chris_mc··on China appears to be accelerating development of a super-heavy lift rocket
>They went from being an anti-profit, anti-market country of near absolute poverty

There's a lot more history to China than 1980-now. What I see every day on HN (and elsewhere) are new startups which are simply rent-seeking enterprises, and I don't see how that helps us.

chris_mc··on Ask HN: Did any Show HN posts turn into successful startups?
That is a great idea that not only makes you cash--at a very fair price--but also helps people connect in a genuine fashion.
chris_mc··on China appears to be accelerating development of a super-heavy lift rocket
I'm so depressed that humans won't ever achieve this. We'll fight and continue to hedonistically chase profit until we destroy ourselves.
chris_mc··on Ask HN: What made your favorite manager/supervisor/CEO so great?
Not software, but I supervised QC inspectors at a medical manufacturer. R&D engineers would constantly try to steal their time to inspect some pre-production part, when we were trying to supply the $250k+ per day manufacturing floor with production parts that were backordered and running out on the floor (we had horrible issues with supply, but that's another story). Sure, your "brand new" part needs some pre-production inspections, but not right now since that part isn't needed for a few weeks. Once I got it into their heads that if they absolutely needed a part NOW they should come to me (so I can work it into the schedule) they always got their parts on-time from us.

I'm sure this is similar to a software workflow with QA, where every developer is vying for limited QA time, so I don't think "getting furious" is too far a step.

chris_mc··on Equifax IT staff had to rerun hackers' queries to work out what was nicked
So, someone forgot to input this certificate into their Outlook Calendar, Slack /remind, or whatever, and as a result 150mm people are at risk for identity theft. Awesome. I'm so glad I have no option to prevent my data going to this super-competent company and there's no oversight by anyone external.
chris_mc··on Ranch Nation
>then in 1983 they began selling a premade, shelf-stable bottle of it

I was born in '83 and I still remember my mom mixing ranch dressing by hand in a special ranch dressing mixing bottle [0] that they sold. I always wondered why she mixed it by hand back then.

chris_mc··on Javascript: call functions without using parentheses
Nim: https://forum.nim-lang.org/t/3046

You can do almost anything with Nim, for function calls! I personally like UFCS (Uniform Function Call Syntax), aka:

    let something: int = item.function(arg2, arg3,...).function.function(vararg).etc
chris_mc··on Electron 3.0.0
I think you're correct.
chris_mc··on Electron 3.0.0
Qt, or whatever, isn't pretty enough for the designers.
chris_mc··on New bridge collapses into river in eastern Saskatchewan hours after opening
I was going to say a similar thing:

Almost looks like the foundations/pilings sunk on the one side, causing the concrete to fracture at the support points since it was being "bent" and then the slabs to fall off of the support once it had sunk enough. Kinda like this brick domino video [0], but with much larger slabs.

chris_mc··on The European Union versus the Internet
Darknet markets had a huge boom around that time, too, which could also correlate. I think it's more likely the cause than Snowden, as I think more people care about drugs than privacy.

chris_mc··on Hoʻoponopono, Hawaii’s trendy word that’s misunderstood
>What's it like for [remote] tech work?

Hawaii probably isn't the best place for most HN'ers, culturally.

Also, tech work locally in Hawaii is pretty much non-existent unless for the military, NSA, or associated government organizations.

chris_mc··on How to fail as a new engineering manager
Effectiveness is not "good leadership". He may have been very effective, but he fucked people over, probably gave people PTSD, treated others with disdain, etc. I know some people see the Elon Musks and Steve Jobs' of the world and think they're awesome and effective, but it's a net negative for the organizations they are a part of due to the human cost.
chris_mc··on Dear Moon
>If you are not an expert at something, then don't reduce what they can see and do, to only what you can see and do, and declare that they are doing nothing interesting.

Perfect, this is what I was thinking for years but couldn't put into (very good) words. If you don't understand something, don't presume to understand it via "common sense".

chris_mc··on How to fail as a new engineering manager
>Steve Jobs said it well

Steve Jobs was a class-A asshole who people who are trained in leadership agree was a poor leader of humans, even if he had great success in business. I'm not sure I'd take his leadership musings without a few grains of salt.

edit: everyone -> people who are trained in leadership

chris_mc··on The First 15 Years of PyPy – A Personal Retrospective
It's so fascinating to read these sorts of retrospectives to give myself a grounding to realize it takes time and lots of missteps to make great software. Thanks to the author, if he passes through here.
chris_mc··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
Most people do want that, though. They literally want Google to sync everything for them. Makes sense to me, I don't see your POV to be super common, honestly, except maybe amongst the die hard tech people of hn and such.

Thanks
chris_mc··on The Ethics of Consciousness Hunting
Can you imagine listening to your doctor and loved ones discussing taking you off life support and you're just not able to move? Then a lot of times, they just starve the patient to death, thinking they're basically not feeling anything, so then you starve to death while your family sits by your side. That's hell. We need to do a lot more research on conciousness and what makes a person or "animal" have that spark.
chris_mc··on The Case Against Delaware (2002)
>This is inaccurate

How so? I'm curious, as I don't know much about corporate law.

chris_mc··on 'Mindful people' feel less pain
I think of Mindfulness as setting a 'watchdog process' on your own brain: you think about how you're thinking, actively, so that you can control thoughts that might be unwanted at the time, like anger or fear. It takes you from a passenger, reacting to your brain's processing, to being an active driver of your thoughts. That's how I think of it, at least.
chris_mc··on BuzzFeed News Asks Readers to Chip in with Donations
So what you are saying is: you would gladly pay a mandatory fee, thereby gating folks who cannot afford this fee from the content, rather than pay a donation of any amount you wish and still allowing those who can't afford to pay to read the content? In the end, there is zero difference to you in either case, assuming you pay them the same in both, so you're literally gate-keeping news based on ability to pay because you think it's weird that they are for-profit and asking for donations.
chris_mc··on Coffee delivery drone patented by IBM
I mean, there is a f'n drawing of it lowering coffee with a string. That's clearly satire.
chris_mc··on Be kind (2016)
List of things I've done in my first ~9 months at my company:

- Messed up the Software Engineering dept. Jira when I tried to customize my dept. Jira too much. Took hours to fix, during which time Software Engineering dept. couldn't do any ticketing actions.

- `sudo shutdown -h now` on a remote battery control PC because my terminal was still logged into it via SSH from 5 hours previous. I was trying to shutdown my laptop at the end of the day, and don't like the buttons when I have Tilda hotkeyed to 'F1'. Had to send a technician to the site 2 days later at a cost of several hundred bucks, plus the battery was not operational for 2 days during the most operational time we had in recent months, so we lost money there. I've done several more of this sort of thing that has required a tech, too.

- Forecast that a certain day would be the best day to do a specific operational test, but then fucked up inputting the ISO-format date/time string so it started at 7PM on a Saturday rather than 7AM (I know the format pretty well now: `2018-08-24T23:15:00-07:00`).

- Forecast that a certain day would be the best day to do a specific operational test, but fucked up the script, so it mis-calculated everything and the forecast turned out to be worse than useless (lost the company $30k over 4 hours).

Luckily, my company was fine with all this and we learned a ton from it (other people made similar mistakes, too), so it was useful in some way. I am also way more careful and deliberate about anything now, no more "iterative-keyboard-banging" (my original programming style) in Python while connecting directly to the production database!

chris_mc··on Privatizing Poverty
It's not that they have to give information, like name, age, SSN, address, etc., it's that they have to answer very private questions about their lives, like who they are dating, how often they have sex, do they use condoms, do they have medical conditions, etc. It's not right to make someone answer these questions just to survive and help their kids survive, because they have literally zero other options.
chris_mc··on Coffee delivery drone patented by IBM
If I were the CEO of IBM, I'd wonder what jagoff spent 10 grand (average patent cost, with lawyers and other services) to make a coffee drone joke.
chris_mc··on For women on Twitch, appearing single has become a minefield
> For women on real life, appearing single has become a minefield

FTFY, women have had it hard forever when trying to be normal people with normal lives, but some men don't seem to get that they aren't just a sex object to exploit. Whether it's on Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, or on the street, women get hassled day in, day out.

The only way to truly fix it is to get male society, as a whole, to respect women more, which will take a ton of work since I am sure half the comments below mine here will be about how I'm wrong and men are all paragons of moral virtue, explaining how women can be bad people too, or some other logical misdirection/fallacy.

chris_mc··on G Suite Happy Ending
Every month, I drop all of my Google files into my OneDrive using "Google takeout". I don't have to use my own bandwidth, just select all of the data I want (everything), choose to have it sent into my OneDrive, then once it's done (takes a few hours) I delete older backups if I need space (with 1TB of OneDrive space, I can hold about 20 of these Google data backups). That way I ensure I always have an almost-up-to-date backup of all of my Google data that I can use to re-start all of my accounts on another provider, if needed.
chris_mc··on Generating random points inside a sphere
I'm responding to the general lack of concern by the commenter above and most engineers I know. You and this other guy commenting are missing the point, I'm not talking specifically about this algorithm, but about engineers in general who don't care about wasted cycles.
