chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Is Perl dead?
This is a question, but isn't it used fairly often in the finance industry?
chrisclark1729··on Apple-Google to be at war in music space by Christmas
I totally agree. Can't believe they're not protecting their cash cow.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Did Apple create Ping to eventually compete with Facebook?
I wouldn't say they're so much competing with myspace or last.fm as they're poised to dominate a wide open space hobbled by those two companies poor execution. Nonetheless, I effectively agree with danishkhan.
chrisclark1729··on What Is Microsoft's Next Billion-Dollar Business? -- Redmondmag.com
Excel 2010 :)
chrisclark1729··on Four Words: I Shipped. Feedback Please
This looks pretty cool. I'm not a designer, so I don't know what's on the market already. But I have to say this is a simple (but real) problem for which you've provided an interesting solution.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Whats the most annoying thing about Netflix (if anything)?
The lack of content to be streamed, which has more to do with the studios than with Netflix.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Best Mattress?
I hear Costco has great deals on mattresses for around that price. I spent more than that because of the whole 1/3rd of your life argument.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: questions to ask freelance designer
Define what constitutes a finished product.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: What's a Good Business for a College Student to Run?
Helping people move.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: What do you listen to when coding?
Truth. As much as I love hip-hop, it's not great coding music because there are too many words which draw your focus away.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: where did you order your startup T-shirts?
I used these guys: http://www.vgkids.com/

They were really nice people, on-time, quality printing and did some extra design work to get our design ready for t-shirts.

chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Freelance - when to start the clock?
I'm sure it's best to gauge the employer, but unless commuting or meeting sessions are part of your offer I usually wouldn't start the clock until I've actually started working.

That's how I run things, maybe I'm too honest buy the win/win aspect of freelancing is that employer only pays for one specific thing and employee does one specific thing and thus commands higher rates.

chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: what is the best perl book?
I liked Sam's Learning Perl in 21 days, but I was new to both Perl and programming.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: What are you working on today?
Creating config files for a universal report loader. Then hopefully deprecating the over 100 scripts which exist to do the same thing as the universal loader.
chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: Typical Startup or Abuse?
That seems rough. I'm actually going through a similar (albeit not as extreme) situation, which is why I'm at home on a Saturday night trying to generate leads for my freelance business.

Two major points from me:

First, you shouldn't get angry. You're there of your own volition and have to make the best of your situation. I know it's rough to hear, but getting angry will just waste your time and make it harder to be proactive about improving your situation. I need to remind myself of this constantly.

Second, I cannot attest to the legality of what's happening within your company. However, it would seem that if the founder is such a tyrant then many people would defect (clients as well as employees).

It seems like you could start a competitor business which serves the companies clients better than they are being served now. Who knows, any illegal behavior might nullify a non-compete clause (I am not a lawyer so please verify).

At any rate, best of luck. I do believe that businesses who don't value their employees pay for it in the long run so hopefully these things work out.

Short term, try reaching out to some people for freelance work. It's probably the best and quickest way to raise your income.

chrisclark1729··on Ask HN: How did you find your company & job?
My girlfriend set up an informational interview for me in December 2007 with my future boss. I was not shy about saying I was willing to take a job, but wasn't pushing too hard or selling. We just had a straight conversation and by February 2008 I met some others within the company and started in March 2008.
