chromaton··on Changes to Fusion 360 for Personal Use
This sucks. As I saw this news, I'm in the middle of writing up a tutorial involving exporting 2D files from Fusion 360.
chromaton··on Endlessh: An SSH Tarpit
Something like:

  if(IP==attackerIP) {
    for 10000 times
       write random byte
       sleep 10 seconds
  }
chromaton··on Endlessh: An SSH Tarpit
I've successfully used an HTTP tarpit to cut down on registration spam. The attacks were being launched from only a handful of (presumably compromised) hosts. If I blocked them, they'd switch to a different attacking host. But I discovered if I tarpitted them, they'd be slowed down to the point where they weren't a problem any more.
chromaton··on JDK 15
I once used it for an embedded expression evaluation language in a Java application.
chromaton··on Leaked S-1 screenshots show Palantir losing $579M in 2019
Everyone who looked into a palantir in Lord of the Rings got accurate data, but bad information. (That is, the images were real, but the context was misleading.)
chromaton··on S&P 500 Return Attribution: Its 1% economy
How do you test the historic returns of this strategy?
chromaton··on S&P 500 Return Attribution: Its 1% economy
Is there an S&P 5 index fund or ETF?
chromaton··on Apple helped make 'top secret' iPod for US government
Government: "We'll give you this big no-bid contract, but there's one other thing you need to do for us first..."
chromaton··on Welders set off Beirut blast while securing explosives
One thing I haven't heard about yet: who was paying for all that prime warehouse storage space all these years?
chromaton··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
I think it's your day to do dishes.
chromaton··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
Since it's HN: Bill Gates has mentioned he likes washing dishes. I can't stand it myself.
chromaton··on Woodman’s Markets to deploy aisle-roving robots
Wal-Mart in is using automatic floor sweeping robots with customers present. They're made by Tennant with electronics by Brain Corp. You can buy them through Grainger.
chromaton··on 536 was ‘the worst year to be alive’ (2018)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_weather_events_of_535–...
chromaton··on Security Bulletin VLC 3.0.11
Are there any exploits based on fonts?
chromaton··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
These monitors and most of the ones mentioned in the thread are tiny. Whatever happened to the dream of the full-wall display? I really like my 43" 4K LG monitor, but apparently this type of monitor is rarely produced these days. A quick Newegg search shows exactly 1 monitor with similar specs and it's more than twice the cost of what I paid for mine two years ago.
chromaton··on Signal app downloads spike as US protesters seek message encryption
My wife. Also required it for all my employees, but that's a bit different.
chromaton··on UFC files trademark for 'UFSEA' following satirical suggestion from John Oliver
In the Antarctic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_nullius#Current_claims_o...
chromaton··on First Robotics Competition: An International High-School Robotics Competition
National Robotics League is fighting robots for high schools. I know a lot of people like to shit on this type of event for various reasons, but it's really the only type of STEM competition that's gotten any mainstream popularity.

I agree that having the competition rules change every year makes it harder for less well funded and backed schools to compete. Also, requiring specific hardware just to field a competition makes things much harder. NRL doesn't have that problem.

chromaton··on SteamCAD – 2D CAD designed to draw steam locomotives
> All it does is draw and manipulate straight and curved lines. It doesn't keep track of any relationships or properties of the lines, and it doesn't know anything about areas defined by the lines.

All 2D CAD software worked like this for a long time. It's "Computer Aided Drafting": a computerized way to do what used to be done with pencil and paper.

chromaton··on E-VENT: Emergency ventilator design toolbox
The real fallback for lack of ventilator machines is the use of the bag valve mask. This is a manually operated device, no motors or electronics.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_valve_mask

I have to assume this is more reliable than whatever somebody hacked together in their garage. Your average builder may be able to make something that works OK in testing, but having it work 24/7 by people unfamiliar with its quirks is a different matter entirely.

The official word out of New York is that they are going to use bag valve masks when they run out of ventilators and train people how to squeeze the bag.

chromaton··on Costco will not allow returns on high-demand items like toilet paper, water
Our Costco (Atlanta) this past weekend had the entire back aisle filled with bottled water. Last weekend it was Kirkland Paper Towels.
chromaton··on Denmarks shuts down all schools, daycare facilities, universities, highschools
Fulton County, Georgia (Atlanta) shut down all schools after a teacher was diagnosed.
chromaton··on Reddit has become a guide to personal finance
In addition to the benefits stuff listed here, you can also go backwards on income due to the Earned Income Tax Credit cutoff.
chromaton··on Using symbolic regression to predict rare events
I have used http://zunzun.com for a similar effect in the past.
chromaton··on Fake “like” factories – how we reverse engineered facebooks user IDs [video]
I wrote about this a year ago on my blog: https://planiverse.wordpress.com/2019/01/11/advertising-to-⅔...

In short, the fake accounts had several factors in common: - No or almost no public posts. - The only public posts being an update of the cover photo and profile photo in 2017. - The profile photos tended not to be headshots: a photo of a cup of coffee, say, or a landscape. - Between 20-100 friends. - Friends tended to be in places like India, the Middle East, or Southeast Asia. - Their gender didn’t match the name or photo about half the time: a “Martha” referred to as “he” by Facebook, for example.

chromaton··on Tesla Cybertruck
Reminds me of a Syd Mead design or something from Car Wars.
chromaton··on The China Cultural Clash
Apple is selling their image as much as anything.
chromaton··on The China Cultural Clash
Even if it means bad press for saying nothing?
chromaton··on The China Cultural Clash
Could be a good angle to work as Trump has done some stuff lately that's also likely to anger the CCP.
chromaton··on The China Cultural Clash
How can we get Tim Cook to make a statement regarding democracy in Hong Kong? Either he refuses, which would be supporting the brutal crackdowns, or he forces China to act as they did like in the NBA case.
