christkv··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
Sure be a lobbying group but without public funding. If your members can't be bothered to pay the cost of the union it can cease to exist.
christkv··on The unbearable cheapness of open weight models
You forgot

3. Try to get the government to "certify models" to cause regulatory capture which is what both Anthropic and OpenAI has been pushing. No certification no use in business.

christkv··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
I don't dispute that unions were important and offer some sort of benefit. What I don't like is that most of the big unions in Europe receive a lot of governmental money and become lobbying groups for political parties. I would not consider them independent in any sense of the word.
christkv··on Wikipedia Workers to Seek Union Recognition
Unions at least in the European setting not really effective in protecting workers in the way people seem to imagine. The labor laws are somewhat but not really. It just increases the cost of getting rid of people and reduces mobility. So i don’t know what utopian view people have of unions but reality does not reflect that. It also leads to a salaried class of union representatives inside big companies that causes their own problems as they are the ones granting favors and benefits to their friends.
christkv··on Swiss parliament lifts ban on new nuclear power plants
You could build the reactors inside the mountains to improve the security and effects of things like meltdowns.
christkv··on Anthropic employees accuse Trump administration of targeting them
I hear this argument about the weapon a lot but it makes no sense. Sure for intelligence processing etc but what weapons system would an llm be a good match for.
christkv··on Anthropic employees accuse Trump administration of targeting them
They proposed a plan to ensure their dominance of the space and to cripple any competitors using regulation as the weapon. So I’m not going to feel sorry for them and their temporary plight
christkv··on Ask HN: Has anyone replaced Claude/GPT with a local model for daily coding?
Waiting for this https://github.com/antirez/ds4 to stabilize for strix halo.
christkv··on UK Brings in Full Social Media Ban for Under-16s
Its harder than you think and no "state" ban will work if the 14-15 year old is smart enough to get around the child locks at the os level either. Next they will ban VPN just wait for it.
christkv··on Anthropic's Safety Superpower
For now I suspect however that the gigantic models are not needed and you will be able to do pretty much what you need in a specific domain with 120b or lower. There is so much trash in the frontier models. I don't need all the world's slam poetry for my coding tasks for example.
christkv··on UK Brings in Full Social Media Ban for Under-16s
Have you not discovered piehole or child controls? My kids stuff is completely locked down it was not hard. I don't need the state to be involved.
christkv··on How to earn a billion dollars
Why do you think state control is democratic
christkv··on How to earn a billion dollars
So what does you practical utopia look like in real terms. What's the master plan beyond I don't like people making money from what people want? What does that utopia look like in practice.
christkv··on RTX 5080 and RTX 3090 Setup: 80 Tok/s on Qwen 3.6 27B Q8
It's also going to fail consistently. When calling Claude you don't know what version of the model you are talking to, it might be quantified sure to load or have been patched.
christkv··on Statement on US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Anthropic already with Fable basically said they will be the arbiter of who gets to use the "godmodel" with no criteria specified. So no thank you. We need to make llm's open source and completely disconnect from these companies or live in a dystopian "Anthropic" etc social credit score system where only the "blessed" have access to models.

christkv··on Open Reproduction of DeepSeek-R1
What is the estimated cost these days to train something like this to conclusion?
christkv··on Why AI hasn't replaced software engineers, and won't
LLMs is a little like the guy in Memento right. Every single conversation is it looking at the compressed scribbles of the context.
christkv··on Why AI hasn't replaced software engineers, and won't
The problem starts with a project of 20 engineers pumping 1000+ lines of code a day into a shared code base.

Single dev it's amazing, tiny team still good, large team wohoooo

christkv··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
Ban them. Beyond cars is the fact that somehow its ok to buy unregulated chinese made products following no safety standards of the EU on temu, shein, aliexpress etc allowing them to skip all the costs of producing safe consumer goods in the EU. Ban all of them or put a 1000% tariff on all of the items. To long the EU has been followed the financial interests of German industry and their dealings in China. Since that phase is over we should treat China as the hostile power it is and force cuts to trade. Not a single Euro more in trade in than export to China.
christkv··on BYD is bringing its 5-min 'Flash' electric car charging to Canada
I'm against BYD factories unless car parts shipped from china are not heavily tariffed. You don't want to allow them to ship entire kits from china to final assemble in Europe. You want them to buy from providers in Europe. Otherwise I'm in favor of massive tariffs on their cars to avoid dumping.
christkv··on Why AI hasn't replaced software engineers, and won't
I think we as a professional class have gotten a bit overwhelmed with the magic slot machine. 2 in the morning let me just do one more pull on the slop machine. I WILL win this time.

It's a phase. The problem is the managerial class sees it as a magic black box and don't understand it's limitations. Calling it AI does not help either. It's the "rockstar developer" illness but on crack.

christkv··on Why AI hasn't replaced software engineers, and won't
I have found that the attention moves to thinking about the things I want done and planning, reading and iterating over the specs and other artefacts that will be part of running the agents. I still need to understand the code and iterate over it to get to a usable and maintainable point.

I find the problem is we are reaching the top of the slop curve. I will subside because it's impossible to actually do anything useful with all the output. There will just be a ton of half-finished and abandoned projects. Whatever gets into production will require more eyes on it.

I just think a lot of people are still stuck in the "holy f** I'm so productive" and working themselves into the ground being productive pumping out code. I think it's a phase that will pass.

christkv··on Meta steals a tactic from Tesla and builds data centers in tents
Nothing of importance would be lost. But think about the amount of USD in each rack.
christkv··on Meta steals a tactic from Tesla and builds data centers in tents
Just waiting for the first heist
christkv··on Claude Fable 5
Is this model a from scratch training?
christkv··on If Claude Fable stops helping you, you'll never know
In five years I think you will be able to train a frontier modem for much less money than today and the power hungry hardware of today will be cheap second hand due to the power usage.
christkv··on Where is the AI jobs crisis?
Now that Claude Fable is out I’m sure it will finally come true /s
christkv··on Apple decided not to roll out Siri in EU after denied request for exemption
None. The EU is getting more and more un democratic by the year. More power centralized in the bureaucracy vis regulations and other mechanisms.
