chrysoprace··on Friendship ended with Deno, now Node is my best friend
I wanted Deno to succeed to have a single standardised toolchain, but with Deno having its own APIs you'd effectively have to architect your application to be a "Deno app" and it created two different ecosystems. The best way to make your app portable would be to use the provided Node APIs, cutting a lot of the value from Deno.

chrysoprace··on Effect 4.0
Is there a way to implement Effect without it becoming a leaky abstraction that takes over your whole app? Presumably you'd have to create an entire abstraction layer with strict boundaries, such as nestjs does with RxJS Observables, but even that has problems with leaking Observables when you need to hook into the framework's lifecycle.
chrysoprace··on SvelteKit 3
Been using SvelteKit 3 on a couple of personal projects since the beta and haven't had any issues. The best part is that it barely introduces new features and instead improves on existing features.
chrysoprace··on SvelteKit 3
The idiomatic way to do data fetching in stable SvelteKit is via load functions.[0]

They still do a good job and allow you to cache the results and invalidate that cache, but they are at a route/layout level rather than at a component level, which is what remote functions solve.

chrysoprace··on SvelteKit 3
They're effectively ready to use even if experimental; the migration path is typically pretty painless when features are stabilised and the codemods get you most of the way. There's a couple of missing features for them but if you don't need those then it's not a problem.
chrysoprace··on Minimal Phone 2
It's still full Android. You could get part of the way there by just installing a different launcher.
chrysoprace··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
The USB-C port for charging is on the battery itself; their store diagram doesn't show if the battery itself can be disconnected for power passthrough.
chrysoprace··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
That makes more sense then. I did not realise that US electronics prices were before tax.
chrysoprace··on NEO Emacs – GPU-Accelerated Emacs Powered by Rust
Oh I'm just not a lisp fan, and with it being a bespoke language for Emacs it has the same issue as VimScript: you have to learn a language just for configuring your editor. With something like Lua, it's simple to learn and I can use that knowledge for things other than just configuring my editor.
chrysoprace··on NEO Emacs – GPU-Accelerated Emacs Powered by Rust
With neovim's cult following I figured it was only a matter of time before somebody made a similar rewrite for Emacs, even if it does smell of vibe-coding based on the README.

I don't see any notes in the README about alternative scripting engines, elisp was always the main thing that turned me off from emacs. Does anybody know if they plan to add something like Lua?

chrysoprace··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Aussies are getting it at a premium, too.

USD$1059 (256GB) should be AUD$1483, retailing for AUD$1609 - a AUD$126 premium.

USD$1299 (1TB) should be AUD$1819, retailing for AUD$1969 - a AUD$150 premium!

chrysoprace··on Audacity 4.0
Beat me to it, I was just about to post this. It's a really cool breakdown of what goes into supporting and modernising such old open source software.
chrysoprace··on Hang on to Your Firefox
I use Firefox, but Mozilla is increasingly eroding user trust and being primarily funded by Google to avoid a monopoly does not give me confidence either. When Google implement an anti-user feature, Mozilla have to begrudgingly implement it, and that is not a healthy ecosystem. There's a good chance that I'll move from Firefox when Ladybird reaches feature-parity, but they'll likely fall into the non-standard standards (Chrome-pushed features) trap all the same to avoid having sites break.

I don't know how we solve this, other than to hold Google accountable, but that in turn hurts Firefox. At least in that case we'll hopefully have Ladybird as a truly independent browser.

chrysoprace··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
There's never been a better time to switch to Firefox. Hopefully soon we'll have another player in this space with Ladybird but for now, Firefox is almost necessary to use the internet unimpeded.

There are also some good Firefox forks out there, and I have been daily driving Zen for nearly a year. However, Librewolf and Floorp are both good options if you don't like Firefox's defaults or their push for more AI features (which you can turn off, to be fair).

chrysoprace··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
(Not a Rails developer, just an outside observer)

Isn't Rails highly opinionated with a focus on being batteries-included? I'm not defending the choice to include Zoom but a batteries-included (for better or for worse) distro is exactly what I would expect from the creator of Rails.

chrysoprace··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
My current standing desk is a custom desk built from some wholesale parts from Linak and a custom MDF board. When we went to build a similar one for my partner we no longer had access to the same MDF supplier (i.e. my dad's startup), so we just went down to the local IKEA and bought a desk board and put it together all the same. Sure it's cheap chipboard, but all the magic is in the frame, actuators and control box so to replace the board is really straightforward and cheap as chips.
chrysoprace··on Show HN: Typebase – A single-folder back end you write in TypeScript
Next.js is a poor choice for a client-side application. It is first and foremost a server-side framework, and trying to force it to be client-side is to work against it. There are so many better options than Next.js for dedicated client-side front-ends.
chrysoprace··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
In the past I've purchased a rail pass because I figured it'd be more economical but last trip we just got a couple of IC cards and just booked our shinkansen and that was honestly the best experience. The problem with the rail pass was that it could only be used on some services, and the IC card was usable on most. The most confusing thing is just figuring out which local transport companies have a slightly different network, but it was honestly not bad.
chrysoprace··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Could be regional - however it's odd that it pops up on old.reddit.com but not reddit.com.
chrysoprace··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Old Reddit is now completely unusable without an account. Maybe it's time for me to finally stop using it.
chrysoprace··on I'm becoming AI-blind
I find this struggle with coding too. When Claude spits out a plan I have to really focus to not skim over the details. It's also difficult to parse the plan because I have to work backwards to determine if the high level context matches my understanding of what Claude will do.

For those that don't know, this is an initiative started by Louis Rossmann and is largely run by a few volunteers.

chrysoprace··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
I built a new main rig in November because I saw the memory prices going up. I overpaid about AUD$110 above its RRP. The same kit is now AUD$610 above RRP from the same retailer.

Here's hoping I can wait out the current shortage before any upgrades (I typically only upgrade every 5-7 years or so anyway) or replacements, because I do not plan to pay the new price.

chrysoprace··on fx :Tiny, open, native coding agent.
It's a Vercel project, so I assume this is intentional. The steps to get started are to log in with Vercel or add an AI Gateway key.
chrysoprace··on fx :Tiny, open, native coding agent.
Hacker news generally follows trends, and this is the current trend.

The discussion around coding agents nowadays is steering towards harnesses (which is probably a better description of what this is). "Agent" here is doing a lot of heavy lifting and has become a bit of a catch-all term to describe a model + harness + tooling + prompt + some other things that I've probably not thought about. The harness is a part that's being explored more as many believe it's where we can get some better performance out of the models.

This one in particular is from Vercel who provide a service to use models, so they have a vested interest in providing a harness.

chrysoprace··on Teaching my kid to code with a modern MUD
Given Canon is invite-only and most of the article is breaking down the technical implementation, that seems highly unlikely.
chrysoprace··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
I hadn't read this article until now, but I started catching myself using the word at work a few years ago and I've actively been trying to avoid using it for the reasons laid out in this post.
