> The Pyramid shows biased behaviors, growing in complexity from the bottom to the top. Although the behaviors at each level negatively impact individuals and groups, as one moves up the pyramid, the behaviors have more life-threatening consequences. Like a pyramid, the upper levels are supported by the lower levels. If people or institutions treat behaviors on the lower levels as being acceptable or “normal,” it results in the behaviors at the next level becoming more accepted. In response to the questions of the world community about where the hate of genocide comes from, the Pyramid of Hate demonstrates that the hate of genocide is built upon the acceptance of behaviors described in the lower levels of the pyramid.

The point being made was that this is really bad because it’s a step on the way to genocide.

That’s what DHH said I believe.

And it would be in the context of trying to get the employee fired who made it.

Also the other co-founder is Jewish. So having someone bring up something like that is probably insulting.

What percentage of Bay Area women comprise all women in the world? And what is your definition of most?

He is comparing Bay Area women to Eastern European women.

You are deliberately misquoting.

> thinks them inferior

To who? Eastern European woman. How is this sexist?

> known misogynist

Men find women physically attractive.

I would be interested to know what films, books, comedians you actually find permissible for yourself to enjoy.

If you take offense to what is written here, I really don’t see how most of the media available today can be suitable. Do you ever ask yourself if you are being consistent in your standards?

As usual, it’s taken out of context.

He is comparing Bay Area girls to a girl he was sleeping with whose family moved here from Russia when she was a teenager and who “had spent years backpacking through jobs in rougher parts of the world”.

This is the reference to “worldliness”.

Being raised in the Bay Area compared to the experience of a family descended from Russia is of course going to result in a different upbringing and personality.

I don’t think this is hard to argue with unless you are naive to history and have not spoken to those who lives through 20th century Eastern Europe.

Ironic, as the lack of “worldliness” that those refute, is the same quality that prevents them from appreciating the sentiment in the quote.

A lot of fashion is about bravery, as mentioned in the article.

People look on those who can wear what they want as free, because they know they are not, and that they are afraid of being judged.

I saw a guy wearing a kimono and a belt yesterday. Was quite a sight.

Typical judgmental thoughts of "look at that odd dude“ went through my head. But I realized that I couldn’t wear that and the reason would be other people judging me for it, or assigning questionable gender identity upon me.

When looking back to 18th century fashion it is extreme compared to the extremes that people are chasing today.

Everyone is trying to be different. Maybe wigs will come back.

Imagine a world without fashion judgement. What would you wear?

Cooking is enjoyable and you can get the same flow state cooking that you can coding. And it’s where you can let your mind wander and come up with sparks of new ideas/approaches.

Soylent is terrible for your insides.

Humans ate only meat for 2 million years.

How is the author overweight eating what he eats, and walking around outside. That makes no sense.
chubbyish··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
Same here. I love software but also hate it. Too many decisions.

During lockdown I relish the opportunity to clean the house and cook because they are straightforward tasks where there are clear goals and I always achieve success.

Software for me these days involves too much despair and worry over whether things are done the right way.

The sarcasm was because of the non-chalant tone of the commenter, that there are not other people’s lives to at least consider as consequences.

Sorry to hear of your situation. Agree, by no means are these issues clear cut in any way.

I was referring to the part in the article where Singer and the black employee are discussing the existence of white supremacy at the company.

But you make a good point though regarding HR complaints.

Q: what would you say though if an employee presses you on whether you personally think it’s racism?

Then if you don’t address it you are on the hook.

“This sounded to me like” is the problem.

Everyone hears what they want to hear for their narrative. Then it becomes a juicy internet drama rather than some mundane thing.

But why didn’t Trump come out to condemn genocide?

And I haven’t heard Biden condemn pedaphilia either...

DHH agreed to delete it immediately.

The politics was when one Asian employee wouldn’t let the issue die and posted the path to genocide pyramid about how laughing at funny names was just a step on the way to genocide.

Talk about jumping to conclusions.

chubbyish··on Inside the all-hands meeting that led to a third of Basecamp employees quitting
The problem with this and ALL arguments comes down to definitions.

“I don’t think there is white supremacy....of course there is white supremacy etc.”

What I would have done is get them to define what each means by white supremacy in detail...then debate on the detail.

The chilling statement at the end was: “white supremacy is silence”.

This kind of thing is straight out of the history books. You must say the right things and have said them at the right time or you are against us.

This human behavior is such a copy-paste from other authoritarian regimes in the past such as Mao’s China and the USSR gestapo.

I think SV lives too much in a bubble.

The company got lots of free press from this. There will be many who will agree with Basecamp’s stance.

Basecamp will easily hire new people.

There are many who would love to work at a top SV company with strong values and a good culture where they do not have to worry about being cancelled by their fellow employees for not towing the progressive line.

Other companies would have similarly good results proposing similar measures I would expect.

There is a large contingent of SV developers who are just plain toxic. They make themselves feel better and avoid feeling with their own personal issues by targeting others.

They problem is they do great things for the software community because they have a drive sustained by trying to fix everything around them instead of things they can’t fix about themselves.

So we need them, and enable them, but suffer the consequences. Which is where I think DHH and Freid got cut by the double edged sword.

The people are fickle. They need to be led.
chubbyish··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
The scary thing is that there are so many companies willing to hire these types of employees leaving basecamp.

Those who have the expectation of talking progressive politics at work and getting what they want or they leave.

I wouldn’t touch any of them.

chubbyish··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
Companies ain’t democracies.
chubbyish··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
Everyone has laughed at these kinds of jokes.

Also, if someone had a funny name and they went against progressive politics, then they would be laughing about it. How about all the Donald Drumpf stuff from Oliver.

It puzzles me what progressives actually do laugh at when so much is forbidden and everything is somehow insensitive.

Most likely is that they are all just hypocrites.

chubbyish··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
I wonder how those who wanted political discussions allowed would feel for example if they had to have political discussions with Trump supporters.

I’ve never come across a leftist who wanted to debate anything or was open to changing their mind, or even wanted others to change their mind.

It’s all just intimidation tactics, name-calling, and cancelling.

This is what is unique today. There’s no trying to convince someone to “come to our side”.

Once an enemy, always an enemy.

chubbyish··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
At the extreme ends of the spectrum people always end up turning on each other.

Many liberals like DHH who don’t stay up to the minute eventually get cancelled.

The US left is unrecognizable from just a few years ago. I couldn’t imagine being able to dissent on anything in public.

And who knows what will be outlawed in the future.

Hopefully it all collapses somehow.
