Here's my small contribution to furthering the effort: https://beats.wiki
I see the potential and I experience the need regularly: I want to watch movies with friends remotely in a cool VR environment that feels like we're watching together in a theater.
In practice my options are to:
- pay to watch "a vast movie selection" of 140 films, the majority of which are anime[1]
- run the buggy (and so aptly named) Bigscreen Beta PC client[2] which will probably crash during weird unlikely edge cases like your screensaver turning on and critically depends on your internet upload speed for a good movie watching experience for everyone. Get ready for frequent "wait is it showing a black screen for you guys?" troubleshooting. It only runs on beefy PCs right now but don't worry: a macOS version is being worked on circa 2019[3].
- send the video file to everyone and get them to download it to a folder of their headset (which involves running Android File Transfer; nontechnical friends will struggle) then start a shared room. Arguably the least painful option with the best overall quality.
When it works though it's so good. Watching a film in Bigscreen feels like watching a film in an actual theater. Their drawing and popcorn throwing features are hilarious and fun. Their spacial audio is a blast. Their selection of virtual theaters is plentiful.
Here's the experience I want to watch a film with friends in Bigscreen:
- log into my Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ account through Bigscreen
- create a new room
- pick a movie
- share an invite code
I understand for that to work Bigscreen would need to make complicated partnerships happen, so in the meanwhile I'd like to be able to:
- drag and drop a video file into bigscreen.com/newroom
- see an invite code I can join from my headset and share with other people
Please someone create this experience. You can use WebXR[4] to do the whole thing with the web stack you already know and you could probably just download a ready-made 3D model of a movie theater[5].

> Melanoma? True, the sun worshippers had a higher incidence of it—but they were eight times less likely to die from it.[1]

I'm in Dallas, TX which has a reasonable window of about three hours in the middle of every day where the sun is high enough to shine a substantial amount of vitamin-D-producing UVB rays. Even so it takes conscious effort to schedule an hour outside in minimal clothing and it's hard to do when it's cold and doesn't work if the weather is overcast.
In the winter I'm only able to get vitamin D from sunlight maybe once a week.
Now I take vitamin D supplements[2] and I'm experimenting with UVB bulbs made for lizard terrariums.

2. Vitamin D supplements are much cheaper if you get a pill maker, empty pill shells, and a bulk bag of vitamin D powder: about 5¢/50k IU pill which is a week's dose.
React+Nextjs on Firebase makes the deployment and scaling steps so much easier than on Rails. I'm very conscious of the platform risk of depending so much on Firebase but gosh darn it they've spoiled me.
Technologies: React, Next, Firebase, serverless functions, ffmpeg, React Native, Twilio, Stripe, GPT-3

I'm curious what marketing mobile games looks like in 2023. App store optimization? Buying app store ads? Getting people to review your game?
The workflow to do a minor edit in a full editor like Final Cut Pro looks roughly like:
- open Final Cut Pro
- create a new proj... oh shoot no, a new library? Yeah that's right.
- click import and track down the videos on my hard drive
- now create a new project and drag the videos into the timeline
- use the blade tool to cut out a segment
- export the video which is... uh... oh yes under the share menu bar and then the format needs to be... hmmm... I think export for YouTube
- wait approximately `videoLength/5` for the video to export
- oh my goodness my hard drive somehow has `videoSize*4` less space
In LosslessCut that workflow looks like:
- open LosslessCut[2]
- drag and drop your videos in
- mark the start and end times of either the segments you want to keep or the ones you want to take out
- hit export and... wow, it's already done? How is that possible?! And it's just in the same format as my source video! Perfect. Oh man and it even saved a little xml file so if I happen to open the same file again I haven't lost my human work of marking the in and out points.
The cuts are usually slightly off from where I'd ideally like them to be, I think because LosslessCut can only cut on i-frames[3], but it's a totally fair tradeoff for my use case.
I liked the minimalist editor interface so much I copied the timeline part of it for a dedicated social media video clipper I'm working on[4].
If you'd like to try it out I strongly suggest installing it from GitHub and donating the amount you would've spent in the macOS app store. The macOS app store version has fewer disk permissions and adds an extra step asking for access to each folder you want to edit in.

2. frustratingly, right clicking a video and selecting "open in LosslessCut" doesn't work
3. i-frames in most video codecs are "key frames" that repaint the entire frame. Most frames are p-frames or "predicted frames" which just store a delta from the last frame.

You're probably friends with several people in that top 20% because they know a lot of people. The average number of friends your friends have including the outliers is going to be higher than the number of friends you have.
Thanks for the affirmation. My wife and I are 31 so a 10% drop is definitely something we can recover from. We've already lived through this high-risk crypto part of our portfolio falling to half it's value over the last 19 months but the other half completely vanishing overnight has hit me psychologically harder.
Instead of the narrative of "sure the crypto dropped in value but it's done that before and gone back up and it's reasonable to think it could go back up again," "now it's on sale," and "time in the market beats timing the market," the narrative is just "it's completely gone because you got defrauded. Here's a list of the specific people responsible. You shoulda been more diligent in evaluating the risk of giving them your money ya freakin' idiot."
It sounds like as long as there's enough money to pay the admin, the government, secured creditors, and unsecured creditors, anything left over would get split amongst individual investors like me. Is that right?
Here's my rationale: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33779052
For sure. My rationale was that keeping crypto in cold storage was effectively currency speculation and didn't really do anything to add value to the world. By instead keeping it in an interest-earning account it could be earning interest independent of the exchange rate with USD and providing some value to the world in the form of liquidity and loans.
It's the same rationale I use to justify keeping money in VTSAX instead of under my mattress.
My rationale was that crypto just sitting in cold storage could only gain value if the underlying asset appreciated which is effectively currency speculation. By storing it in a crypto "bank" my money could be working to generate actual value via. liquidity and loans akin to a real bank.
If the money was earning a modest amount of interest it didn't feel like as wild of a risk. Even if the exchange rate to USD is unstable I can still see the amount of crypto going up each month.
Is there any hope of individual creditors getting any of their money back? I'm unfamiliar with how bankruptcy works.
I believe the way all of these reading time estimates are calculated is a simple `wordCount / averageWordsPerMinute`.
You asked for something that's not DIY at the hardware level, though, so I think something like the AirGradient Pre-Soldered kit would be perfect for you[1].
You'll get an Arduino connected to top-of-the-line sensors that can be flashed with your SSID to connect to your local WiFi network. Once connected, the device exposes an HTTP endpoint you can GET for the status of each sensor[2].
I've been thinking a lot about indoor air quality[3] so if this setup works for you I'd love to know!
