chris_l··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Originally I had Twitter support, but they changed the API around and it ended up not working any more, see the project blog for more info: https://blog.trendbowl.app/

The Pro subscription to the API now seems to be $5000 per month!

chris_l··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
My current project is TrendBowl (https://www.trendbowl.app) which summarises trending entities across multiple sources on the web, including Mastodon and Wikipedia. On a 24 hour basis you can see which terms are relevant in different languages and sites.

It is implemented in Go, Python and JS, with support from Postgres, TimescaleDB and Kubernetes.

chris_l··on Show HN: SHA-256 explained step-by-step visually
Someone should make a collection of the various visualization web projects that crop up here from time to time.
chris_l··on Show HN: Metaheads, a search engine for Facebook comments in the US
More like the bug list!
chris_l··on Ask HN: Looking for a book on algorithms and data structures
Shameless plug: you might want to accompany a book with explained animations of Algorithms and Data Structures: https://www.chrislaux.com
chris_l··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
That's what I meant... hash both versions when logging in.
chris_l··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
So they hash both versions of the password? Or how does this work?
chris_l··on Show HN: Collection of animated algorithms and data structures
Thanks feiss and everyone here for the kind words, they keep me motivated to create more content...
chris_l··on Show HN: Collection of animated algorithms and data structures
I mainly used svg.js which animates SVG as part of an HTML5 document. Other than that the site is static with a lot of custom JS.
chris_l··on TinySeed – A Startup Accelerator Designed for Bootstrappers
Is this going to be world-wide or US-only? The former will probably mean a lot of legal hassle, but it would be nice to be able to participate from elsewhere in the world...
chris_l··on Ambition can be poison
Why don't you weight votes by age of the account? That would make the "old HN" more influential in the current one.
chris_l··on Inside of an atom snapped
So shouldn't the electron density be a sphere? It has this strange ring around outside...
chris_l··on Show HN: a blog search engine
The "best match" ranking does not take time into account, but if you choose "newest first" that is the main criterion.
chris_l··on Show HN: a blog search engine
ok, that results page really is messy. The crawler does actually do language detection, but it isn't perfect. Soto currently only offers search in English actually.
chris_l··on Show HN: a blog search engine
Well to be honest we currently lack distinctive features, we're hoping to learn what users want and add that in the coming weeks...
chris_l··on Show HN: a blog search engine
Thanks for the feedback. To answer some of your questions, soto searches within blogs, using the existence of syndication feeds as the criterion. We are currently still growing the base of blogs so naturally not all are included. I'll make sure to add some documentation.
chris_l··on Brad Feld created a Hacker News-esque site, Startup Revolution
Can't stand that pink for very long :(
chris_l··on Hacking the President’s DNA
Smashing the glass doesn't prevent DNA collection.
chris_l··on EmailOracle (YC W10) Tracks Your Emails and Confirms They've Been Opened
That service working without the recipient changing his settings is by definition a security hole in the email app.
chris_l··on A Visa for Job Creators
Well in some fields every individual worker has their own business pro forma. So these would be harmed disproportionately by cheap immigrant competition. The capital requirement ensures that the new business is in competition with substantial existing companies.
chris_l··on 'The Simpsons' Explains Its Provocative Banksy Opening
He doesn't stoop down to such slogans.

I'd venture it's not commerce but commercialisation he's opposed to.

chris_l··on 'The Simpsons' Explains Its Provocative Banksy Opening
strangely fitting for an artist who normally operates in the grey areas of legality
chris_l··on 'The Simpsons' Explains Its Provocative Banksy Opening
I think the opening is a statement about how the art is taken out of the modern simpsons by the way they are produced. The links in the opening are the asian workers and the sadness in their depiction. This fits with banksys regular theme about the value of art and its opposition to commerce. Subtle enough?
chris_l··on Explain xkcd : It's cause you're dumb
From wikipedia: "Unlike most theorems in geometry, this result depends in a critical way on the axiom of choice". By "taking" the AoC the figure ended up making two pumpkins. Not really funny at all, I'm afraid.
chris_l··on Lets make November "Launch an App Month", who's with me?
I'll launch a blog search engine until Nov 30th.
chris_l··on Caught Spying on Student, FBI Demands GPS Tracker Back
Don't real terrorists receive from rather than send money to such countries?
chris_l··on Xkcd: Online Communities 2
I think/hope he underestimated blogs.
chris_l··on Hipmunk Closes Hyper-Competitive Angel Round, Sans The Usual Suspects
That's what I thought too. But then again, if they had the people to get that interface right, why haven't they done so before? The idea is not so far out, they simply don't compromise of ease and simplicity... like all good products.
chris_l··on Where to See Silicon Valley
This guide comes too late for me! When I visited the area while travelling through cali 8 years ago I couldn't find a hint of SV... but Stanford's campus is great.
chris_l··on Ask HN: How do you decide which idea to start on?
The one I would want to build even if I can't earn anything with it and could only use it myself. Once that one was determined to be commercially viable.
