chrisldgk··on Microsoft's light-based computer marks 'the unravelling of Moore's Law'
Is is just me or does this hero image trigger PTSD?
chrisldgk··on Soya beans made more meat-like by adding genes for pig proteins
Phytoestrogens (the ones found in soy beans) have nothing to do with the human hormone estrogen other than the name (and how they look in a chemical context). They do not have any measurable impact on your hormonal makeup and this bodybuilding myth has been disproven dozens of not hundreds of times.

You know what contains actual mammal estrogen? Beef and milk from cows that have been given hormones to give more milk.

chrisldgk··on Show HN: Timechief – My Smartclock Project
I feel like a CRT buzzing whining next to my bed (or anywhere in the room) would be quite annoying. I love CRTs and understand the retro appeal of them but I’d prefer something silent instead.
chrisldgk··on Louis Rossmann: Autodesk turns lifetime licenses into subscriptions [video]
Not to condone any illegal activity from my point, but my personal approach to deceptive and consumer hostile business practices is using the software but not paying for it.
chrisldgk··on Wave of Bay Area tech layoffs may foreshadow something worse
German here, can confirm. Dutch sounds like weird German, and as a German you can usually read it, but speaking Dutch is an entirely different thing.
chrisldgk··on Delta flight lands in Charlotte without front landing gear
Airplanes rarely get scrapped for parts because of incidents like this. They have pretty extensive maintenance and repair checklists, but afaik the rate of making vessels like this airworthy is pretty high.
chrisldgk··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
This is called cumulative layout shift (CLS for short) and there’s a push in web dev to work against and around this - it’s recently become part of the performance measurement of googles lighthouse scoring and server side rendering and static site generation metaframeworks like nextjs and Astro allow you to send out the entire static page HTML without having to lazy load any new data.
chrisldgk··on Warp is a modern, Rust-based terminal with AI built in
I might look into the AI features though, it seems nice not having to wade through man pages for basic CLI stuff that I don’t really do often but is sometimes necessary
chrisldgk··on Warp is a modern, Rust-based terminal with AI built in
I’ve been using warp as my main terminal since getting a private beta key from a coworker a bit more than a year ago.

I don’t really use most of the advanced features it has to offer but I’m quite happy with it. It’s fast, it has a few ergonomic features that I haven’t seen in most macOS terminals, so no complaints here. If everything stays the way it currently is, I don’t think I’ll move from warp to something else in the near future.

chrisldgk··on The Stupid Programmer Manifesto
Boilerplate and abstraction for the sake of it may be bad, sure, but there’s something to be said about having Standards anyone can adhere to. If I use a certain structure of code that requires more boilerplate but also means that anyone who has worked in that framework before knows exactly where to find and how to edit things, that’s a net gain, even more so in bigger teams. Think about tradeoffs, the most lean and elegant solution may not always be the best.
chrisldgk··on The Stupid Programmer Manifesto
By which I mean „I don’t have the time to learn X“ would be more precise, even if less catchy for a HN headline
chrisldgk··on The Stupid Programmer Manifesto
It’s important to keep in mind that pretty much all the techniques you’re too „stupid“ for all aren’t necessities for small projects, but rather being able to manage complexity (or workload) at scale. For an MVP or a small product, keeping with the simpler techniques is absolutely fine, and adhering to those standards in many cases can even be considered overengineering.

Though there’s one thing I take issue with. „I’m too stupid“ implies that these techniques are impossible to understand, while I think it’s just a matter of being able to put in the time and effort to learn the intricacies. It’s absolutely fine if the resources (mainly time) aren’t available to you, but I don’t think it’s a matter of cognitive function.

chrisldgk··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
Am I the only person wondering why they wouldn’t demo medium/high settings on a higher framerate? Being able to run at ultra at all is quite cool, but wouldn’t it be much more interesting if you were able to run the game with 60fps at all? Is there something I’m missing?
chrisldgk··on Scientists need to get high
Speak for yourself, I’d hop into (and probably crash) a formula 1 car no questions asked
chrisldgk··on Dolphin on Steam Indefinitely Postponed
No, but the average (read: casual) user isn’t comfortable using the command line to install packages from the command line (and I don’t think SteamOS comes with a package manager UI), so there’s a huge potential install base for users if they could install it via the UI.
chrisldgk··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
Also make it look like the GR Corolla. It’s a great looking car.
chrisldgk··on France bans short-haul flights to cut carbon emissions
Depends on how you define „poor rail infrastructure“. Germany has a lot of routes and pretty much everything is well connected, but the state that the infrastructure is in with constant delays and badly maintained tracks is pretty bad.
chrisldgk··on Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud (2021) [video]
I think you’re focusing on the wrong issue here. Engine noise nowadays is a lot less of a problem than tire noise, especially with cars going 50km/h+.

Some cars are loud because people want them to be, most cars are loud because the noise the tires make when driving is loud, and that only gets worse the more cars you have around.

chrisldgk··on GradIEEEnt half decent
Always delighted to see tom7 content. Dude just thinks out of the box like no one else.
chrisldgk··on Chromebooks Are Trash (Literally)
The worst thing is that they don’t even last a week, it’s usually more like 3-4 days.

I have a few friends that use those (though I’m trying to convince them to at least get reusable ones), but what I’ve taken to doing is collect their old vaporizers and take them apart to salvage the batteries. I either use them to build mobile powerbanks, or, when they’re not usable, bring them to a place where they can be recycled correctly.

I’m hoping that some kind of legislation will pass soon though, those things are horrible for the environment either way.

chrisldgk··on Sunshine – an open-source gamestream server for Windows and Linux
Seems to me like it’s a service or application for streaming games and controls over LAN. I.e. an OSS alternative to what Steam uses for in-House game streaming.
