chromaton··on The night I met Einstein (1955)
Had to be after 1931, when the Crosby song (the title of which he gets wrong) was recorded.
chromaton··on Computerized Cooking (1985)
I've always missed having an equipment list in recipes in addition to ingredients.

I think the tree idea is good, as it shows what steps can be done in parallel. It would also be helpful to show how long each subtree is expected to take with working time and waiting time.

chromaton··on Ask HN: Should I sell my vintage computer collection?
If it's not organized, it's not a collection, just a pile.

I collected classic video games for a while. After a while, I realized I'd be happier if I focused on one area (Atari). Eventually, I wasn't playing or displaying the consoles or games, so I got rid of all of it except for one nice 2800 console and a couple of the funnest games which I wanted to show my kids.

Somebody else got to enjoy the stuff that was just sitting in my boxes. No regrets.

chromaton··on Smart mushroom growing device for beginners
I've done this technique: https://namyco.org/docs/grow_oyster_mushrooms_on_kitty_litte...

It's pretty easy. I learned it at a workshop for local mushroom hunting group.

Google gives a reasonable answer to that question.
chromaton··on Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
I think signature lines on the posts helped with that.
chromaton··on The case for expanding rather than eliminating gifted education programs (2021)
There's different versions of that meme, so please make sure you know which one you're arguing about.

Edit: a long take on all the variations, by the meme's originator! https://medium.com/@CRA1G/the-evolution-of-an-accidental-mem...

chromaton··on Intuit asked Mailchimp employees to pay medical costs out of pocket
Depends. If your employer doesn't offer health insurance, you can shop for plans on the government health insurance marketplace. These plans can have substantial subsidies.
chromaton··on NotepadNext: A cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
Yes, it does run well on Wine.
chromaton··on Java 18 / JDK 18: General Availability
I think for most people it's the introduction of the module system. If it causes code to break in libraries you're using and there's no direct replacement for those libraries, it's a big hill to get over.
chromaton··on Antarctic sea ice hits lowest minimum on record
Possible, but expensive.

chromaton··on Peloton replaces CEO and lays off 2,800 people
I believe they had install crews to go around and set up their bikes in people's homes. This had to be a lot of employees right there.
chromaton··on JFK Assassination Records – 2021 Additional Documents Release
Zoomed out, it all looks grey, but zoomed in, you can kind of read it.
chromaton··on I Live in Arkansas. Why Is My State Telling Me Not to Boycott Israel?
If you do ITAR work, there are also federal-level reporting regulations regarding boycotting Israel.
chromaton··on SpaceX Unveils Redesigned Second-Gen Starlink Dish
A big complaint for the first dish was that the cable was hardwired in, which made snaking it through walls, etc. hard to do. I wonder if this updates that.
chromaton··on Pre-industrial workers had a shorter workweek than today's (1991)
A very different situation in degree. The nobility in Hungary considered the peasants to be sub-human. This was partly because they were physically distinct from the upper classes. This, in turn, was because they didn't have enough to eat, though the nobles didn't recognize that.

Also, the high-born were free to rape and kill peasants with no repercussions.

Like I say, read the book.

chromaton··on Pre-industrial workers had a shorter workweek than today's (1991)
Read The Undefeated by George Paloczi-Horvath. He's a 20th century writer who lived through the tail end of the feudal system in Hungary. The lives of the peasants were not great. They were mal-nourished and lived at the whims of their lords.
