chris11··on Nvidia won, we all lost
I think it's both contact and wire resistance.

It is technically possible to solder a new connector on. LTT did that in a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzwrLLg1RR4

chris11··on Ex-Finance developers mock McKinsey's monitoring metrics
The newsletter is much better than the posted article. It's a detailed critique and discusses alternatives. Efinancialcareers posts a lot of low effort blog posts.
chris11··on Toyota has been developing a solid-state battery for EVs with a range of 745mi
You can custom order electric versions of random gas vehicles. Toyota can make an EV. https://www.zelectricmotors.com/tesla-porsche https://www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/
chris11··on Hollywood is on strike because CEOs fell for Silicon Valley’s magical thinking
It's not just extras. Jet Li turned down The Matrix Reloaded because they were requiring that he also sell the rights to the martial arts moves used.
chris11··on A Senior Engineer’s Guide to FAANG Interviews
> Nowadays, it's obvious to me that it's my responsibility to make it easy for them to see that I am good. That's what practice is - it's you working on your ability to articulate your fit for the role

I second that. As an interviewer it's much easier to pass someone if they directly articulate how they meet the question rubrik. For coding interviews that can mean explicitly communicating a methodical approach and covering edge cases. For behavioral that can mean clearly communicating a situation and it's impact. This does take practice.

chris11··on $900k Median Package for Engineers at OpenAI
I don't think that's a fair example. I'm not sure what it's like to run a small business in California. But the answer to that situation is progressive taxation, and California has one of the most progressive tax systems in the US. https://taxfoundation.org/which-states-have-most-progressive...
chris11··on $900k Median Package for Engineers at OpenAI
Is Netflix really that bad? They aggressively state they quickly fire people. But I've also seen reports that their turnover rate is low, and they don't have a PIP culture. It looks to me like people are reasonably happy there for the most part.
chris11··on Quality of new vehicles in US declining on more tech use: study
Personally I'd really like to use that screen with google maps.
chris11··on SEC to Weigh New Artificial-Intelligence Rules for Brokerages
I'm not familiar with the rules. But if you train AI on customer data you might end up with something that looks like front-running.
chris11··on Dell in hot water for making shoppers think overpriced monitors were discounted
Manufacturers and retailers will also change models for sales. Black Friday sales are sometimes cheaper, lower quality versions. Discount clothing retailers sometimes get items made specifically for them. And that's ignoring bad QA. Patagonia just filed a lawsuit against Nordstrom Rack for selling counterfeit clothing.
chris11··on Lenovo profits sink 75% as PC demand continues nosedive
And telling IT to support a new operating system company wide could be an expensive decision.
chris11··on Investors brace for a painful crash into America’s debt-ceiling
Republicans are following the Two Santas strategy. The democratic Santa is increased social spending. The Republican Santa is cutting taxes during their administration. The debt ceiling is used to force the next administration to pay for them, either by raising taxes or cutting spending.

chris11··on Tech jobs remain a good bet despite mass layoffs in Silicon Valley
I'm at a FAANG adjacent company and we do hire older ICs. Though I wouldn't want to be interviewing right now. Senior level interviews can be demanding, and junior positions hard to find.

It's crappy answer to age discrimination, but people pivoting can leave less relevant experience off of resumes. I've done that.

chris11··on Former Meta staffer reveals she had to ‘fight for work’
It could make sense. I'm assuming they will be doing actual work during that time. A paid 12 month long apprenticeship would be good for both parties. It's enough time for Meta to decide if they want to hire an employee full time, and a year would give sourcers a decent amount of experience if they wanted to leave.
chris11··on LastPass says employee’s home computer was hacked and corporate vault taken
Access control isn't great if an engineer was able to transfer vaults to a personal plex server.
chris11··on CMU CS Academy: a free online computer science curriculum by Carnegie Mellon
Top tech companies could reduce comp by lowering hiring bars and wages. They don't think it's worth the cost.
chris11··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
Twitter is private, but Elon definitely destroyed value when he took it over.
chris11··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Trust and Safety is an extraordinarily difficult problem to handle at scale. Ideally guidelines should be public and applied consistently. That's a high standard.

Elon came in saying he was pro free speech, even saying ElonJet wouldn't be banned. But he fired moderation teams and replaced them by personally making individual decisions. Twitter can't get consistent application of public guidelines from that.

chris11··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
Information being false or libelous is another reason to ban someone. That makes it more hypocritical that LibsOfTikTok was unbanned but ElonJet was banned.
chris11··on Tesla FSD data is getting worse, according to beta tester self-reports
FSD marketing has always seemed sketchy to me. Though I like Open Pilot. It's a much smaller scope for an L2 system to keep you in your lane and keep you a safe distance from the next car. It works well for highway driving.
chris11··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
She started in June, she then quit shortly after Elon took over, then she was convinced to come back.
chris11··on Twitter appears to be flagging tweets mentioning Mastodon as sensitive
Yes, Elon's takeover of Twitter is a hot culture war topic. Sites would run that story.
chris11··on Twitter appears to be flagging tweets mentioning Mastodon as sensitive
It was also at a Chappelle show. His Netflix special was controversial. I'd expect the audience would be more supportive of Elon than the general public.
chris11··on HN Who is hiring job posts over time
The scale of hiring at FAANG companies is on another level. Google's summer intern class is probably much larger than the number of FTEs at my current job. They need to contact tens or hundreds of thousands of prospective candidates. I'm not shocked some people have an easier time getting interviews from FAANG companies.
chris11··on Tell HN: Employers are not desperate to hire developers
I'd say it depends on the company. Silicon Valley likes to promote on impact. So being able to communicate that impact is a valuable skill.
chris11··on FTX collapse, Tether operations have links to online-poker cheating scandals
> Isn’t that why Joe Rogan is more popular than CNN?

How is Rogan an an example of good journalism? He doesn't do background research or push back on guests.

chris11··on Twitter faces a class action lawsuit over mass employee layoffs with proper
Federal and California WARN acts require advance notification for mass layoffs. It's still "at will", but more regulations come into play if a lot of people lose their jobs.
chris11··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
Layoffs can be more expensive than terminating for cause. https://www.reuters.com/business/tesla-sued-by-former-employ...
chris11··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
How are they getting promoted? I hate the idea of cheating. Interviewing is unpleasant on both sides, and I don't want to compete with cheaters. But getting promoted isn't easy. It's been common advice to get a promo at another company if you are having trouble at your current job. Sure promos can be political and involve luck, but hopefully they are backed up by real impact.
chris11··on More than half of Silicon Valley residents want to leave: The mood is darkening
That wealth explosion is a major factor. Oil boomtowns are also notoriously bad places to live. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jun/06/boomtown-oil...
