chrispine··on The 4-chan Go programmer
Heh! I remember getting shit about this early in my career because of a 3-star commit, because wtf is wrong with someone who needs a pointer to a pointer to a pointer?

But it wasn't; it was the address of an array of strings. Because C. It was the most straightforward solution, which I maintain to this day (some 20 years later).

(In my co-worker's defense, it probably had no comments. That part was on me.)

chrispine··on Histomap: Visualizing the 4000 year history of global power (2021)
I have this map, and we spent a LOT of time pondering it when we were making Civilization 3! (I was lead programmer on it way back when.)
chrispine··on Show HN: Domino Fit – Domino Tiling Puzzle
Hey, I love the recent UI update! Thanks so much!
chrispine··on Show HN: Domino Fit – Domino Tiling Puzzle
Looking forward to this change! I am constantly switching to the wrong piece by clicking on the piece I want when it's already selected.

Another thing that would help me is if it showed a ghosted image of where the piece will be before I place it (like Starcraft, Age of Empires, and a million other games do). If you had that, I would never place the wrong piece accidentally, or accidentally in the wrong place.

Great game, really fun!

chrispine··on Permutation City (1994)
This book sent me into a four-year-long depression and existential crisis.

Best book I ever read. I guess.

chrispine··on AI’s big rift is like a religious schism
It builds on the Peace War, and I'd read that first. (But also, both books are fairly short, much smaller than Fire Upon the Deep.)
chrispine··on Unciv
But maybe with proper pathfinding and better terrain generation? :)
chrispine··on The new science of meditation
Strong +1 for the Waking Up app. (I also ready the Waking Up book, and found it to be quite hit-or-miss for me. But the app is just wonderful.)
chrispine··on The new science of meditation
Not disagreeing, but it's also correct on some levels.
chrispine··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Thank you!
chrispine··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Well that sure looks similar:

https://pine.fm/music/ChordGear

I rotated the inner ring to capture the sense that (for example) Amin shares two notes with Cmaj and 2 notes with Fmaj, so belongs between them.

You can drag the chord gear, click it for a kind of awful synth-piano sound that I had a lot of fun making, switch modes, etc. I actually originally made this in wood/acrylic:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lwIS-1sPNyIpYM1nCcFkU9Iq... but I like how the online version renames the notes sensibly.)

Mostly I was just trying to explore music theory concepts, and have a few other toys at https://pine.fm/music

(also the code is gross; I've been a manager for almost a decade now and am rusty; you've been warned, lol)

chrispine··on TikTok “teen” AI filter is hitting hard for Gen-X users
My forties were _so far away_ in my teens, like impossibly far away. But on this side of it, it really doesn't seem like all that long ago.

Time isn't the same over here.

chrispine··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
I don't know if qnt's suggestions are the right ones for you or not (that's for you to decide), but you know what?

I believe in your ability to make a better life for yourself.

You can do this.

chrispine··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Same thing for fossil fuels, CFCs, and leaded gasoline, right? Turns out they were fine all along.
chrispine··on San Francisco decriminalizes psychedelics
It's true, but I don't think this has anything to do with decriminalization. Covid and the months of protests and Portland becoming a target for Proud Boys and the like, those are what destroyed downtown. (AFAIK, the rest of Oregon hasn't been hit in the same way at all. Even the rest of Portland is still pretty cool.)
chrispine··on Image generation ethics: Will you be an AI vegan?
Seems like a disproportionate number of these comments are about using the vegan analogy. So setting aside offense or ethics, do you think it was a good idea to go with this analogy, or is it detracting from "the value of sparking useful conversations about personal approaches to AI ethics"? (emphasis mine)
chrispine··on Image generation ethics: Will you be an AI vegan?
"vegan / not-vegan" is a false and harmful dichotomy

"meat-based" vs "plant-based" is a spectrum we are all on; no reason to make it all-or-nothing

chrispine··on You can’t eat just any leaf (2018)
For real.

Also, why are some of the links struck-out?

chrispine··on Alien intelligence and the concept of technology
When we (like, nearly everyone except maybe Wolfram) talk about intelligence, we aren't talking about computational complexity. We're talking about the ability to learn, and to apply that learning to achieve desirable outcomes. Just like swirling storms don't.

> At an abstract computational level it’s like our intelligence.

True, but abstract computation isn't what matters about intelligence. How about this thing I just made up:

By letter count, "computations" is like "intelligence".

I mean, it's true, but the number of letters in the word is also not what matters about intelligence.

The rebuttal is almost identical to the argument it rebuts: If computational complexity was the same as intelligence, then a swirling dust cloud of sufficient size would be more intelligent than all of humanity.

Which is absurd.

chrispine··on North Carolina wants to ban free EV charging
Or require CVS to disclose on each receipt how much of the bill goes towards subsidizing the other 2 meters of receipt paper.
chrispine··on Elegant six-page proof reveals the emergence of random structure
True, and there are lots of these (Bayes's theorem, Bresenham's line drawing algorithm, Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm all spring to mind). But I kind of assume that it's because it's useful to have a name for De Morgan's Laws and these others (so it stuck as a good meme in the original meaning of "meme"), rather than because we're all so impressed with this amazing result.
chrispine··on Ask HN: Is Heroku Down?
Yes, cannot push/deploy. Also can't view https://help.heroku.com/UMAUQ4UF/why-am-i-seeing-application... because it says I'm not logged in, but also I can't log in.

Also, why do I have to be logged in to view their help pages?

chrispine··on Tolkien's Paintings
Latest Chrome, macOS 12.1, using the trackpad

The scrolling is awful: feels laggy and... squishy? oily? really hard to describe, but it's horrible. Also, it feels like the scrolling sticks at random times while scrolling.

chrispine··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
link? I'd love to see it!
chrispine··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
While I'm not necessarily a Sam Harris fan in general, I am a huge fan of his Waking Up app. It's approachable, serene, sacred (but also no-nonsense), and really just beautiful. And useful! I can't say enough good things about it.
chrispine··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
From the folks who have left the LDS church that I've talked to, "friendly and with all respect" is profoundly not the experience that most have.

And my personal experience: it was a great shame on my family, and all the church wanted to know was (and this is the weirdest part) who had offended me??

chrispine··on My mindfulness practice led me to meltdown
I mean, you could say the same about guns, automobiles, table saws...
chrispine··on How to Love Animals in a Human-Shaped World
I really appreciate that you are not taking this issue as an ethical binary (100% vegan or "I could never do that"), but instead treating it as a spectrum on which our various competing values play out, with various costs and benefits. I wish our collective conversations about this took your tone more often.
chrispine··on How to Love Animals in a Human-Shaped World
Factory farming is not tens of thousands of years old. Equating that to hunting and fishing (which I think you are doing, but maybe I'm misreading you) would be "unfathomably ignorant" as well.
chrispine··on How to Love Animals in a Human-Shaped World
I know this wasn't your main point, but IMHO it's not helpful to think in binary terms: "strict vegan" or "not at all". In terms of animal welfare, or in terms of environmental impact, or whatever impels one to consider a plant-based diet, why not just view it as a spectrum?

I don't want you (or anyone) to feel tortured or self-flagellated about their diet.
