chucknelson··on Facebook for Android and Why Zuckerberg now owns your ass
Agreed on the specific permission to read a text from a certain source. This "access to all SMS" sounds crazy - next step is let an app peruse my email inbox I guess? Even though I'm sure that isn't too far fetched with the latest news on email privacy.
chucknelson··on Half-Life 1 engine based games
> In Quake 1-3 I felt heavy/bulky...

Quake 2...maybe. Quake 3 is anything but heavy/bulky, that game is 100% twitch and your character flies around (sometimes literally with those jump pads) like they're constantly sliding on a slick floor. Great game.

chucknelson··on Apple's Cyclone Microarchitecture Detailed
Just seems like billion is the new million when acquisitions are concerned, but yes, I guess it wasn't that small overall. Did not realize PA Semi was founded by a lead designer at DEC. Thanks for the info, and Wikipedia filled in the rest for me :)
chucknelson··on Apple's Cyclone Microarchitecture Detailed
Pretty impressive that Apple is capable of such CPU disruption with just a few small acquisitions. Is PA Semi the main reason for this, or could Apple have been building up a CPU design team for years before that acquisition?
chucknelson··on Angular 2.0
Agreed - data-binding and "magic" automatic updates to the view when the model changes are key to what make Angular attractive. The focus on testing is nice too, though.
chucknelson··on Popcorn Time – Watch torrent movies instantly
> It shouldn't be my responsibility to try to get these movies legally

Ignoring that statement, which is a nice way to excuse your obvious criminal act(s), despite the correctness of the situation, paying these fees is fine when it's only a few, but the key is that we need centralized services to offer everything easily. If every content creator starts to have their own distribution method, get ready to complain about the "expensive" $10-15 fees you pay for 15 different services!

I'm waiting for the day when consolidation hits and we have 3-5 major streaming players that have almost everything available. Netflix's movie selection is just depressing...

chucknelson··on Direct3D to OpenGL abstraction layer
Still a pretty small number (2-8 max?) compared to all of the PC configurations you have to worry about in DX and OpenGL land.
chucknelson··on Stick bomb
I assume you're referencing this part of the video at 3:20? http://youtu.be/_GbYR5Aud4Y?t=3m20s
chucknelson··on Show HN: Learn Ruby by Example with Challenges
If you use Sublime Text it looks pretty familiar in the context of ruby code.
chucknelson··on Show HN: Learn Ruby by Example with Challenges
Ah, made me think of the good ol' days => http://rubyquiz.com/

Although this is definitely more tutorial-ish.

chucknelson··on The sorry state of Visual Studio syntax highlighting (2012)
I know, pointless comment, but some syntax highlighting issues hardly seem worth a "fuck you". Article title would be much better without that.
chucknelson··on Apple Explains How Secure iMessage Is
Well you can kind of say that about the entire internet. Possibly "Evil" and/or compromised companies control everything, right?
chucknelson··on Famous tech acquisitions’ cost per user
Overall I think there are a lot of factors, many that we the public are not privy to, that form the basis of these deals. All of this analysis and speculation is a form of entertainment. And that's fine I guess...
chucknelson··on Famous tech acquisitions’ cost per user
Agreed - how do we know the value difference for a "user" of Zappos and a user of whatsapp (among other dimensions)? This graph is not very insightful, it's just visualizing the easy way to look at and quantify the purchase.
chucknelson··on Only 30% of Americans Out of Comcast Reach After Deal
I think the "within reach" angle makes more sense here because there is often a lack of choice for most Americans when they look at who offers cable/internet in their area (e.g., only Cox, Comcast, Time Warner, etc.). I think this will get better as things like FiOS and uVerse expand (hopefully), but for right now many of us are "stuck" with a provider.
chucknelson··on Apple Removes Shadow DOM from Safari
Does anyone have any real info on this? I don't think we have enough context or details to really know what this means, do we?
chucknelson··on Google Passes Exxon to Become Second-Most Valuable U.S. Company
> how big a market is the thermostat market...

As has been expressed at various places on the web, the Nest acquisition was most likely about more than just thermostats and smoke detectors. It was probably about good consumer product design in general.

chucknelson··on “The working group should not agree to freeze whatever syntax Chrome ships”
Any "insiders" have comments on this? Is this the Chrome team just trying to keep pushing forward, or are they technically sticking to the referenced compatibility guidelines they published?

I'm just wondering if there has been a lack of progress with Shadow DOM and their solution is just go-go-go to get things moving.

chucknelson··on The Ocean is Broken (2013)
Same here - I was expecting to see at least a picture of the tsunami debris they mention.
chucknelson··on Zynga Lays Off 15% of Its Workforce
I think it's highly dependent on the firm. In my experience, some of the larger ones will tolerate people at 3-6 months (or more) of "bench" time. I would think it's because of the size and they can't babysit everyone, but automated reporting sure helps catch these instances (and mid-year or annual review time too).
chucknelson··on Office. Office never changes
Not sure how this made the front page of HN. Maybe someone can explain to me how this is important/impactful/insightful?
chucknelson··on PS4's LLVM-based Developer Toolchain [pdf]
Anyone else find it strange that these slides are filled with some pretty hardcore technical jargon, yet on one of the slides they feel the need to clarify "GDDR5 is very high end graphics memory only found on PC graphics cards"? :)
chucknelson··on Robinhood: $0 commission stock brokerage
Seems OK - but is anyone going to trust this? One idea is a low-amount "test" fund to keep around a year or so? Anyone have ideas on how to feel better about actually using this for larger sums of money?
chucknelson··on Dell Leaks Details of a 24” UHD 4K (3840x2160) Monitor
I'm left wondering how long until we have mainstream video cards capable of driving games at these resolutions? Seems like we're a ways off...
chucknelson··on Many PS4 units dead on arrival
Definitely reaching there - you can't assume a large majority of people who ordered from Amazon are leaving reviews. You already know that people without a working console will no doubt go leave a review, so the sample is significantly skewed.

We won't know if this is a real problem until Sony says something.

Disclosure: I ordered my PS4 from Amazon in June, received it yesterday, it works fine...and I have no reason to write a review about it.

chucknelson··on S.F. programmers build alternative to HealthCare.gov [video]
A little skeptical of this, as others are. How was this tested? Just because it seems to "work" with responsiveness and items on the screen does not mean the info is correct.

Not saying healthcare.gov is any better, but there is just no mention of the information given and/or calculations done being correct.

chucknelson··on The American Who Designed the PlayStation 4 and Remade Sony
Which also leads to crazy optimization against the stable hardware. Just look at what PS3 and Xbox 360 are pushing out with ~512 MB RAM and 7+ year old hardware. It's pretty incredible.
chucknelson··on The American Who Designed the PlayStation 4 and Remade Sony
Thanks for posting at least one pic of what launch games looked like last generation. I urge people to go look at some others on the web.

Anyone arguing that games don't look that much better than current gen need to remember how much progress we've made this generation, and then look at how good games like Killzone: Shadow Fall already run and look at launch.

chucknelson··on The American Who Designed the PlayStation 4 and Remade Sony
Neither PS4 or Xbox One are backwards compatible with their previous generation counterparts. Both of them went x86 this time around with no emulation layer or additional legacy hardware to maintain any sort of backwards compatibility.

A little bit of a bummer, but we'll all forget about it in a year or two :)

chucknelson··on The PC is not dead, we just don't need new ones
Well now you should just post some core specs so we can test your claim. Exact CPU, GPU, and RAM amount?
