chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: Your admittedly useless side projects?
only a tiny UI demo https://v2.demo.croply.de/HajV/ - clicking a hex normally loads a historical graph but this has been untouched for >10 Mo
chrisMyzel··on YaLM-100B: Pretrained language model with 100B parameters
With DeepSpeed an SSD and lots of RAM you should be able to run inference with a 8GB card. There’s a thread somewhere on https://discuss.huggingface.co/ doing the math around this
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: Your admittedly useless side projects?
A service like google maps that shows all farm ground (fields, meadows) as colored hexagons representing the crop health (NDWI), updated daily/weekly. Resolution is roughly 50sqm per hex, test case was all Germany.

Was ultra hard getting it into farmers hands but ultra fun to code. Based on satellite data

chrisMyzel··on The Organization of Your Bookshelves Tells Its Own Story
After having moved countless times within the same city I moved all my books to digital and will never look back.
chrisMyzel··on Fair Game: data scraping is an underacknowledged privacy concern
I believe OP does not realize how machines talking to machines (in this case: reading from machines) is a central part of our future. It's not only malic. actors as mostly put in the article. We missed making the internet structured so reading the web with machines in the way we will go about it. It's unavoidable and will lead to good outcomes. For sure it's annoying for site owners seeing bots go crazy (3k req/m) but does it matter if a machine picks up my random thought I should have not posted to the internet in the first place or a person?
chrisMyzel··on International Institute of Not Doing Much
the DB just decided for HN to slow down itself
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: How to make a photogenic server room
Do you have any pictures of such an installation?
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: How to make a photogenic server room
I love Linus' (tech tips) neon-pink rack!
chrisMyzel··on Review of Internet for the People: The Fight for Our Digital Future
I had exactly the same thought when coming to the site!
chrisMyzel··on CityEngine: Build a Digital Twin of Your City
I like the idea but wonder why they have chose such a blurry basemap, it makes it look very very awful, like an early 2000s product.
chrisMyzel··on Show HN: Growth Hacking Kit
Growth hacking is something personal to product, i wouldnt consider posting content a growth hack. Understanding the motivations of your users, where they hang out online, automating learning about them, I'd consider these growth hacking but miss the impression on these topics when looking at the landing page from OP.
chrisMyzel··on Show HN: Analyzing top HN posts with language models
sorry for the OT post, wanted to cheer for ploomber - love it for writing pipelines, didnt know your EU based (guessing by ur username?).
chrisMyzel··on Electronic Catan LCD Tiles
Would love to see a video about it, no matter the quality.
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: I found a pretty extreme data leak and I'm not sure what to do
I think they would not care much for 1), 2) sounds good but might lead to yourself getting into legal trouble 3) sounds reasonable :)))

Is this of personal concern to you? I understand our position and responsibility in handling data and data incidents but it might be worth handing it to someone else. In Germany a goto address would be Chaos Computer Club, I believe they are happy to do responsible handling of something like this, but it might be of a non-concern to them if it's totally not connected to Germany. You might be able to find another org or approach a journalist for help.

chrisMyzel··on Using a game engine to write a GUI to the OpenBSD package manager
Interesting discussion. Trying to get to render high performance graphs in the browser and it’s a chore to find good libraries.

Found this article about advanced GUIs with godot https://medium.com/swlh/what-makes-godot-engine-great-for-ad...

chrisMyzel··on OPT: Open Pre-trained Transformer Language Models
Does anyone else think closed AI is turning into it's most weirdest forms and becoming a trend?
chrisMyzel··on I Am Satoshi
look at all the post revskill has made…same scheme on other posts
chrisMyzel··on LetsEncrypt Certificate Issuance Halted
Anybody who's affected by this clearly is too late in renewing =)
chrisMyzel··on Show HN: Open-Source Auth for NextJS / React
Ory developers emailed me and offered support after I had just expressed interest into the project with someone they know personally - that's a great experience and I have loved watching and using the project since then!
chrisMyzel··on Scamspotter.org – Google and Cybercrime Support Network Partnership
why is this getting downvoted?
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: Why does cryptocurrency subjects on HN lack curious conversations?
The technology behind crypto is interesting, the hype (and gambling) is not
chrisMyzel··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
> To make a JS progress bar correctly show precent of data loaded over a network you would need to first know the total data size.

correct but what's the problem with determining it server-side

chrisMyzel··on Scamspotter.org – Google and Cybercrime Support Network Partnership
The much I dislike the G company they do a good job of highlighting how to make spotting a scam easy…it feels like first order principles to me…though it's a problem for many not so "internet natives".
chrisMyzel··on Kioxia EM6 25GbE NVMe-Of SSD Launched
NVME-oF looks pretty convenient to use, you need two commands (guess since this is directly attached to a switch here only one client side command) to have a remote SSD show up in linux..it doesnt show up as a mounted drive but a /dev/ device…pretty neat.
chrisMyzel··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
Youtube & Netflix do this the same way…actually a lot of JS/TS frontend frameworks nowadays have this 1px loading bar at the top which behaves the same way (speedup, slow down never reach 100%)
chrisMyzel··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
How would a programmable search engine look like to you? Would providing what you look for with a) a search query b) tagging what you are looking for on screen on 3 results and c) getting results at scale sent to

you be a programmable search engine? (then --> [1])

chrisMyzel··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
You'll be able to get 100s of recipes sorted by whatever you like to sort them after signing up for the waitlist at our website (and wait a little :))…without clicking through websites that is.
chrisMyzel··on Show HN: You.com, private search engine that summarizes the web – built for devs
Hi Richard, lucky coincidence - we're launching something similar in that regard today [1][2], in general we say "meeh" to search engines (you did not hear me saying that) but I love to keep watching your project from today on.

We're launching Sentinel, an A.I.based data aggregation tool that does the searching for you and brings you back just results (instead of websites). You could call it a "semantic web enabler with a large language model instead of xml" at it's core – but it's too hard to digest for all people off HN.

Chris

chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: Connect to the Internet the old way during next Ethiopian lockdown?
with starlink you need to place the dish (size of a large pizza) towards the clear sky…from an helicopter this is very much visible. I think this he refers to. Given they are focused on searching for these. Long Range WiFi can be much more stealth to setup.
chrisMyzel··on Ask HN: Connect to the Internet the old way during next Ethiopian lockdown?
Twillio offers API level text message sending. You'd use a twitter API -> twillio -> sms bridge to have twitter available…
