chris_mahan··on Tesla Model S Ethernet Network Explored
Agreed. There should be a large warning on the console: "Warning to passengers: The Vehicle Systems have been Compromised. Please do not ride in this vehicle. A Service tow truck has been dispatched."

Also, the car should not move.

chris_mahan··on Websites Must Use HSTS in Order to Be Secure
Note that if you take their money and don't ship their product as described, the US Postal Inspection Service will come after you. It protects both sides from fraud.
chris_mahan··on Websites Must Use HSTS in Order to Be Secure
Alternatively, make a plain html website and don't ask users to log in and don't track them with cookies, etc. If you want to collect money from them, make a real product and mail it to them after they sent you a postal money order.

Any attempt to defeat that model will be handled by the US Postal Inspection Service, (see also https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/aboutus/mission.aspx)

chris_mahan··on Why You’re Not Hiring the Best and the Brightest
On the cost of the audition: the programmer who is not employed at the moment may have two, three options to pursue, your company may be one one them. let's say there are two others: One willing to offer full time employment starting tomorrow morning, the second one willing to do 3-month contract-to-hire. The third, you, offer maybe paid audition. Unless your compensation is spectacular, he'll pick you third.

If he has only your offer to entertain, then he's not the best, is he?

Oh, and on the talent scout model: absolutely.

Essentially then it's a contract-to-hire position.
chris_mahan··on Microsoft Will Soon Bring Back The Start Menu In Windows 8.1
That's because they stopped listening to people and started listening to data.

Let that be a warning to all these "data-driven-anything" people.

chris_mahan··on We lost a customer. This is how we found out
And: How much does it cost?
chris_mahan··on Amazon S3 Pricing Changes Effective April 1, 2014
I work at one. I know, sadly.

I think thought that it's a failure of technologists to properly address the challenges of billing.

chris_mahan··on Astronomers Surprised to Find Asteroid With Rings
What do the other asteroids call him, the Lord of the Rings?

Remember, you get what (the reliability, service) you pay for.

And what happens when AWS is no longer a revenue source?

Shareholder (owner)'s decision: cut it.

chris_mahan··on Amazon S3 Pricing Changes Effective April 1, 2014
That is so wrong it's not funny. Call? Isn't our use of computers predicated on the notion that we don't want to do manual labor?
chris_mahan··on Amazon WorkSpaces
I waiting for Plan9 to show up.
chris_mahan··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
What most people fail to realize is that by colluding to repress wages, they essentially robbed the State of California of tax revenues, at a time when school teachers were being asked to do without teacher aides.

I have one word: Prison.

chris_mahan··on Steve Jobs's response after getting a Google employee fired.
So, now you know why I like neither Google not Apple.

If these were foreign countries, we'd have invaded them and set up puppet democracies.

Morons. Like they couldn't figure out the public would find out eventually...

chris_mahan··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
I know. I have normal minecraft on my PC. I like the Android version better. It's too boring to make the items in the crafting table on the PC version.
chris_mahan··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
Oh, they're cashing in right now. Look for them to exit in 6-12 months with millions.
chris_mahan··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
The Android version of Minecraft is very nice. Looking forward to more and better. (My son would love more raising sheep/pugs/cattle game options--he's a rancher at heart)
chris_mahan··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
I think so too. This 3d world environment would completely get rid of computers as we know it, and tablets too, if you could just put on the helmet and go to the internet/facebook, see all your friends, etc...

I am sure the advertizers would love to create 3d models of their products in this environment. Maybe watch some Ford trucks rumble up the mountain while you watch?

chris_mahan··on Microsoft Says: Come Back with a Warrant, Unless You’re Microsoft
Oh, and it's better this way?
chris_mahan··on Microsoft Says: Come Back with a Warrant, Unless You’re Microsoft
Well, because if it wasn't a crime, then they definitely shouldn't have trawling around on his personal hotmail account.
chris_mahan··on Microsoft Says: Come Back with a Warrant, Unless You’re Microsoft
They should have called the FBI, the FBI would have requested a warrant, the Judge would have approved the warrant, and the FBI would have accessed the information in the user's account.

That would have been the correct way to do it.

chris_mahan··on Zuckerberg, Musk Invest in Artificial-Intelligence Company Vicarious
If they could make something with the intelligence of a common bee, they could make awesome drones.
chris_mahan··on Why I Never Hire Brilliant Men (1924)
And what's wrong with that? Would you rather the boss commit a fully tested code? That's your job, not his.
chris_mahan··on Microsoft sniffed blogger's Hotmail account to trace leak
I'm pretty sure the contract with Google would include "Google may not inspect the content of email except to insure proper operation of the system, upon penalty of... blablabla US Postal Code...blahblahblah ...fines ...felony... prison... etc..."
chris_mahan··on Microsoft sniffed blogger's Hotmail account to trace leak
Hotmail is a service offered to the public, and the person was accessing it as such. The hotmail account was his personal email account, not his company-provided email account.

Imagine if Ford motors said: Oh, we can look into the Ford cars that Ford employees have bought with their own money and drive to weekend outings with their families, because we made and service the cars.

I don't think this will fly very far.

chris_mahan··on Microsoft sniffed blogger's Hotmail account to trace leak
I would even pay for that.

Heck they could provide a google-for-domains for the Post Service customers, and still have gmail interface.

With federal protection.

chris_mahan··on Why I Never Hire Brilliant Men (1924)
The old expression "don't bite more than you can chew" epitomizes this. Don't start what you can't finish. It's in deciding what to start and what not to start that you'll make progress.

Read "The Effective Executive" by Peter Drucker, which addresses this in greater detail.

chris_mahan··on Why I Never Hire Brilliant Men (1924)
A lot of Silicon Valley, then.
chris_mahan··on Why I Never Hire Brilliant Men (1924)
I read slang also as linguistics crutches, like saying "cut to the chase" when you really meant to say "please speak plainly", which itself is a nice version of "just tell me the truth".

Linguistics are an interesting thing, especially with geeks. Often, their analytical minds concoct elaborate sentences, which, like algorithms, are abstractions over many little things. I prefer the plain talker, the man who has seen the cathedral of long sentences and has realized only the priests understand him.
