chrysoprace··on Software for One
Local first is a model I'm exploring. Combined with PWA it's pretty good and doesn't need to be native. LLMs are most useful for apps that are Good Enough™ anyway, and struggle with the remaining 5-10%.
chrysoprace··on Software for One
I'm building a podcast app just for me, because the podcast app I typically use (PocketCasts) is really good but there's just a couple of features I'd like and they don't bring out a lot of new features since it's not a monthly SaaS.

LLMs are a good help here because side projects typically slow down for me when I run into bugs / troubleshooting. So while I genuinely believe struggle is necessary for learning, being able to get over that hump to build something I need makes a big difference.

I'm not vibe coding the app though, since I actually want to know what it does. But I can see it being helpful for people who just need something and don't care about how it works.

chrysoprace··on Show HN: CheapFoodMap – A map of good meals under $10
The first thing I did was zoom way out and drag it all the way to Australia. You can get a user's approximate location by looking up their IP against a geolocation service and center their map on there in case they deny permission.

I think there might also be ways to look up purchasing power, for what the equivalent of "under $10" (i.e. a cheap meal) is relative to the local currency.

I've been feeling for a while that as we keep increasing model size, we're going through the opposite of the PC revolution.

The "democratisation" talk from the frontier labs is especially egregious when they only release closed models (gpt-oss hardly counts) and are trying everything they can to make it harder to run open models.

chrysoprace··on Git rebase -i is not that scary
I know, but as you say that still presents a barrier to entry.

A lot of talented developers that I've worked with use visual git clients exclusively, so imagine their horror when presented not only with an editor they don't use, but also a text-based menu (`git rebase -i`).

chrysoprace··on Git rebase -I is not that scary
I wonder if it's because it opens in the default visual editor (typically vi/vim) and while I'm primarily a (neo)vim user now, it is certainly not the most intuitive editor to get started with without guidance.
chrysoprace··on Git rebase -I is not that scary
Yeah like the other commenter below mentioned, `rerere` takes a lot of the pain out of layering rebased changes. It's important (IMO) to make sure each commit still contains a logical change and a working system, even with an incremental rebase.
chrysoprace··on Did they ghost you?
That makes more sense. That's still a reference I guess. I was more confused about straight up denying somebody a reference, that would immediately make tenure at a company worth less.
chrysoprace··on Did they ghost you?
I have never heard of not allowing references. Is that a US thing?

While I don't love providing references, given they are such a standard part of the employment process (at least here in Australia), I can't see how a company could disallow providing character references. That would be a big red flag if I discovered that after starting to work somewhere.

chrysoprace··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
There are plenty of people (myself included) who are critical of Anthropic. Sentiment isn't universal amongst a crowd, it might just feel that way due to the way comments are surfaced on HN once posts reach the front page.
chrysoprace··on Decoding the obfuscated bash script on a Uniqlo t-shirt
My old colleague had one with a Go program[0] which I always thought was quite cool.

chrysoprace··on Podman v6.0.0
I'm not sure about macOS, but it is seamless on Linux for my use cases. One thing to note is that Podman Compose defaults to docker-compose as the provider, and I haven't used the podman-compose provider (confusingly named slightly different to Podman Compose, which is the top level abstraction on top of docker-compose or podman-compose). You can still run containers through the Docker engine with Podman, if you need to.

chrysoprace··on Steam Machine launches today
That's my hope as well. I don't need/want a Steam Machine, but I want it to succeed, especially if it forces better support for anti-cheat.

Maybe it'll become a cheaper entry-level machine in a couple of years if they can keep producing them.

chrysoprace··on Hacker News but for independent blogs
That's a good user setting, but as opening in the same tab is the default browser behaviour then it should really stay that way. Opening in a new tab takes control away from the user.
chrysoprace··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
The two job interviews I had recently - the interviewers were clearly AI maximalists. My answer each time had been to the effect of "yeah I use it but I make sure to check it over thoroughly since it can make mistakes" and I'm guessing that wasn't the answer they were looking for.

It's a gamble of the dice as to whether the engineering manager is equally realistic about LLMs or has unrealistic expectations about what LLMs can or can't do.

chrysoprace··on Show HN: I Derived a Pancake
The Sourdough Framework[0] is a really good book that specifically deals with sourdough, but has some good maths and theory. It actually doesn't have many recipes, but it's a good read. The author has a pizza calculator[1] too, which only has two variables (dough weight and hydration).

chrysoprace··on Show HN: I Derived a Pancake
Awesome work. I'm really interested in the parametric-driven recipe card. I wanted to do something like this for bread recipes where you can tweak the hydration / salt levels to alter the recipe but still get a traditional recipe card. I would be really curious to hear about the approach in more detail.

chrysoprace··on Ask HN: When did computers stop being fun?
For me the price of components rising increases the barrier to entry into enthusiast computer hobbies. If they stabilise at the current price long-term then I'll be pretty sad.

As for coding in particular, I think it's natural to move on from certain hobbies. I don't have the same hobbies I did 5 years ago, and recreational coding has come and gone for me in waves.

At the moment I've got a fun project where I'm learning something new (local-first apps, podcasts), so the excitement is there, but I wasn't coding recreationally at the same rate a few months ago when I didn't have a goal.

Find a hobby that's fun for you, even if it's not coding.

chrysoprace··on Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged
Not sure there is much of a point in reviewing a port of this size. It has >1000 instances of `unsafe` and uses the same patterns as the zig code according to Jarred. It feels like a vibe-ported version of what the TypeScript team are doing porting from TypeScript > Go with codemods.

chrysoprace··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
Is this when you add a commit through VSC or does the editor add some git hook?
chrysoprace··on Zed 1.0
Sure but that turns my IDE into a text editor, where as Zed is a great backup IDE.
chrysoprace··on Zed 1.0
I've always thought of Zed as a good Sublime Text alternative. I can tinker with and potentially break my Neovim config, but I'll have Zed as a backup for when I need to do a quick edit. Their Vim mode is the best I've used outside of JetBrains (or Vim itself).
chrysoprace··on I quit drinking for a year
Probably just a legacy thing. Might as well have a vanilla cake trigger an age check for all the good it'll do.
chrysoprace··on I quit drinking for a year
I've found that nowadays I largely like it for the taste (which often surprises non-beer drinkers) and so I'm quite pleased that non-alcoholic options are becoming more widespread.

My main wish is for non-alcoholic craft beer to become much more widespread and cheaper. In Australia alcohol is taxed at a ludicrous rate, but non-alcoholic drinks are not, however they often attract the same price - which is disappointing.

chrysoprace··on Framework Laptop 13 Pro
I'll be excited to buy one of these (or the newer iteration) if component prices ever return to pre-2025 levels. AUD$800 for 32GB RAM is insanity (which is of course not within their control, but my purchasing impulses are - at least for now).
chrysoprace··on Cal.diy: open-source community edition of cal.com
Bonus: if you pick cal.zone you can have fun with pizza puns.
chrysoprace··on Cloudflare Email Service
Unless I've misunderstood something, the Cloudflare price is like 3x of AWS SES. It probably won't matter for small scale products, but it definitely makes a difference at a large scale.
