chris_7··on React Native Navigation Library
I've definitely seen an animation issue where the typical _async -> main didn't work, but _after (0.001 seconds or so) on main did. Though I don't remember if it was on Mac or on iOS, or really what the issue was.
chris_7··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
Target Disk Mode?
chris_7··on Rookie Doctors Will Soon Be Allowed to Work Up to 28 Hours Straight
It could be implemented at the state level here (Republicans would never allow a pro-labor law like that to be passed federally). If New York, California, or Massachusetts passed a law like this, it could be a competitive advantage in attracting top talent in fields that treat their laborers terribly (like medicine, apparently).
chris_7··on Slack is Screwed
Can't wait for it to die off. The typical "all day meeting with the everyone in your company and no agenda" usage is terrible and the software does very little to discourage it holistically.
chris_7··on Rookie Doctors Will Soon Be Allowed to Work Up to 28 Hours Straight
This should just be generally illegal from a labor law perspective, not even something specific to doctors.
chris_7··on Snap Jumps in Debut After App Maker Raises $3.4B in IPO
The popularity of HBO prestige dramas would contradict that... plenty of people watch hour long shows.
chris_7··on How Ikea's Billy bookcase took over the world
The designs from Crate and Barrel usually aren't as good as those Ikea, even if the quality is up to snuff. CB2 is usually okay, as long as they haven't decided to make the piece you want only available in bright orange or something. They do that sometimes.

There is definitely a gulf between Ikea (bad quality, good design, $) and DWR-tier places (good quality, good design, $$$$). Muji maybe, if they happen to make something in the niche you're looking for.

chris_7··on It's taboo to plug your startup or idea. Why?
It's taboo because no one cares about your startup and trying to sell things to people is annoying.
chris_7··on Ask HN: Is there anything you like about recruiters?
First party recruiters are fine, if incompetent in technical matters.

Third party recruiters are usually scummy salesmen types.

chris_7··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use, and why?
1Password, it's usable and up to typical AppKit standards. LastPass is... awkward.
chris_7··on Ask HN: Learn Python, R? Or something else?
I mean, there's about 10 slightly-different versions of `map` (whither `zip`, though?). There's several different mutually-incompatible object systems. It doesn't come with a proper dictionary or set. Multidimensional arrays (well, lists) are treated specially for some reason instead of just being a property that arises from the concept of an indexed container. It's definitely a weird language.
chris_7··on Ask HN: Working at a startup vs. working at an established company?
Working at a big company = more pay, better benefits, no "unlimited vacation" nonsense, better hours, stock that isn't Monopoly money and that you don't have to pay for, and often a better environment (much less likely to have "office music", distracting dogs, people making noise, "totally not mandatory" alcohol events, etc.).
chris_7··on Cloudflare Reverse Proxies Are Dumping Uninitialized Memory
I am confused - why is 1Password is using anything but iCloud or Dropbox? Those are the only options I see (and "Folder" which is presumably just local).
chris_7··on Problems with Android Studio
Yeah, uh, does the syntax highlighter crash every minute in Android Studio? Does the Java compiler regularly segfault? Beating Xcode is not difficult.
chris_7··on Browsing your website does not mean I want your spam (2016)
Absolutely not. I flag those as spam.

Unless it's an email notification from the service because of an action someone took... those are okay but I'd prefer them to be off-by-default.

chris_7··on Browsing your website does not mean I want your spam (2016)
Why is the company's inability to get users my problem? Those emails get flagged and placed in spam, where they belong? Spam is never "understandable". Get an (explicit, non-dark-pattern) opt in or you're spam.
chris_7··on Apple Park Opens to Employees in April
I'd like nothing more than a wired Magic Trackpad. Batteries suck.
chris_7··on Ask HN: What is a problem you face at work?
Slack.
chris_7··on Apple Worldwide Dev Conference 2017 announced
San Jose definitely decreases the appeal for me as someone that would have to fly in, pay for a hotel, etc. (would be good to also get a trip to a first-class metropolitan city) but I suppose they're not exactly short on demand... and the SF one didn't really appeal to me either given the cost (could go to Europe for vacation instead...).
chris_7··on Can I Talk to that William Fellow? He was so Helpful (2009)
Depends how frequently you need documentation, and I do iOS so I'm typically running a large iPhone Simulator instance on screen as well.
chris_7··on Realtime Analysis of the Oroville Dam Disaster
Is welding giant metal sheets over the hole an option?
chris_7··on Can I Talk to that William Fellow? He was so Helpful (2009)
No giant monitors though? Typically I have the choice of "quiet side room" or "giant monitor at desk".
chris_7··on Realtime Analysis of the Oroville Dam Disaster
What ever happened to the Mosul dam? Stories from about a year ago made it sound like collapse was imminent, but it hasn't happened yet. Did they do repairs, or are they just unsure when it will happen?
chris_7··on Can I Talk to that William Fellow? He was so Helpful (2009)
Perhaps, but you'll also have the huge negative of your developers being unable to focus.
chris_7··on List of falsehoods programmers believe in
> There exists an algorithm which transforms names and can be reversed losslessly. (Yes, yes, you can do it if your algorithm returns the input. You get a gold star.)

What am I missing here? Any lossless compression algorithm works, even "string.reverse" would apply.

chris_7··on No link between eating dinner after 8pm, obesity in children
Eat fewer calories than you expend. Most of your expenditure is BMR + walking around, exercise doesn't add that much (unless you're at Olympic-swimmer levels).
chris_7··on Ask HN: Are there 'dumb' ways to make money as a developer in your spare time?
> pregame before going out

Or just don't drink alcohol, it's is stupid expensive for something you're just going to pee out. Plus, it's empty calories.

Tea is cheap and good, milk is cheap and good for you, (tap) water is basically free.

chris_7··on Ask HN: What do you expect or hate to see in a job offer decription?
Pros:

$ listed up front

Actual details on health insurance.

Cons:

Anything about dogs, beer, snacks, ping pong, or company outings on weekends or after hours.

The word "startup".

chris_7··on “We have decided to disable IMDb's message boards”
Does this not run afoul of IP laws?
chris_7··on Ask HN: Why don't developers unionize?
Tom Brady is in a union... Leonardo DiCaprio is in a union...
