a hard fast rule, but it's what I've observed over the years.
chunkles··on Ask HN: How do you find and consume content online?
Hacker News or lobste.rs is my primary site for new content. But I've added blogs I've found particularly well written or informative to my feed reader (currently commafeed, formerly freshrss).

If you're looking for a way to browse the "independent" web there are a few projects out there like Kagi Small Web which curate sites for you. https://blog.kagi.com/small-web

chunkles··on Ask HN: Rent a VPS or buy an old desktop for hosting side projects?
Buying and maintaining your own equipment is a good learning experience in itself. But universities generally don't like it when you host things on their networks, so that should be considered as well.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Where should I look to get a domain?
+2 Porkbun
chunkles··on Mechatronics
My degree as well!
chunkles··on Ask HN: Using a Projector for Programming?
If you're looking to reduce eye strain and you want to consider this approach you will want to make sure that you budget for a projector screen. Even a white or off-white wall will give a bad image quality and probably increase eye strain.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Tech to build a self-contained appliance that lasts 20 years
The satellite industry uses hardware equipment that has been around for a long so that all known issues are worked out and they can have an idea of lifespan because cost of replacement is astronomical. There are a few places online that talk about the processors and boards used in that industry. Might be an interesting place to start.
chunkles··on Ask HN: What are you doing with your Raspberry?
Running a backup instance of pihole. I have my primary instance on my "server" and run a secondary instance on the pi so I can point my DNS at two separate devices so downtime on one doesn't drop my internet.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Would casual gamers accept scores that decrease every week?
There is entirely not enough context to this question to provide a good answer.
chunkles··on Ask HN: My Toddler Micturated on My PC, How Do I Save It?
Isopropyl alcohol, as high a concentration as you can find. Before reassembly make sure the alcohol is fully evaporated. For the power supply if it doesnt stink after you clean the outside off and doesnt short out if you turn it on, do you really need to clean the interior?
chunkles··on CMU CS Academy: a free online computer science curriculum by Carnegie Mellon
One reason may be that mechanical engineering degrees really only mean something when they come from accredited universities, if you want to go for your FE or PE licenses in the USA you'll need to have a degree from an accredited university. Most places that consider you for a job as a mechanical, electrical, civil, aeronautical/aerospace, etc engineer only want to see you with a degree that's accredited. The CS job market has always been more accepting to self taught, hence courses to self teach. I say these things working in software development with a bachelor's and master's in mechanical engineering. Good friends with someone with a bachelor's and master's in electrical engineering working in software and brother-in-law to someone with an aerospace degree.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Help me re-find a small-scale water turbine design?
Scrolling through a listing of search results for "hydro -hydrogen" on algolia.

Micro hydro power with turgo generator https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31199586

Micro hydro plant (I don't think it's this one but I remember reading this and being impressed) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3576109

At around page 13 of the results we run out of hydro and it starts returning hydra.

chunkles··on Ask HN: What’s the best books and resources for UI/UX in 2023?
The Design of Everyday Things - Don Norman.

A well regarded classic in the field of UI/UX which establishes many important elements.

chunkles··on Ask HN: Projector Recommendations?
I don't have a particular recommendation, but make sure you also consider the projecting surface. Even an expensive projector will look bad if you shine it on a wall.
chunkles··on A collection of Soviet control rooms (2017)
I love the concept of a raspberry pi controlled smart home with this type of control panel.
chunkles··on Ask HN: Why is Prime Video so bad at keeping audio/video in sync?
Just to check. Since the error came from two different video sources in the exact same way. Is it an issue instead with your audio setup?
chunkles··on Ask HN: What email service should I use instead of Gmail?
Having seen people argue about this here before, my guess is you're going to get one of three recommendations. Zoho (https://zoho.com), Fastmail (https://fastmail.com, Proton (https://proton.me)

Sounds like you need to speak to the department head who works over your advisor if you're not getting the support you need. If you've been working 7 years on the same paper/model and they haven't approved it, it is at least partially your advisors fault for not giving you proper guidance throughout.

If your advisor is the department head, speak to someone in student services, or appeal to someone higher in the authority chain.

chunkles··on Ask HN: Why not use game design to motivate programming/CS/math in schools?
The issue with this thought is that not all students are motivated by the idea of designing games. Schools that have CS programs that focus on games already make developing a game a part of the curriculum.
chunkles··on AutoCAD is f-ing terrible. Let's talk about it
Use the extra command line option '/nologo' to remove the splash screen and speed up time to first action by a decent amount.
